Memphis Virtual School

Memphis Virtual School (MVS) offers students in grades 6th

through 12th

expanded academic options by

offering online courses. Students may take up to two additional courses per semester while enrolled in their

home school or enroll on a full time basis and complete all courses in a virtual environment.

MVS allows students to work at their own pace with guidance from an online instructor. Students enrolled in

online courses may work at home, at school, in the library, or at any other place where there is a computer

with high-speed Internet service.

All courses are broken into modules that include ongoing online discussions, research, project work, readings,

collaboration activities, and multi-mode assessments. Online instructors must hold a current teaching license

and are trained to deliver instruction using the Blackboard Learn learning management system.

Online learning is predominately asynchronous. Online instructors are available to assist students during their

posted office hours. However, students can progress throughout the course without being online simultaneous

as their instructor. Within the Blackboard Learn system, a student has the ability to send messages or inquires

to the online instructor. All correspondence is answered within a 24-hour window.

Registration for Exceptional Students

All students that have an Individual Education Plan (IEP) or a 504 Plan must have an IEP Meeting at their home

school, prior to the course request, to determine if modifications and accommodations can be met in a virtual

learning environment.

Special Education Teachers/Guidance Counselor Expectations

Review special education student transcripts. Special education teacher and counselor should review

transcript together.

Identify special education students needing on-line courses to graduate.

Hold IEP Team meetings with discussion concerning placement in on-line courses and accommodations.

The teacher should complete the IEP documentation form. The completed form with required signatures

should be forwarded to the Office of Virtual School.

Students should not be enrolled in on-line courses until the IEP Documentation Form is received in the

office of Virtual Learning.

Primary diagnosis for students needing on-line courses should be Learning Disabled or Intellectually

Gifted.

Special education teacher should make sure that students are following the 4 year plan listed in the IEP.

This should minimize student’s placement in on-line courses.

On-line courses should be the last resort if classes are offered at the school. Special education students

should be given priority for placement in classes taught during the school day.

Allowable accommodations should include the following;

1. Extra time on assignments

2. Extra time on tests

3. Abbreviated assignments

4. Abbreviated test

Office of Virtual Learning Special Education Support Teachers should

Provide a list to the on-line monitors who will monitor the special education students

Provide the IEP At-A-Glance with accommodations to the on-line teachers

Monitor student progress in SMS

Contact parents of students who are not reaching their pacing guide goals in order for schools to hold an

IEP team meeting for dropping course purposes
