Memorial Day

Memorial Day is an important day for many Americans. We may feel excited because we have a day off from work or school, but there is a very serious reason why we do. Memorial Day is a day that we remember and honor all of the soldiers who lost their lives fighting for America. After the Civil War ended, people decided to create a special day to visit and decorate the gravesites of the soldiers who died. Americans called this day “Decoration Day.”

In 1882, the name of the holiday was officially changed to “Memorial Day.” Today, it is celebrated on the last Monday in May. Many Americans take advantage of the day off and the warm weather by having barbeques, picnics, and going to the beach. However, there are ways we can celebrate Memorial Day that will honor the real meaning of this great day. There are many parades that take place around the country. People wear red, white, and blue to pay tribute to our nation and our soldiers. We can also find a friend or family member that is part of our military and thank that person for his or her service and sacrifice. Americans show respect for the country by flying the American flag or having a moment of silence for the many soldiers that we have lost throughout time.

Living in a free country is a wonderful privilege. It is important to stop and show appreciation for those who keep us safe. How will you celebrate Memorial Day?
