PASTOR’S CORNER

Pentecost Happy birthday to the Catholic Church! Pentecost is Church's birthday, and ours as well, because we are part of the body of Christ, the Church. ‘Pentecostes’, (πεντηκοστή, ῆς, ἡ - pentékosté) in Greek means fiftieth. The feast of Pentecost was one of the major festivals of Jews along with the festivals of ‘Tabernacle’ and ‘Passover’. It was a festival of thanksgiving on the 50th day after the Passover. Originally it was a celebration of thanksgiving to God after a good harvest; later the elements of Yahweh’s covenant with Noah after 50 days of deluge and still later the 50th day of Yahweh’s Sinaitic covenant with Moses were added to it. It was on this day when the apostles had gathered in a room, a great wind blew and a flame appeared as a tongue of fire, which split itself into many individual flames above the heads of all those present (Acts 2:1-4). The symbols of Pentecost are flame, wind, and the dove which represent the Holy Spirit. The color of Pentecost is red. Pentecost is a profound religious experience that gave rise to a new Israel, new people of God and founding of the church. Here the new religious experience breaks the boundaries of the then, “God’s chosen people” and now extends His saving grace to everyone, everywhere and in every age and the agent of that saving grace is Holy Spirit. The Pentecost has happened in each of us and we who are Christians bear the Holy Spirit within us and the Spirit is at work in us to bear the fruits of love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control.
