From the Rectory JAMES MUSTARD, PARISH PRIEST

Sunday-by-Sunday, the church

also Remembers. As we take,

bless, break and share the bread

and wine of Holy Communion, we

remember all that God has done

for us in Jesus. In worship, we

use a Greek term, ἀνάμνησις

(a n a mn e s i s ) t o d e s c r i b e

this. Anamnesis is distinct from

other forms of ‗remembrance‘,

because it is not simply an act of

‗looking back‘ and remaining de-

t a c h e d f r o m wh a t ' s r e -

called. Instead, anamnesis implies

becoming an active part of re-

membrance, of bringing the events

of Jesus‘ dying and rising again

right into the present and being

changed by them: we ‗re-

member‘, re-constitute and re-

align ourselves according to the

death and resurrection of Jesus.

I f w e b r i n g a s p i r i t

of anamnesis into all our remem-

bering this month, we will open

ourselves to the possibility of be-

ing changed, of being re-

membered, by our remem-

brance. It is entirely appropriate

that we should recall those who

have gone before us, even those

closest to us, and allow ourselves

to be changed by them. Just be-

cause saints‘ lives may be distant

from us, soldiers‘ names may be

recalled only on memorials and

our deceased friends and relatives

are no longer with us, they all still

have the capacity to change us, to

re-member us, and encourage us

to make the world a better place.

In Flanders’ Fields

In Flanders’ fields the poppies blow Between the crosses, row on row,

That mark our place: and in the sky The larks, still bravely singing, fly

Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the dead. Short days ago We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow, Loved and were loved, and now we lie

In Flanders’ fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe; To you from failing hands we throw The torch; be yours to hold it high,

If ye break faith with us who die We shall not sleep, though poppies grow

In Flanders’ fields.

East Barnet RBL parade and service

THE Royal British Legion’s annual

Remembrance parade and service will

take place on Sunday November 10. The parade will leave the Legion HQ in

Brookhill Road at 10.30am and march to

the East Barnet War Memorial for a

short service, playing of the Last Post

and the two minutes silence at 11am. A

service will then be held in Brookside

Methodist Church.

Refreshments will be available in the

Legion after the parade and service.

Flower of memories SPRING 1915 was the first time

that warm weather began to

warm up the countryside after

the cold winter in 1914-1915.

In Flanders, April and May 1915

were unusually warm. Farmers

were ploughing their fields close up to the

front lines and new life was starting to

grow. One of the plants that began to grow

in clusters on and around the battle zones

was the red field or corn poppy.

This was the sight that greeted surgeon Lt

Col John McRae as he emerged from a

dugout after a night spent operating on

wounded soldiers and wrote the poem

(right) which made famous the blood-red

flower that has become the symbol of the

Remembrance we observe each year.

Keeping children,

young people and

vulnerable adults

safe from all

forms of abuse

WE HAVE a safeguarding pol-

icy agreed by the parish council

and Brookside Methodist

Church council. Anyone is wel-

come to read the policy in its

entirety, but here are some

things from it that everyone

should know:

First and most importantly, it is

up to EVERYONE to prevent

abuse from happening.

We all need to bear in mind that,

sadly, anyone could come through

our doors, form a relationship

with a child or vulnerable person

and exploit them for their own

reasons.

Parents and carers need to be con-

stantly aware of where their child

is and to whom they are talking,

for example, after a service or at a

social event.

In our children‘s activities, we

don‘t leave an adult alone with a

child. All paid and voluntary

workers register with us and agree

to abide by the safeguarding pol-

icy. All applicants have to apply

for clearance using the disclosure

and barring service, and these are

renewed every five years. We

also keep a register of children at

each activity.

We publish photographs or videos

of children only with parental

consent and with as few identify-

ing details as possible, and any-

one with a key to church premises

has to sign a declaration that they

understand, and will comply with,

our safeguarding policy.

If we suspect abuse has happened,

the Rector (or Methodist Minis-

ter) and the safeguarding officer

(Margaret Cranfield for St

Mary‘s, Shirley-Anne Wheeler

for the Methodists) are informed

and decide whether to refer this to

social services or the police. If

the allegation concerns the Rector

or Minister, the safeguarding offi-

cers report it to church authorities

as well.

If a child discloses that abuse has

taken place (whether on church

premises or elsewhere) we tell the

police and/or social services im-

mediately, using 999 if the child

needs immediate protection or

medical help.

The safeguarding policy is a bit

like an umbrella. If you don‘t

have one, it is a disaster if you

need one. If you do have one,

chances are you won‘t need it!

So let‘s continue to pray for eve-

ryone who works with our chil-

dren, young people and vulner-

able adults. Margaret Cranfield

AT 11AM on Remembrance

Sunday, November 10, East

Barnet Village will become

silent for two minutes. During the silence, those present

might think of all sorts of things,

two of which might be, Where was

God? Where is God? I‘d like to

quote to you from a meditation

called ―God‘s Two Silences,‖ which

is an excerpt from Fr. John Main‘s

book The Way of Unknowing.

We live in a very un-silent world.

We live in a world that is so full of

bombarding foreground and back-

ground noise that we hear every-

thing at once, and listen to nothing.

And yet each one of us is called into

the state of prayer, of pure attention,

of expansion of spirit, in the eternal

silence of God.

But a second sort of silence, when

God seems to have withdrawn his

presence, is also a reality. It is one

where we are left with no sense of

his being but only with the sense of

his wholesale withdrawal from our

world, from our consciousness. It is

true that it is wonderful when we do

have the sense of God‘s infinity fill-

ing us with an infinite calm, a pro-

found sense of wonder.

This is a wonderful gift but it is not

one that we must seek to possess.

We can be equally content with ei-

ther of these forms of silence, with

the infinite sense of his presence, as

with the finite sense of his absence.

It is harder for us at the beginning

because we haven‘t reached the

stage where we can be equally con-

tent with absence as with presence.

We are always looking to prove that

now we know God; now we have

learned to live in his presence.

But the purpose of the second form

of silence, his absence, is to purify

us, so that we learn to love God

selflessly, just as he loves us. He

teaches us to be strong in love,

strong in fidelity and to ensure that

we love God for himself, and in

himself, and not only for any mani-

festation of his presence that satis-

fies us.

To mature at any level we have to

grow through all the difficulties pro-

duced by change or loss, all the feel-

ings, emotions and thoughts so gen-

erated and learn to love God simply

and strongly. God is Love, and his

love dwells in our hearts.

Familiar If we are committed to the journey,

then the sense of absence will in-

deed deepen and strengthen our

conviction of God‘s existence, mak-

ing him more familiar, teaching us

to know him more fully.

At this depth of faith we are indif-

ferent as to whether we have a sense

of his close presence or a sense of

his absence, because our conviction

is founded not on feeling but on

fact: the fact that he is the all-

merciful, the all-loving, and all-

compassionate God. The two si-

lences are both of them equally

powerful in teaching us.

The silence of revelations fills us

with wonder and the silence of

absence teaches us fidelity. The

Word is present in both.

LED BY EXPERIENCED COACHES...

What are they?

Credit unions are small non-profit

financial organisations set up by

members with something in com-

mon to benefit their community.

That common factor may be living

in the same town, working in the

same industry or belonging to a

particular trade union.

Members pool their savings to

lend to one another and help to run

the credit union, and there‘s no

profit for shareholders so all the

cash stays locally.

What are

they for?

Their aim is to encourage people

to save what they can, and borrow

only what they can afford to re-

pay. They can be a welcome alter-

native to payday loans but they

may also appeal to those who

want to bank ethically and benefit

their community.

Credit unions are very good for

loans of smaller amounts (£50 to

£3,000). Loans come with a maxi-

mum interest rate of 26.8% apr.

Better rates are possible if you've

a good credit rating but compared

to the typical 58.53% apr from one

well known payday lender, it's a

very good price!

They also all offer some form of

savings account. The interest rate

is usually around 2% but depends

on the individual union. All sav-

ings have exactly the same protec-

tion as normal savings

accounts (the financial

services compensation

scheme will pay back

£85,000 per person, per institution

in the unlikely event anything

goes wrong).

Where are they?

There are roughly 500 unions

across the UK, and we're lucky

enough to have two available to us

in Barnet. They are not based in

the borough but cover all East

Barnet and Brunswick Park resi-

dents. Get in touch. They would

be happy to hear from you.

looks at the

benefits of

credit unions

Paying the price

of a payday loan THERE has been a lot in the papers recently about

the perils of payday loans. Credit unions are often

mentioned as an alternative for people needing to

borrow small amounts of cash but not many people

know what credit unions are, what they are for and

how to find their nearest.

8—Church Hill Herald November 2013

In comparison, nobody ever whis-

tles after me in good old England.

The only compliments coming my

way are from the homeless guys

hanging around the block (―Nice

lipstick, sweetheart‖), or Herald

editor Mike, who likes to call me

Bellissima.

Although Chris, the best husband in

the world, also pays me compli-

ments, they never quite reach the

realms of those of Italian waiters. In

fact, they sound quite wooden. For

instance when I return home from

the hairdresser, all glossy hair and

not a grey root in sight, and ask

―How do I look?‖ he usually comes

up with something like ―Your hair

colour perfectly matches the dining

table.‖ What kind of compliment is

that?

One day, when it was really hot in

Rome, I wanted to visit a crypt in

my sleeveless pink summer dress.

―It‘s quite cool in the crypt,‖ the

guy at the entrance said and handed

me a pashmina. ―The shawl will

keep you warm.‖

In truth, of course, he‘d given me

the pashmina because in Italy

women need to cover their arms if

they want to enter a church. How

nice to phrase it in such a way that I

didn‘t feel embarrassed about my

mistake. I bet in England I‘d have

heard something completely differ-

ent from the doorman.

Elaborate My borrowed pashmina wrapped

around my shoulders, I went into

that crypt and couldn‘t quite believe

what I was seeing. The bones of

about 3,400 Capuchin monks had

been used to decorate it in elaborate

detail. Every tiny part in there was

made of bones, down to the chande-

liers. It was quite unbelievable.

Although I knew what to expect, I

didn‘t quite realise it at first. What

looked very much like the usual

stucco turned out to be shoulder

blades at close sight, or knee joints.

Capuchin monks are friars of the

Order of St Francis. They are the

ones wearing a brown cloak with a

hood, and they are often depicted on

paintings wearing a tonsure and

holding a glass of wine.

Richard, our previous rector, also

belongs to the Order of St Francis,

if I remember correctly. I‘ve never

come across a painting of a friar

like him, in Doc Martens boots and

with an earring. But you can‘t really

know what lies beyond those shoul-

der blades, skulls, and knee joints in

that crypt. There are so many bones

there, and each of them belonged to

a monk with a personality of his

own. With earring, without… who

knows? They were not properly

buried, and their remains are all

intermingled. Still, this is a holy

place, and I was glad to be wearing

my pashmina in honour of the dead.

Afterwards I went to see Santa

Maria del Popolo, a beautiful

church in the famous Piazza del

Popolo. There are many private

chapels within that church, each

belonging to a rich and famous Ital-

ian family, and I wanted to see the

two Caravaggio paintings in one of

them.

James . . ? Of course, I had a look at the other

private chapels as well, and in one I

stumbled over a beautiful painting

of Agostino Masucci. ‗St Augustin

presents St Nicholas to the Virgin‘

it was called, and St Nicholas was

the spitting image of James Mus-

tard, our rector.

Too bad the gift shop didn‘t sell a

postcard with this picture. Still, if

you ever go to Rome, don‘t forget

to visit Santa Maria del Popolo. It‘s

When in Rome. . . lap

up the compliments! RECENTLY I spent two weeks in Rome, the eternal city, to learn some

Italian. Quite frankly, I did not want to return home. The sunshine and

the food were just to die for, and nothing beats the charm of Italian men.

One smiled and gave me a rose, just like that, and every Italian waiter I met

started flirting. It doesn‘t get much better than that.

OUR RECTOR James recently

gave a very interesting talk about

angels.

There were many different kinds of

angels in the Bible, he explained, all

having their own ranking and social

standing in celestial society – basi-

cally a reflection of how a king on

earth would be surrounded, adored

and protected by his court.

This reminded me a lot of Elliott

Templeton, a character in The Ra-

zor‘s Edge by Somerset Maugham.

Even on his deathbed his outlook on

death was somewhat positive: ―I have

always moved in the best society in

Europe, and I have no doubt that I

shall move in the best society in

heaven.‖

The word angel means ‗messenger‘,

James explained. Angels are messen-

gers of God and you don‘t need to be

dead or grow wings to join their

ranks. Each time we spread the word

of God, or do a good deed as Christ

has taught us, we are one of God‘s

angels.

Many years ago I was in the Whit-

tington Hospital, pregnant, and most

likely to lose my child. The baby was

due to be born on December 31, so I

had wanted to name him Sylvester

(the saint of New Year‘s Eve). I was

very upset about the whole thing,

because I was alone, and the doctors

suddenly announced that they had to

terminate the pregnancy there and

then, otherwise I might die.

So I prayed to God to do something

NOW. One minute later a Jamaican

man entered the room, who was sup-

posed to push my bed to the operat-

ing theatre.

Convinced ―My name is Sylvester,‖ he said. ―Do

not worry, everything will be all

right.‖ To this day I‘m convinced that

God sent me an angel to bring me

that message – and what a good job

he did, finding one of the very few

I‘m not sure whether that man still

No need to traipse up to the shops

— good old Google, tap it in, and

here we go, click, click and click

again.

No account yet with this particular

firm, so fill in the spaces: first

name, surname, first line of ad-

dress, postcode… so far, so good.

Method of payment: debit card.

Long number, expiry date. Email

address, password. Click, click

click. Easy as ABC. Just confirm.

Aaaargh! ―There is a mistake on

your card details. Pease check and

try again.‖

OK, I have another go. Check

password and number, definitely

right this time.

You reckon? ―There is a mis-

take…‖ etc.

Try another card: first name, sur-

name, first line of address, post-

code, first name, surname.

Method of payment: credit card.

Long number, expiry date. Email

address, password. Click, click.

Confirm.

Oh no! ―There is a mistake…‖

Try a third card. Same result

Blood pressure rising, I trawl

through several pages of on-

finding a ‗help‘ number.

―Thank you for calling ———.

Please note that we record calls

―If you wish to pay a bill, please

press 1. If you have a query on

your account, please press 2‖ and

so on, until by pressing nothing

you hold on and get… A REAL

PERSON! A human being with a

brain, a voice and, admittedly, a

very sympathetic response to the

headache I‘ve just described to

you, dear reader, who have no

doubt been through similar experi-

ences.

But wait — there‘s more. My

friendly assistant says he can or-

der the socks for me. Just give

him name, address, card type and

number, email address…

―Er, sorry sir, did you say num-

ber 40?‖

―Yes, that‘s right‖

―Hmm, that‘s funny, it says here

that numbers only go up to 37 on

your street. Hold on a minute, I‘ll

try again.‖

I hold on.

No luck. Along with my

neighbours at 38 and 39, I do not

exist.

No lambs wool socks then? I visu-

alise the chilblains smarting on

my freezing toes.

“Never mind sir, I can do it an-

other way.”

Well! This ‗other way‘ seems to

be an old method of writing out

my order, as far as I can make out,

by hand. And bingo! ―That‘s it sir,

all done, when would you like

them delivered? Tomorrow?

That‘ll be another £4.26.‖

Surprisingly, I have kept my cool.

HOLY AND UNHOLY HUMOUR

Mobile groan AFTER a tiring day, a commuter

settled down in his seat and closed

his eyes.

As the train rolled out of the station, the

woman sitting next to him pulled out

her mobile phone and started talking in

a loud voice: ―Hi sweetheart. It's Sue. I'm on the train.

―Yes, I know it's the six thirty and not the four thirty, but I had a long

meeting.‖

―No, honey, not with that Kevin from the accounting office. It was with

the boss.‖

―No sweetheart, you're the only one in my life.‖

―Yes, I'm sure, cross my heart!‖

Fifteen minutes later, she was still rabbiting on. When the tired passen-

ger had had enough, he leaned over and said loudly, ―Sue, hang up the

phone and come back to bed.‖

Sue doesn't use her mobile phone in public any longer.

They said it ―If the sun breaks

through it will

probably get a bit

warmer.‖ - TV

Page 13: men and women who, over the years, have given their lives or … · 2013. 10. 31. · front lines and new life was starting to grow. One of the plants that began to grow in clusters

WHEN this column started over a

year ago we explained what the

PCC was. We hope it will be help-

ful to remind you about its role.

The Parochial Church Council is St

Mary‘s ‗management committee‘. It

is chaired by the rector and has 15

members who are elected on a three-

year basis at the annual meeting. The

PCC is responsible for agreeing our

worship arrangements, the organisa-

tion of all church activities and the

church‘s finances.

At the last meeting on September 16

our treasurer reported on recent ex-

penditure and confirmed that the

church would again be in a deficit

position at the end of the year.

The PCC agreed a revised steward-

ship letter to go to church members,

inviting them to review their giving

with special regard for biblical

teaching and their own particular

circumstances.

Memorials Advice was received from St Al-

ban‘s Diocese on the types of memo-

rials allowed in the ashes area in the

churchyard. A revised letter needs to

be drafted for bereaved families ex-

plaining the conditions for the place-

ment of memorials.

The rector reported that a member of

the congregation had agreed to be

the point of contact with diocesan

education programme ‗Equipping

God‘s People‘.

A transport rota to assist those who

needed help to get to church was

being developed. A new notice board

had just been delivered and would be

erected shortly.

The church is required to undertake a

survey of the building every five

years to ensure that it is being prop-

erly maintained. An architect will be

selected from the diocesan list of

approved architects to undertake this

work.

The rector reported that Alan Dan-

son had been appointed director of

music. There was a report on Alan‘s

appointment in the October edition

of the Church Hill Herald.

We have had to replace our office

computer, which recently failed. The

PCC expressed its gratitude to Gra-

ham Wheeler of Brookside Method-

ist Church for retrieving the data

from the old computer. This has

saved our administrator many hours

of work.

The October edition of the

Herald carried a report ex-

plaining why our building

plans had been held up. The

PCC received a report setting

out the steps being taken to

progress the developments at

the church and the obtaining

of planning permission for

the church hall site. Addi-

tional expenditure of some

£11,890 on professional fees

to cover this work was approved. It

was agreed that a special meeting

would be held on September 30

when the architect would give a de-

tailed presentation on the proposals

prior to their presentation to both the

diocesan advisory committee and

English Heritage in November.

It was agreed that there would again

be a joint Remembrance Service

with Brookside Methodist Church

and East Barnet Baptist Church in

November.

CONTINUING our trawl through

our early church magazines, in

the May 1910 magazine Rector

Maw felt obliged to point out to

parents bringing their children

for Baptism at 3 o’clock on the

second Sunday of the month,

please to be punctual, as one of

the objects of fixing this time is

that children attending the after-

noon service have the opportunity

of seeing the rite of Baptism ad-

ministered.

In July it was reported that the in-

crease in the congregations on Sun-

days, involving the use of the gal-

lery, had made it necessary to made

it necessary to have four persons,

instead of three, to collect the alms.

As we had only three alms bags, the

Rector would be glad if anyone felt

disposed to present us with a fourth

bag.

By October it was reported that

work on the church hall had begun.

In digging the foundations, the

builders came across an old well,

which had to be filled in. Then

some six feet below the surface was

found what appeared to be the bed

of an old pond. In digging out the

mud a skeleton of a stag and a pair

of boots were discovered, the latter

belonging to the period of Henry

the Eighth, so that the pond evi-

dently dated back to the time when

the surrounding land was a part of

Enfield Chase. The Rector also re-

ported that the new rectory was

nearly completed, and he hoped to

move in within a few days.

The great event in the parish, re-

ported in November, was the laying

of the foundation of the church hall,

on Saturday October 15, 1910, after

which ceremony, the ‗new‘ rectory

was formally opened, and Miss

Maw was ―At Home‖ to a large

number of visitors.

In the January 1911 magazine, the

Rector was able to announce that

the hall would be opened on Satur-

day, January 28, at 3 o‘clock. An

account of the day was in the Febru-

ary magazine, as well as looking

forward to the children‘s opening

on February 4 and to the Fairy Play

on the 18th, of which more will ap-

pear in these brief notes next month.

a reality check for Barnet FC,

below par performances re-

However, putting it in context,

to the end of September we had

Keanu Marsh-Brown scored six

goals, while Jake Hyde and

-year-old graduate left-back to

the first team from our Acad-

emy, said, ―Everyone here

wants to get promoted to the

Football League.

―That is all we‘re thinking

about at the moment. Hope-

fully we can get it automati-

cally, but if we have to go via

the play-offs I will be confi-

dent, because on our day we

can beat anyone.‖

Let’s hope it is our day in the

games ahead and that it’s a

November to remember for the

Bees!

Our games this month (3pm

kick off unless otherwise

stated) are:

Saturday 2 Home to Kidder-

minster Harriers who are near

the top of the division. The

Kiddy or Carpetmen finished

high last season too. They have

played at Aggborough Stadium

(capacity 6000) since they were

formed in 1868.

Saturday 9 Away to Dartford,

who are in the lower half of the

division. However, the Bridge-

men or Tunnellers did finish

near the top last season. Adam

Birchall, a former Barnet fa-

vourite, is currently playing for

them.

Tuesday 12 at 7.45 pm Home

to Welling United, who are

near the top of the division.

The Wings were promoted

from the Conference South last

season and are adjusting well to

life in the football conference

despite losing their star de-

fender, Anthony Acheampong,

to the Bees.

Saturday 16 Home to Cam-

bridge United, who have had a

fantastic start to the season.

The Us have a stadium of

nearly 11000 capacity. They

have played in the Conference

since 2006 following relegation

from the League.

Traditionally they wear black

and amber at home… should

make for an interesting match!

Saturday 23 Away to

Grimsby Town, who are near

the top of the division.

The Mariners finished fourth in

the Conference last season,

having been relegated in 2010

for the first time in 100 years

with Barnet surviving on the

last day at their expense.

Here‘s hoping they have for-

given us!

Saturday 30 is the FA Trophy

first round – details of our

match are not yet available.
