Throughout the last several decades, the average American’s life expectancy has increased significantly. Statistics show that in 2011 there were 5.7 million people 85 or older; by 2040 that number is expected to be 14.1 million.

Advances in medicine and technology, as well as growing awareness of healthy lifestyle practices, mean that Americans not only live longer, but they also live better.

However, as the population ages, needs change and senior living communities are becoming a vital partner in addressing those needs. The decision to relocate to a senior living community is not easy. However, making that choice offers a number of important benefits, including physical, emotional, social and mental stimulation, as well as the opportunity to thrive in a safe, supervised environment. Currently, approximately one million Americans live in some type of senior living facility and an anticipated two million seniors will reside in such communities by 2030.

Alzheimer’s is the most expensive disease in America, with costs soaring past a quarter of a trillion dollars.

▪ In 2017, the direct costs to American society of caring for those with Alzheimer’s will total an estimated $2 59 billion. ▪ Average per-person Medicare spending for those with Alzheimer’s and other dementias is more than three times higher than average per-person spending across all other seniors. Medicaid payments are 23 times higher. ▪ Unless something is done, in 2050, Alzheimer’s will cost $1.1 trillion (in 2017 dollars). ▪ Nearly one in every five Medicare dollars is spent on people with Alzheimer’s. In 2050, it will be more than one in every three dollars.

Alzheimer’s kills – and deaths have nearly doubled in the last 14 years. ▪ Alzheimer’s disease is the 6th leading cause of death in the United

States and the 5th leading cause of death for those aged 65 and older. ▪ Deaths from Alzheimer’s increased 89 percent from 2000 to 2014, while deaths from other major diseases (including heart disease, stroke, breast and prostate cancer, and HIV/AIDS) decreased. ▪ Alzheimer’s is the only cause of death among the top 10 in America that cannot be prevented, cured, or even slowed.

Caring for someone with Alzheimer’s is exceptionally demanding. ▪ In 2016, more than 15 million family members and friends provided 18.2 billion hours of unpaid care to people with Alzheimer’s

The BattleBy Micha Shalev

The battle against COVID-19 is far from over. At Dodge Park and Oasis at Dodge Park , we are responsible for protecting the health and safety of our elderly population, who are among the most susceptible to the virus. We are acutely aware of the challenges we face in the coming weeks and months, as we await development of a vac-cine and treatments to safeguard us all from COVID-19. However, while it may be some time before things are back to “normal,” we now find ourselves entering the next phase of our COVID-19 response, with a “new normal” emerging.

One of our top priorities over the past several months, which will continue to be a priority in the future, is creating new ways of engaging our residents, and ad-dressing the potential for loneliness and isolation. Under previously “normal” circumstances, our entire commu-nity—the dining, living, and activities rooms, the library, the courtyard—served as an extension of each resident’s suite. Our expectation under those circumstances was that residents would spend more time engaging with oth-ers in these warm, inviting areas than specifically within their rooms. Enter COVID-19, and that has changed dramatically.

Person-centered care and services have always been foundational to what we do. But one silver lining of the current situation is that our team members have been challenged to think differently about the way we are providing personalized care and attention to our seniors. And, it is no surprise that they have risen to the occasion by finding new creative ways to support and engage all of our residents.

Maintaining the Human ConnectionOne of Dodge Park and Oasis at Dodge Park’s Principles of Service is involving friends and family, and a key com-ponent of our efforts to meet residents’ need for human connection is by leveraging technology. As the impor-tance for quarantining increased, we invested in extra iPads and Samsung Tablets for our communities to help ensure our residents had the opportunity to regularly Skype or FaceTime with their families. Even for residents

who aren’t as able to express themselves, this has had a profound impact on our families, who are so appreciative of the ability to just see their loved one smile. We’ve also heard from numerous team members who say that sup-porting these calls is the highlight of their day.

We took a walk down memory lane with residents while assisting with care or activities of daily living. As an ex-ample, we’ll point out a picture of their daughter’s wed-ding and say “tell me about this day—it must have been so wonderful.”

This and other brain stimulating activities activate neural pathways, and recalling happy events from the past can also improve well-being.

Meaningful InteractionA hug or a smile from a friend is one of the quickest ways to boost one’s spirits, but our caregivers are cur-rently wearing masks, face shields, gowns and gloves and practicing social distancing, making it harder to offer physical affection and comfort as we always did. This has been even more challenging for our residents with memory loss, who may have trouble placing their care-givers on a normal day. Most experts agree that 70–93% of communication is nonverbal, so we’re having frequent conversations with team members about the importance of body language. We encourage them to make good eye contact—socially distanced as much as possible—and to avoid squinting, which can be misconstrued as a sign of disagreement. They try to wear a smile under their face mask so their eyes mirror that smile. Likewise, if a resi-dent is expressing sadness or anger, we encourage them to mirror that expression so the resident can seeand feel empathy and understanding.

We also talk about open body positions, keeping arms open rather than folded or fidgeting, and the importance of using hand gestures, which convey warmth. We also recommend caregivers use a warm tone of voice, and carry a white board—remembering to appropriately sani-tize—if a resident is hard of hearing.

Empathy above All ElseDespite all the measures we put in place, we need to understand and plan for the probability of someone with memory loss forgetting they need to stay in their room. And in these situations, we’re going to do all that we can to approach them with dignity and respect, and avoid making them feel as if they have less control. For our residents suffering from memory loss who are still able to carry on conversations, the Validation® Method teaches us how to tap into their prior coping techniques that helped them get through tough times in the past. We ask them if they can remember a time like this, when they were forced to stay in one place for a long time. Some of them recall a sprained ankle, or a time when our coun-try was at war. We ask them how they got through that time. Was it friends? Was it your family? Was it God? And we remind them that we are their friends. We are part of their family. And we’re going to help them make it through this time also. Humans are very resilient—but we must acknowledge how difficult this time is and validate whatever expressed emotion they might have. Most frequently, we hear how much they miss a loved one, so we can reminisce with them about their mother, daughter, son, or spouse, and encourage them to share what they miss most about that person, actively listen to

their concerns, and allow them to talk about that person, which provides them with great relief.

Overcoming Obstacles TogetherFood is another way many of us show love, and mealtime is an important part of our residents’ routines. Right now, one of the ways we’re protecting our residents from the spread of the virus is by serving them meals in their rooms. Some residents were so accustomed to eating in our dining room, that when they were unable to do that, they didn’t want to eat. I’ve seen team members go so far as to bring a dining table into their resident’s room to help them feel more comfortable—whatever it takes to make this period feel more like the “normal” we were used to. We’ve also seen our Dining Service Coordina-tors create a favorite specialty meal for a resident who is showing signs of a decreased appetite. Similar to local and federal governments, some of our communities will soon be ready to move into various phases of reopening, which could include the availability of outdoor visitation, small group programming, socially distanced meals in our dining rooms, and reopening of resident services such as beauty salons.

We know that this has been an incredibly challenging time for our families. Please know that your mom or dad or grandparent is loved by us, too. Our caregivers spend so much time with our residents that they become like their own families. This situation has challenged us all in ways we never could have imagined, but I can tell you that the individuals who are caring for your family are some of the most dedicated, caring people I’ve had the pleasure of working with in my career. We are going to get through this together and we cannot thank you enough for the trust you place in us each day. It is our honor to serve your family member.

REVIEWS FROM CARING.COM

The atmosphere is beautiful at Oasis. It’s a gorgeous facility that’s very light. You don’t feel like you’re in a skilled nursing home, rest home or assisted living at all. It’s just a beautiful space, and I really think that that’s the space that affects people and visitor’s mood. The staff is very friendly, very caring and very responsive. The care so far for my mother has been excellent. They seem to know how to handle her, what her needs are and what to do with her. She does not participate much in the activities but they do have varied activities and activities going on all day. And you know staff are there looking out after the residents all day. The food seems to be good too. My mother’s room is also very nice. It’s a single room with her private bathroom. It’s well furnished, very bright and cheery. She has a wonderful view of Worcester. She can see Indian Lake and that’s very nice. Overall, I am very pleased with the care.

Dodge Park is a one of kind care facility with a unique community approach and truly compassionate caregivers. They have been providing my husband with outstanding advanced care, positive group stimulation, enjoyable activities, superb nutritious meals, and a clean, secure, and comfortable environment. We are so grateful to have found Dodge Park.

To know that my Mom is safe every day means the world to me. She has been a resident at Dodge Park for just over a year now and the difference in her is amazing. She is very happy living there and she appreciates how much the staff do for her day in and day out. She tells me all the time she feels lucky to have made so many friends including the residents and staff. The entire staff continue to go above and beyond every day with her care. Her room is immaculate, her clothes are always clean, the dining hall is spotless, kudos to the staff for the upkeep of such a large facility. I had the privilege of participating in one of the day hab programs on Patriots Day with Mom and very impressed by the structure of the activities planned surrounding that holiday. Ben & Micha’s knowledge of dementia attributes to the well being of all the residents, the monthly newsletter is full of facts that are very helpful to anyone who has a friend/relative with dementia. Every Saturday I visit so Mom and I can par-ticipate with Jorge doing aerobics, the smiles he puts on the residents face is priceless, such a caring gentlemen. I would highly recommend Dodge Park Rest Home.

Dear Mr. Shalev and Mr. Herlinger,

Today I received the beautiful plaque stating a tree had been planted in my mother’s memory. Thank you is not adaquate to express my gratitude for such a thoughtful gesture and being that my mother was an avid gardener, it’s even more poignant.

Additionally, I want to thank you for the past five years she spent at Dodge Park. The care, love and compassion she received was beyond anything I could have hoped for and for that, I thank you most of all.

Sincerely,Sylvia Spencer

Thank you... August 10, 2020

Dodge Park Rest Home Joins Forces with UV Angel to Combat Spread of CoronavirusUV Angel Air technology helps to improve safety measures at assisted living facility.

More than 40% of coronavirus deaths in the U.S. are linked to nursing homes, and in Massachusetts, the percentage is higher at 64%, according to an article published in The New York Times on July 30. Dodge Park Rest Home in Worcester, Mass decided to invest in UV Angel, a leader in pathogen control technology, and installed UV Angel Air treatment systems to com-plement Dodge Park’s infection control and existing safety efforts creating a cleaner and safer environment for its residents and employees.

“The safety of our residents and staff is our highest priority, and UV Angel Air serves as a key addition to our existing infection prevention measures,” said Micha Shalev, co-owner and administrator of Dodge Park Rest Home. “COVID-19 has taken a toll on all long-term care facilities around the country and we continuously look for new and innovative ways to help combat the spread of coronavirus between staff and residents. The UV Angel Air units are a key piece of our overall safety strategy, and we hope to give our residents and staff peace of mind that we are doing everything we can to improve their environment.”

Along with adding an infection prevention consultant, Karen Bain from Eisenstein, Flaherty and Associates,Dodge Park’s increased cleaning and infection control procedures included utilizing electro-static spraying, additional personal protective equipment (PPE), frequent COVID-19 tests for patients and staff, and UV Angel Air units that treat the air by neutralizing potentially dangerous pathogens. The patented UV Angel Air combines standard in-ceil-ing lighting with a proprietary UV-C air treatment

system. Air is pulled into the sealed high-intensity UV-C chamber where it has been shown in laboratory tests to neutralize pathogens with up to 99.99% effec-tiveness. Treated air is then returned to the room, 24/7.

“Nursing homes and assisted living facilities have been hit hard by the effects of COVID-19,” said Tom Byrne,CEO of UV Angel. “Using technology like the UV Angel Air can help reduce the spread of infectious aerosols carried in by staff and possibly transmitting to residents. Unlike other technologies, UV Angel Air is an engineering control. It constantly and seamlessly treats the air neutralizing pathogens simultaneously, while busy staff continue to tend to residents.

Ray Sizer, president of National E Solutions, brought the UV Angel Air product to the attention of Dodge Park Nursing Home.

More About UV AngelUV Angel is a pathogen control technology company that uses years of advanced research and developmentin ultraviolet light to help make the environments around us cleaner and safer by reducing harmfulpathogens. Fully automated, patented and proven safe, the company’s UV-C technology monitors and cleansthe surfaces we touch and the air we breathe. Memory care at Dodge Park Rest Home and Oasis at Dodge Park:

Where everyone knows your name II magine a place where individuals suffering from Alzheimer’s and dementia feel right at home. Imagine a place where they can regain a sense of fulfillment. Dodge Park Rest Home and Oasis at Dodge Park on Randolph Road in Worcester are just such a setting. The facilities’ N’efesh to N’efesh Memory Care Program (from the Hebrew for “soul to soul”) strives to help those strug-gling with memory loss at any stage to build and maintain cognitive ability. Based on research from a variety of recent studies, Dodge Park Rest Home and Oasis’s specially designed program is comprised of six pillars of activities in which memory care resi-dents and their families join in. These include Physical Exercise, Stress Reduction, Cognitive Exercise, Specialized Digital Programs, Purposeful Social Activities and Support Groups and Resident Council. Resident-centered care is at the cornerstone of the N’efesh to N’efesh Memory Care Program at Dodge Park and Oasis at Dodge Park. Caregivers, staff and the management team are specially

trained to focus on the strengths of each person and to understand a resi-dent’s preferences, accomplishments and family ties. Each resident’s pref-erences and life story contribute to the individualized care plan and activi-ties they take part in, from dining choices to daily activities and specialized care. Oasis’s Activity Coordinator Amy Bustin says: “One of my favorite activities at Oasis at Dodge Park is our Reminiscing Program. Here the residents and caregivers share their personal stories. We use this time to learn about each other and recall experiences from the past. A simple question of ‘where did you grow up?’ brought up old memories for one resident and we were soon talking about summers at ‘the World’s Fair’ in St. Louis. For residents, re-calling the past is important as their disease can rob them of these moments. Care-

givers in turn have been able to learn about the lives of the residents. Using these tools has seamlessly turned my resi-dents from the people I assist to those who feel like family. I feel blessed to know each of them. “In my experience, music has been one of the most pow-

erful tools we have in the memory-care program. One resident could not recall how many children they had but was able to sing all of the words to ‘God Bless America’ with me. I have used sing-a-longs many times to redirect those that are upset. The familiarity of the music is comforting while sharing the song experience creates a bond between residents and the aides. A quiet room can quickly be filled with ‘Take Me Out to the Ball Game’ or ‘Grand Ol’ Flag.’ The variety of music pro-grams we have each week is engaging—from drum circle to upbeat aerobics to quiet background music early in the morning. Music has become one of the best ways to make connections on a daily basis.” www.oasisatdodgepark.com https://dodgepark.com 877-363-4775 508-853-8180

‘We feel so fortunate that we found the Oasis’ Judy Atkins Bath’s mother Nancy Atkins has been a resident at Oasis at Dodge Park since just after the facility opened in 2017 and is thriving in the environment due in large part to the N’efesh to N’efesh Memory Care Program. “What works best for my mom,” Ms. Bath said, “is the music that’s offered, which brings back memories of entertainers she enjoyed when she was younger: Tom Jones, Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin and Roger Whitaker. We have a little player in her room too. When the music starts, she is in the front row center and singing and very happy and engaged with it. When Bill McCarthy announced ‘this one’s for you, Nancy, and broke into Que Sera Sera (‘Que sera, sera/whatever will be, will be/the future’s not ours to see/Que sera, sera/what will be, will be’), she loved it. It is just wonderful for Oasis’s staff and (Activity Director) Amy Bustin to do this. Amy’s great, dancing and clapping with the residents. We feel so fortunate that we found the Oasis.” `Mom is doing fabulous at the Oasis’ Lisa Swalec’s mother Margaret Leroux—”Judy”—benefits immensely from the affection showered on her by an Oasis staff that is “compassionate and patient,” Ms. Swalec says. “She was at home with twenty four-hour care for two years. Oasis gives her more socialization than she was getting. My father was briefly at Dodge Park before he died. The amaz-ing thing is the music, Saturday nights and Sunday after-noons. The whole facility is memory care and residents are allowed to move about; they are not confined to one wing.”

Older people face mental health risksSocial distancing during the COVID-19 pandemic is essential to maintaining your health, but isolation can have a profound impact on one’s mental health. Older people (60+) especially may be vulnerable to depres-sion, loneliness, and other problems. The Conversation website has some useful advice for not giving in to thenegative effects of staying at home:

• Plan your day. If you’re not working and your home is already as clean as it’s going to get, you may betempted to just stay in bed and binge on Netflix. Resist the urge. Set up a routine to give your day somestructure. Take up some hobbies to occupy your time—gardening, jigsaw puzzles, online classes, and the like. A schedule can give your otherwise empty days some meaning.• Stay active. Exercise, do yoga, or just walk around your home for 20 minutes at a time instead of just sitting in your chair (or on your sofa) all day. If pos-sible and safe, take a walk or bike ride around your neighborhood, while staying socially distant, of course. Keeping your blood pumping helps your heart, but also boosts your endorphins and overall mental health.• Know your risk factors. The AARP Foundation has a tool called Connecvt2Affect to help you measure theimpact of your social isolation. If you’re at an elevated risk, seek out a therapist or other support servicesavailable in your area.• Get out of the house—safely. Whether you’re go-ing to the store or just taking a walk, don’t take any chances. Wear a face mask and bring hand sanitizer. Stay clear or other people who aren’t taking necessary precautions. A change of scenery can improve your state of mind.

• Reach out to others. Stay in contact with your family and friends with phone calls, email, Zoom meetings, and other options. Look for opportunities to volunteer online. And don’t be afraid to ask for help if you need it.

Protect your eyes during the outbreakWill your eyewear help keep you safe from the corona-virus? Maybe, if you treat it right. The U.S. News &World Report offers some guidelines on how to wear your glasses and contact lenses effectively during thepandemic:

• Contacts vs. glasses. While some people are switch-ing to eyeglasses, the American OptometricAssociation says there’s no evidence that wearing con-tacts lenses increases one’s risk of COVID-19infection. Still, make sure to wash your hands thor-oughly before inserting and removing your lenses, clean them properly, and don’t touch your eyes while wearing them. If you develop cold- or flu-likesymptoms, stop wearing them immediately.

• Clean your glasses daily. Clean your glasses every day, using soap, water, and a microfiber lens cloth—not a paper towel or corner of your shirt, which can scratch your lenses. Hand-wash microfiber clothsregularly with a gentle soap and hang them up to dry.

• Don’t set glasses down carelessly. Placing them on a desk, table, or bar can be risky if the surface isn’tclean. If you must take your glasses off, put them into a clean case.

• Avoid string holders. Hanging glasses around your neck can expose the interior of the lenses to dropletsin the air, bringing them too close to your eyes and face. Again, store them in a case until you needthem again.

MONEY MATTERS

Financial survival tips for the pandemicThe COVID-19 pandemic has forced many people outof work and created financial problems for familiesstruggling to survive. The Courier Journal offers someadvice for staying afloat:

• Make a budget. Sit down with a piece of paper orsome budget software and analyze your monthlyexpenses—food, housing, gasoline, and the like.Track your spending to ensure the numbers areaccurate. This will give you a good idea of whatyou’re paying for, and also what you can reduce oreliminate.

• Prioritize your bills. Generally speaking, your toppriorities are food, utilities (gas, electricity, andwater), shelter (rent or mortgage), and your vehicle.Pay those before you pay anything else.

• Ask for extensions. Many lenders, sympathetic tothe plight pf consumers, are open to delayedpayment plans. Contact your landlord, mortgagecompany, credit card company, student loanprovider, and other people and organizations youowe money to, and try to negotiate for better termsand rates.

• Cut costs and increase income. Look for sales anddeals when you buy. Examine how much you spendon entertainment and look for saving strategies. Also,go through your home and look for items you cansell on Etsy or eBay to generate some extra cash.

• Don’t touch your retirement savings. You may betempted to dip into your 401(k) or other retirementsavings plan. Aside from possible tax penalties, youprobably don’t want to take out money that you’llneed later unless you absolutely have to.

Money to save? Here’s where to stash itIn these uncertain economic times, many of us are looking to increase our savings. The personal savings rate—the amount people are saving as a per-centage of their disposable income—rose to 33% in April, upfrom 13% in March and much higher than the 8% it had stood at for months, according to the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis. One article from CNN looks at your options:

• Traditional savings accounts. Interest rates may be low—or nonexistent—but the traditional savings account offers con-venience and security. Still, larger banks charge higher month-ly fees that can add up, so do your homework before opening an account.

• Online savings accounts. These offer a higher rate of return, along with easy access and stability. Like traditional accounts, they’re FDIC insured and allow you to keep your existing checking account. Read the fine print, though. Some will charge a fee if you don’t make any deposits or withdrawals within a certain number of months, or if your account falls below a certain amount.

• CDs. A certificate of deposit is a safe place to stash your money if you won’t need it right away. You agree to leave your money alone for a certain amount of time–six months, a year, five years, or more. The longer you sign up for, the more mon-ey you’ll earn.

• Money market accounts. These generally offer a higher intertest rate than standard savings accounts, and many allow you to write checks off the account. They may require a higher minimum deposit, and again, can charge fees for inactive accounts and other specifications.

• High-yield checking accounts. Sometimes called reward checking accounts, these are usually offered by communi-ty banks or credit unions. They typically offer rewards for meeting specific account requirements. Their interest rates can be higher than other accounts, but you may have to agree to a certain number of debit card payments or a specific amount of spending per month to earn the higher rate.

FAMILY MATTERS

Tackle the homeschool challengeIt’s unclear whether all schools will reopen in the fall, but many parents are concerned enough about thespread of the coronavirus to keep their children homeno matter what. Homeschooling can be a challenge, asmany have already learned. The Insider website sharesthese tips from experts on how to educate kids at homeand retain your sanity while you do it:

• Set up a schedule. Children do best when they havea consistent, reliable routine to follow. Schedule a few activities for the same time every day so they know what to expect. Put up a board with a daily schedule so it’s easy for everyone to keep track.

• Create a dedicated learning space. Set off a portion of your home for school activities. This will help keep kids free from distractions and focus on their lessons.

• Take breaks. Don’t try to schedule every minute of every day. Keep learning blocks to 30–50 minutes, and allow kids to relax and play between educationrelated activities. Feel free to take a day off every now and again so everyone can refresh and recharge.

• Get outdoors. If you have a backyard, use it as an outdoor classroom. Have children collect leaves and stick, study birds and insects, learn about trees, plants, and flowers, and enjoy a little unstructured play.

• Try some nontraditional schooling. Math and science are important, but children can learn in lots of different ways. Involving them in baking and cooking, for example, can teach them about measurements and fractions. Older kids can help you with projects like building a bookshelf orchanging a tire.

Age-appropriate chores for childrenAssigning chores to children is about more than making them work. It teaches them that in a family, everyone works together. Yahoo Life suggests these tasks for specific age groups:• Age 2–5: Sequencing. Have kids put their laundry in a hamper, clean up their toys, and put dishes in thesink after meals.• Age 6–7: Helping. They can feed your pets, assist with meal preparation, and set the table.• Age 8–9: Placement. At this age children should be re-sponsible for managing their sports and athleticequipment, emptying the dishwasher, and folding and put-ting away their own laundry.• Age 10–11: Independence. Have kids this age make their own breakfast and lunch, take the trash out andbring empty cans back in, and vacuum their bedroom.• Age 12–15: Priorities. They should take on their own laundry, wash the car, do yard work, and cleantheir own bedroom.• Age 16+: Life. Prepare kids for grownup life by teaching them how to iron, sew buttons on clothes, cookmeals, and take care of car maintenance.

SCIENCE LAB

The case of the runaway moonTitan, the largest moon of the ringed planet Saturn, ismoving out. Not just that, but at a faster speed thananyone previously realized. CNN reports that Titan ismoving away from Saturn at a rate of four inches peryear—100 times faster than previously thought—dueto the moon’s gravity pulling at the planet and creatinga temporary bulge. Other moons in the solar systemalso migrate, but at a slower rate. Earth’s moon, forexample, is pulling away some 1.5 inches per year.

Titan, larger than the planet Mercury, orbits Saturn ata distance of 759,000 miles. Titan is the only moon known to have a considerable atmosphere and, aside from Earth, is the only planetary body in the solar sys-tem with liquid rivers and lakes on its surface.

Titan will be visited by a NASA probe, Dragonfly, in2034. The drone will fly through the moon’s thickatmosphere and visit an impact crater formed tens ofthousands of years ago, where scientists believe they might find ingredients for life.

Parrot beats humans at shell gameParrots can do more than mimic words. At least one of them can beat humans in a classic memory game. TheLiveScience website reports that an African gray parrot named Griffin defeated 21 Harvard students in theso-called shell game. In the game, an object is placed underneath one of three plastic cups, which are then moved quickly around. The goal is to keep track of which cup the object is under.

In the experiment, Griffin beat the 21 undergraduates in 12 of 14 games. Researchers note that he may notbe average for a parrot, though. He’s 22 years old, and has been the subject of numerous cognitive andcommunication studies since the age of seven and a half weeks. His owner, a Harvard psychologist, has alsotaught him how to pronounce about 30 words and un-derstand at least 40, including the names of colors.

Quotes“I am among those who think that science has greatbeauty. A scientist in his laboratory is not only a technician: he is also a child placed before naturalphenomena which impress him like a fairy tale.”—Marie Curie

Beta-Glucans…What are they and what benefits do they provide?

Beta-glucans are carbohydrates, or sugars, found in the cell walls of some plants such as oats and barley. Beta-glucans are one form of fiber called soluble fiber. Soluble fiber is recommended by Registered Dietitians to help improve cholesterol levels. Scientific studies have examined the potential health benefits beta-glucans may have, particularly in the area of cholesterol and heart disease and diabetes.

Beta-glucans are also found in certain bacteria and fungi, including certain mushroom varieties. Researchers have been studying the positive effects of mushrooms on the immune system. As part of this physiology, research is also showing that beta-glucans have anti carcinogenic (cancer-preventing) activity.

Beta-glucans in oats is showing promise to significantly reduce LDL (“bad”) cholesterol. Because beta-glucans are a soluble fiber, they help slow down digestion in the intestines. This can be particularly beneficial for those with diabetes, as the slower carbohydrates are digested and broken down into glucose (sugar), the slower these sugars are absorbed, keeping blood sugar levels more stable. As beta-glucans travel through the digestive system they take cholesterol with it, keeping it from building up in the body which otherwise could end up contributing to clogged arteries.

Food labeling guidelines allow certain health claims to be used on food packaging. The effects the soluble fiber, including beta-glucans, has on cholesterol is one such allowance. Cereal advertisements, such as Cheerios commercials are using such health claim allowances to promote their food product.

Oats are an easy and delicious way to include beta-glucans into your diet. As a breakfast cereal, quick snack or even dessert such as a topping to an apple crisp, it’s a very versatile food. Add dried fruits to oatmeal to add even more nutrition. Sprinkle oat cereal on yogurt for a more satisfying and filling snack.

I will be available to meet with family member to address any concern or questions regarding dietary needs or special diet for their loved one. I can be reach at Dodge Park Rest Home number (508-853-8180).

Citrus FruitsLemons, limes, grapefruits and oranges are all considered citrus fruits. And don’t forget to include

their relatives such as pomelos, tangerines, mandarin oranges and blood oranges. Citrus fruits are fat free, sodium free, cholesterol free and low in calories, making them an excellent part of a healthy diet.

Everyone knows that citrus fruits such as oranges are full of vitamin C. Vitamin C has many functions in the body but it is most known for its role in boosting our immune system. Another important role vitamin C plays is its ability to help the body absorb iron, a min-eral which helps prevent anemia. Vitamin C also helps prevent a disease called scurvy. Scurvy causes bleeding gums and the reopening of poorly healed wounds. Scurvy was once a large problem amongst sailors before it was discovered that feeding them limes cured this ailment. Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant.Antioxidants are compounds that help prevent cell damage caused by unstable molecules called free radicals. Including plenty of antioxidants in the diet helps reduce the risk of certain types of cancers, heart disease and other medical conditions.

Citrus fruits are a good source of fiber. 2/3 of the fiber in citrus fruits is soluble fiber, which aids in reducing cholesterol levels, 1/3 is insoluble fiber, which is im-portant for a healthy digestive system. Citrus, like all fruits and vegetables, contains phytochemicals that are beneficial for health. The particular phytochemicals high in citrus fruits are flavonoids which are particu-larly beneficial for heart health.

Citrus fruits are also high in the mineral potassium. Potassium is used by the body for fluid balance, so-dium balance and muscle contraction, including the heart muscle. Eating plenty of potassium-rich foods can lower your risk for heart disease and stroke.

Citrus fruits are relatively low on the glycemic index scale when compared with breads, juices and other fruits. This means that the glucose in citrus fruits is released into the blood at a slower rate which helps control blood glucose levels in people with diabetes.

Including citrus fruits into your daily diet is easy. Eating oranges and grapefruits make a great breakfast or snack. Add lime zest to salsa for a fresh, bright taste. Squeeze lemon juice into water to add variety to your fluid intake or choose 100% citrus fruit juices. Grill citrus slices and serve with chicken or fish. Combine lemon juice and olive oil and create a heart healthy salad dressing. Adding lemon juice to potato salad is also a great way to boost not only flavor but nutrition as well. Citrus fruit ices make a refreshing dessert to round out your day.

ALZHEIMER’S/DEMENTIA ACTIVITIES

Paper Mache ApplesThings You’ll Need:• Paper mache mix for each

participant• Large mixing bowl• Small bowl for each

participant• Newspaper• Washable red paint• Washable green paint• Washable yellow paint• Small twigs• Hot glue gun

1. Prepare the location. Prepare a large flat surface to be able to do the paper mache project. Cover the work area and surrounding floor with several layers of newspaper.

2. Mix and divide. In a large bowl, mix the paper mache mix according to the package directions. If you’re doing the project with a group, be sure that each person is equippedwith their own small bowl of paper mache mix.

3. Tear the newspaper into long narrow strips. Narrow strips will allow the crafter to have better control over the newspa-per when applying the paper mache.

4. Crumble newspaper. Crumble a half sheet of newspaper into a tight wad. Hold paper wad securely in one hand and begin wrapping paper mache strips around it with the otherhand. When the paper mache ball is formed, allow it to dry completely.

5. Paint the paper mache apple in the desiredapple color. This may take three or four layers of paint to accomplish. When the final layer of paint is dried, insert a twig into the top. The twig will serve as the apple’s stem.Secure the “stem” with a drop of hot glue.

Autumn Placemats1. Gather and press leaves at the peak of their color.

2. Determine the desired size of your placemats. Most pla-cemats are a range of 9x12 inches up to 12x18 inches orso, with the final size left to your discretion.

3. Cut two sheets of clear contact paper or plastic adhesive film to the size of your desired placemat PLUS one inch extra on each side.

4. Peel off the paper backing and place the sheet sticky side up on a flat surface.

5. Place the leaves on the sticky surface in a pleasing pat-tern.

6. Peel off the paper backing from your second sheet and carefully “sandwich” the leaves between the two sheets.

7. Press carefully to ensure good adhesion and remove bubbles.

8. Cut the excess plastic off around the perimeter of your leaves

DODGE PARKREST HOME

The Bible presents growing old as a normal, natural part of life in this world. There is honor involved in the aging process, because growing old is normally accompanied by increased wisdom and experience. “Gray hair is a crown of splendor; it is attained by a righteous life” (Proverbs 16:31; see also Proverbs 20:29). God wants us to remember that life is short (James 4:14) and that the beauty of youth is soon gone (Proverbs 31:30; 1 Peter 1:24).

Jewish tradition emphasizes that taking care of a parent is a tremendous blessing and mitzvah. As the Talmud in Shabbat 127a says: “These are the fruits a person enjoys in this world, and continues to enjoy them in the World to Come. They are: honoring one’s parents…”

This is particularly true when the elderly have diminished physical and mental capacity, and are confronting their own mortality. But the task of taking care of them need not feel overwhelming.

Among the most disturbing aspects of growing old—especially in cultures that set a high value on rugged individualism— is the increasing frequency of senile dementia as human lifespan increases. It seems eminently unfair that people so afflicted should be robbed of their intellectual, emotional and social vitality while their physical bodies continue to survive. Alzheimer’s disease is a particularly difficult pill to swallow because the cause is unknown and it does not seem to be related to any particularly bad health habits. While progression of Alzheimer’s can be stalled, in part, by continued active involvement in mind-stimulating and physical activity, progression of the disease is nevertheless inexorable.

With Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia on the rise, finding quality care can be a challenge. Recognizing this challenge, The Dodge Park Rest Home and Oasis at Dodge Park developed a new program designed specifically to meet the needs of residents with memory loss. Based on years of experience caring for Alzheimer’s and dementia residents, Dodge Park and The Oasis at Dodge Park Programs partners with family members and care providers to develop a framework that supports the individual, physical, emotional and spiritual needs of memory impaired residents through Cognitive, Fitness and Wellness design.

While there is currently no cure for most progressive forms of dementia, it doesn’t mean we’re powerless against them. Mounting research is building an understanding that there may be ways to slow the progression and change the pathologies of many common dementias, giving those afflicted with them and their families the possibility of more precious, fulfilling moments together.

2. Keeping ActiveMeaningful activities promote a sense of well being, provide enjoyment, maintain functioning levels and support independence. The daily program offers small and large group activities to appeal to each resident’s personal interests.

3. Worthy StaffTaking care of those with memory loss takes a special caregiver. The N’efesh to N’efesh Program staff is specially trained to work with residents to make their lives better by including activities and care that promote self-esteem, laughter, fun and enjoyment of everyday life. Caring for a family member with memory loss can be extremely difficult. In a community that serves residents with Alzheimer’s and dementia, the task of caring for a loved one is shared by many dedicated and highly-trained individuals. With the knowledge that a loved one is well taken care of, caregivers can enjoy more fulfilling time together.
