In keeping with our last issue, we are focusing on the lives of men and women who have showed great courage and hope in the midst of great obstacles. 1 Corinthians 16:13 tells us “Be on your guard; stand firm in the faith; be men of courage; be strong. Do every-thing in love.” Coming from a street life where the environment is riddled with drug and alcohol addictions along with abuses that range from physical and sexual to emotional, it takes a great amount of courage for men to stand and face their greatest fears. It takes courage to get sober, to stop taking drugs and be a man. At Hope For The Future’s Church Without Walls our goal is to impart godly values, teaching men who they are in Christ, in-stilling the knowledge that God equips them with courage and faith to deal with their dark-

est challenges. Here are some of their stories…

It was an addiction that had him bound for 37 years. His life was falling apart, in shambles. He and his wife, Karen, were really struggling in their marriage. Pastor Di-ane never gave up on him, ministering to him that the love of Christ is stronger than any addiction. He was arrested 4 times for DWI’s and still he continued to drink while out on bail, with a hearing pending! No matter the warning… he could not stop. And so the inevi-table happened while upstate… he was stopped by the police without having a license, registration, or insurance and was arrested yet again . This time he was facing up to 2 1/2 to 4 years in State prison. At this time his wife, and Pastor Diane continued to pray for him.

The Lord answered prayer for Matthew. He was in jail a month and before sentencing they released him early. To this day he does not know why! The court told him they were giving

Eugene Lemon: Eugene Lemon: Eugene Lemon: Eugene Lemon: ►►►► I have known Pastor Diane since 1995. When I met her, over on 9th and C, I was very down and out.

Struggling with a crack addiction I needed help. Coming to HFTF really began to help me. I started giving a hand, after a while, whenever I could. Though I have drifted away and haven’t been around in a while, I never forgot what a blessing Hope For

The Future was to me in my greatest time

of need.

Recently, while passing by the park

(Tompkins Square Park), I heard Pastor Di-ane, preaching a message. She was talking about celebrities who have come and gone, such as Michael Jackson. He attained great honor in the music industry being named King of Pop. She continued on and said

something like, “but I know a king who is above every king, honored with the name, King of Kings and Lord of Lords”. I have been back since and the sermons have been awesome and just what I have needed to hear. I have also found the music to be an interesting addition. I am so grateful to Pas-

tor Diane and Hope For The Future. They have been a constant in this neighborhood for so many years. The food they give is not served alone. It comes with a healthy portion of hope! And I am one who is grateful for

that! (By God’s grace Eugene is drug free!)

Angelo Tabone: Angelo Tabone: Angelo Tabone: Angelo Tabone:

Angelo, is a 78 year old senior, and is one of our ‘regulars’ on 7th and A. He has been

coming to HFTF’s Church Without Walls for about 2 years now. Angelo is an im-migrant from Malta. In bro-ken English he described how difficult life was back in his homeland. But, a broken-

ness of another kind began to emerge as he spoke of having to fight in WWII. A man of few words, he uttered softly, ‘I’m lucky to be alive.’ Some time after, he made

his way to the U.S. trying to start a new life. He has found great solace in the HFTF’s church services. He never misses a Wednesday service. He expressed great gratitude for the food he

receives each week.

Francois Tornne:Francois Tornne:Francois Tornne:Francois Tornne:►►►► Francois is originally from Haiti as one can tell by his thick French

accent. Years ago he came with his family searching for a better life. Francois is a sim-ple, hard-working man. One of his greatest joys is helping at HFTF. On any given

Wednesday or Saturday he can be found standing at the curb waiting patiently for the vans to arrive. Francois holds parking spaces for our vehicles, which is no easy task on the streets of NY. But, he does it faithfully, not only for Pastor Diane and HFTF, but as he says… ‘for God.’ “I love God so much!” And when it comes to his feelings about

Hope For the Future? “I love it, I just love it,” raising his hands up to heaven, as he knelt down to thank God (in the cold rain). He said he appreciates all that the ministry has provided for him and his fami-ly and he will always be there to help, no matter

what.

EmilEmilEmilEmil:► Emil came to the ministry 20 years ago, when he was tired, hungry, and in need. He was so blessed with the amount and quality of the food he had been given, he kept coming. Four years later his life was on a downhill slide, when he realized that

he needed to make a change. He started helping and coming to services. Today his heart and life belong to Christ! He is a nursing assistant by trade, but he can be found at HFTF’s services and outreaches, whether it is to help unload trucks, deal with folks on line, or receive from the sermons preached, the courage he needs to help raise his children or get through every day trials. His life has been drastically turned around

and he is so appreciative to HFTF for the positive influence it has made on his life.

Jesus Fernandez: Jesus Fernandez: Jesus Fernandez: Jesus Fernandez: Jesus has lived in the US for the past

25 years. Arriving here from the Do-minican Republic, he went searching for work. Being a stranger to this land

and not knowing the language, Jesus

hoped against hope that he would be able to find a decent job. Through perseverance he found a job, which he would work at for the next 17 years. With a refreshing humility, he tells us he considers himself very blessed. Now that he

is a senior citizen and on a fixed income, the items he receives help him greatly. He says , “for the last 9 years, HFTF has been a big help... with food, clothes and things for my house that I can’t buy for myself. Gracias Pastora Diana! Gracias!” Jesus never misses a service. He is

always right there waiting for the Word of the

Lord to come and meet him.
