INTRODUCTION A memorial is a lasting symbol of remembrance and should be chosen with care. It is the final gift that will be given to a loved one.

The designs shown in this brochure represent some of the more popular memorials. However, there are few limits to the design, materials and carvings you can choose to create the memorial of your choice.

Almost any design can generally be produced in any material, although it is worth bearing in mind that intricate carvings usually made in marble, cannot always be reproduced in granite.

If you have a photograph or sketch of a memorial you like the look of, come and show it to us. We can work from this to reproduce the design onto the memorial of your choice.

INFORMATION & ADVICE

All cemeteries and churchyards have regulations concerning the size, design and materials that can be used in memorials. In many cases these regulations are intended to protect precious space and an environment that can be many hundreds of years old. With our local knowledge we can advise you of the designs, sizes and finishes most likely to be acceptable to the diocese, or cemetery superintendent.

Generally churchyards will only accept memorials of natural stone. Such stones include Portland (also used on war graves), York (limited supply), Nabresina, Wessex Buff and slate. Some churchyards will allow honed (matt finished) green or mid-grey granites. Inscriptions usually have to be cut and leaded, or painted in black, white or gray enamel.

Marble, black and coloured granites are nowadays usually reserved for cemeteries, as are ledger slabs, kerb sets, brick graves and mausoleums.

We recommend allowing a minimum of nine months to one year for the soil to settle before adding a memorial to a grave.

Stone is a natural material and its price determined by many factors, including labour costs and transport and in some cases, availability. We can advise on acceptable alternatives should a stone you like prove difficult to source.

If you are looking to choose a responsibly sourced material, you should be aware that granite and marble tend to come from quarries in India and China.

As a natural material, stone can vary enormously in colour and pattern. Welham Jones cannot guarantee a colour or pattern match to an existing sample or erected memorial.

To deter natural subsidence, the memorial may be secured with a rail, bearer or anchor. As an associate of the National Association of Memorial Masons (NAAM), Welham Jones abides by the code of practice and takes every measure to ensure we adhere to their standards.

Permission will also be required from the church or cemetery authority before erecting a memorial. In order to do this, we will need to submit detailed drawings and descriptions of the memorial, material, method of fixing and inscription. In return, the relevant authority will levy a fee.

Our guarantee covers you against faulty materials and workmanship, but not acts of vandalism or accidental damage. We suggest you take out an appropriate insurance policy or seek to add cover to your existing household policy.

WHAT WE WILL DOOnce you have chosen the memorial you would like to place, and are comfortable with the likely cost, there are a number of procedures we will put in place:

- We will prepare a detailed estimate for your approval: only when this is signed will we progress your order.

- Detailed drawings to include the inscription will be prepared for your approval.

- An application to the cemetery or diocese (as appropriate) will be prepared for your signature, and then submitted on your behalf along with the fee, which will be covered by your deposit.

- Should any changes be required at this stage we will liaise between you and the authorities to ensure all parties are content.

- Once permission has been obtained we will instruct the manufacture of your memorial; 10 to 12 weeks should be allowed for this depending upon time of year and availability of stone.

- We will invoice you the balance on your account once your memorial has been erected.

Please note: all memorials remain the property of Welham Jones until accounts are fully paid.

MAKING YOUR CHOICEWhen buying a memorial, there are three main decisions to make:

1. The stone

2. The style

3. The inscription

Your choice of stone may sometimes be made for you and the style choice could be limited if the memorial is to be erected in a churchyard. Otherwise the choices are almost limitless and we have prepared some guidance that might help make your choice.

THE STONE

Granite

There is no finer choice than everlasting granite. Impervious to weather, it will retain its beauty without deterioration and is available in a vast range of colours from around the world. Some colours are depicted in this brochure, plus we have many samples to view in our offices. Granite is not always permitted for use in churchyards, but when it is, it will usually be in a mid grey colour (Karin) or, sometimes, in green and to a honed (matt) finish.

Marble

Most widely used due to the relative ease with which it can be carved, marble is ideal for more ornate memorials. Blue-white in colour and veined, it has few imperfections. Marble is not suitable for use in churchyards, however.

Natural stone

Most widely used in churchyards, natural stone is porous and weathers to give a variety of reds and greens as algae and lichens grow on the surface. Predominantly buff in colour, the selection includes York stone, Wessex Buff, Portland and Nabresina.

Others

We can also source slate, generally grey in colour, Savernake (green) or Irish limestone, although this is increasingly difficult to obtain.

STYLE OF MEMORIALFor complex designs, or if you have a photograph of a style you would like to emulate; please discuss your choices with us. Examples of popular base and top designs are sketched below. These can be used in any combination of lawn memorial, of any stone and are suitable for cemetaries and some churchyards. Standalone f loral vases can be used where a simple base is preferred.

THE INSCRIPTIONSWe have put together some suggestions to assist you in composing a succinct, yet vital tribute. As a general rule, we advise, regardless of whether the message is serious or humorous, to keep it simple.

It is also worth leaving room for an additional inscription if there are other family members likely to be interred in the same grave.

IN LOVING MEMORY OF

SACRED TO THE MEMORY OF

IN EVER LOVING MEMORY OF

MEMORY IS A GOLDEN CHAIN THAT BINDS US

TILL WE MEET AGAIN

GONE ARE THE DAYS WE USED TO SHARE BUT IN OUR HEARTS

YOU’RE ALWAYS THERE

GOD TAKES OUR LOVED ONES FROM OUR HOMES

BUT NEVER FROM OUR HEARTS

FOREVER IN OUR THOUGHTS

A LOVING HUSBAND AND FATHER IS NOW AT REST

FOR EACH OF US HE DID HIS BEST HIS LOVE WAS GREAT HIS HEART WAS KIND

A BEAUTIFUL MEMORY LEFT BEHIND

PEACE PERFECT PEACE

REST IN PEACE

IT BROKE OUR HEARTS TO LOSE YOU BUT YOU DID NOT GO ALONE

FOR PART OF US WENT WITH YOU THE DAY GOD CALLED YOU HOME

OH FOR THE TOUCH OF A VANISHED HAND AND THE SOUND OF A VOICE THAT IS STILLED

TALIS VITA (Such a life)

TOO DEARLY LOVED TO BE FORGOTTEN

THE LORD’S MY SHEPHERD I SHALL NOT WANT

LOVED AND MISSED BY ALL THE FAMILY

ON EARTH ONE GENTLE SOUL LESS IN HEAVEN ONE ANGEL MORE

GOD HAS YOU IN HIS KEEPING WE HAVE YOU IN OUR HEARTS

ALL THROUGH YOUR SUFFERING GREAT PATIENCE YOU BORE TIL GOD CALLED YOU HOME

TO SUFFER NO MORE

WE MISS HIS SMILE, HIS CHEERY WAY WE MISS THE THINGS HE USED TO SAY

AND WHEN OLD TIMES WE OFT RECALL IT’S THEN WE MISS HIM MOST OF ALL

SHE GAVE US LOVE IN FULLEST MEASURE CARE, DEVOTION, MEMORIES TO TREASURE

IN OUR HEARTS SHE WILL ALWAYS LIVE THIS DEAREST MOTHER GOD COULD GIVE

A TINY FLOWER LENT NOT GIVEN TO BUD ON EARTH AND BLOOM IN HEAVEN

GOD GAVE A TREASURE FOR A WHILE TO FILL US WITH HIS LOVE

AND THEN HE TOOK OUR DARLING CHILD TO DWELL WITH HIM ABOVE
