What is Long-Term Memory?Long term memory is information that is
retained indefinitely; though some information is lost with the passage of time.
The 3-Stage Memory SystemThe three stages of memory are sensory store,
short-term memory, and long term memory.Sensory store is the initial stage of memory
storage. Information in sensory memory can be lost within a matter of seconds.
Short-term memory is information that is stored from 15 to 30 seconds and is lost if not transferred to long-term memory.
Long term memory is information that is retained indefinitely; though some information is lost with the passage of time.
How is Information Stored into Long-Term Memory? Memory is moved from short-term memory
to long-term memory via rehearsal. In order to move information from short-
term memory to long-term memory via rehearsal, one may need to associate the information with another memory, such as learning the alphabet song in order to retain the letters of the alphabet.
How Does Information Stored in Your Long-Term Memory Affect Your Critical Thinking Skills?Declarative memory is composed of semantic
memory and episodic memory.Semantic memory stores factual information
and the logical rules that we use for critical thinking.
Without semantic memory, we could not formulate answers to logical questions. Semantic memory is what enables us to think critically.
How My Memory has Affected My Ability to LearnWhen it comes to storing information in my
long-term memory, I am more of a visual learner. When listening to someone and trying to remember what they say, I have a difficult time remembering what they say. For instance, last summer, I was sitting in a management seminar for work. I did not retain all information from the lecturer, but I did learn a lot from the printed material.
