REAL SONG: LIQUIDEEP

The duo that became the hottest property on the local house scene gave Roya Varjavandi an exclusive interview and introduced their latest single “Alone”.

1 “I had started losing a little bit of hope. I didn’t know if this music would work, but I wanted to give it a try before giving up and doing something else,” says Liquideep singer, songwriter and producer Jonathan “Ziyon” Christian.

After spending time with his step father, jazz muso Victor Masondo, Ziyon 5 decided to move permanently to South Africa. “I’ve always been into production, says Ziyon, who is originally from Nashville, Tennessee, “so I started producing for acts such as Swazi Dlamini, Loyiso Bala and Gloria Bosman.” Thankfully, he opted to stick it out, a commitment supported by his new friend, DJ, producer Thabo “Ryzor” Shokgolo.

10 Who is DJ Ryzor and how does he fit into the Liquideep puzzle and the making of the band? Hailing from Alexandra, Johannesburg, Ryzor’s home was their initial meeting place. “I’ve been DJ-ing for years, and I was just getting into production when we met,” says the DJ and IT fanatic. As Ziyon had a new interest in house culture and wanted to learn to DJ, it was a 15 chance for them to exchange skills.

Ziyon advises that young people should identify what it is they want to do and then try to surround themselves with people who do it better than them. “That’s what a mentor is, someone who has more knowledge than you in something you want to do, and is open to giving counsel in that direction.”20 Ryzor tells the story of the year they spent DJ-ing at a restaurant every Wednesday, Friday and Saturday night. “We’d bring the sound equipment and play for six hours and our only pay was food. But, we were always excited to go, because it wasn’t about the money.”

Early in 2007, they decided on the name Liquideep for their act and signed 25 to burgeoning label Bass Beats and Breaks Records. Their compilation Oscillations was one of four CDs on BBB Records’ debut collection, released in conjunction with House Afrika. Fairytale was, at the time, an unknown track on the compilation. However, it wasn’t long before the catchy tune caught the attention of several major radio stations.

30 Liquideep became a mainstay on high rotation playlists and Fairytale is up there besides Mandoza’s Nkalakatha in terms of its cross-over appeal. As industry unknowns, this was a major breakthrough. In order to capitalise on it, BBB Records urged Liquideep to lay down their first album in a hurry.

The duo had a huge catalogue of recorded tracks but every week the playlist35 would change. Eventually the deadline was looming over their heads. Ryzor reflects: “There are musicians and there is the business of music, and the two can’t live without each other.” He says they were under so much pres- sure to finish the album that he had to switch off his phone for four days.

The result was the long awaited Fabrics of the Heart, an album that merged Ziyon’s musicality and Ryzor’s knowledge of local house. Within a few months it had gone platinum, selling over 100,000 records. Long after the fuss about Fairytale died down, Liquideep are still much in demand.

TEXT 2

Die Antwoord: Zef or just Dof?

When South Africans hear the name Die Antwoord, some shudder while others rejoice. Milan Naran explores the maverick musos’ new release, $O$.

1 Die Antwoord has captivated the youth market and the independent music scene around the world with their fresh yet controversial take on music. Their latest release, $O$, is a testament to their talent: they are mad, ferocious, and on message even when they claim to detest preaching in their songwriting.

5 The band is working in a no-genre space while riding the hip-hop beast as the back- beat to their issues-infested lyrics, bleated and bled out at 100 vowels per second. Their music is a hip-hop inspired rubik’s cube of kwaito-type lyrics – kicked in with a vulgarish slang of English and Afrikaans. The 10-track album sees Ninja and Yolandi demonstrate how the combination of English and Afrikaans creates an 10 infectious and unique rhythm.

Unwittingly, the combination illustrates the journey this country has walked during

16 years of democracy. The first track hits back at all the artists out there that have dissed the group, swiftly followed by the international hit single, Enter the Ninja. The tracks flow together like a story. Rich B***H is, in fact, a short tale about 15 Yolandi.

The brilliant lyrical content reaffirms the reasons Die Antwoord are riding the international wave right now. There is a little surprise on the only new track, Evil Boy, featuring Wanga. The track combines English, Afrikaans and Xhosa.

Ninja has had a long run in the hip-hop industry, and on Beat Boy he reminds fans20 as “Yang Weapon”, or Waddy, of Max Normal fame. When asked about their inspiration, the duo reveal that their own life experiences are the source of the album.

SECTION BSUMMARY WRITINGQUESTION 2

Read the text below and answer the question that follows:

Imagine that the following diary entries are from your diary. Read what has been written and answer the question below.

Monday 7 JanuaryI was very nervous about starting at a new school but things went really well. The staff – the security guard at the gate, the school secretary, the teachers and even the principal are so friendly. I felt a bit lost at first because I couldn’t find anything. The laboratory, the library, the hall and the classrooms – they have so many wonderful facilities! I had more classes today than yesterday and most of the teachers are really cool. The Travel and Tourism teacher looks strict but we’ll see. I look forward to the two-week tour to Mozambique that he is taking us on – it seems as if staff members organise all kinds of trips.

Tuesday 8 JanuaryI am proud to be part of a school that is tops in every kind of sport. They have sports that never thought I would do, like hockey and basketball. There are so many kinds, that I don’t know what to choose. It’s so exciting.

I have found a good friend whom I met on the school bus. She really is fun. I think Angie will like her. I am really impressed by the school transport. They have their own buses to transport learners. Transport was always such a drag at my former school.

If you wanted to write a postcard to a friend to tell him/her about your new school, you

would have to give a summary of what you wrote in your diary.

INSTRUCTIONS:

Write down SEVEN main ideas in seven separate sentences.

Mention one fact per sentence.

Each sentence may not consist of more than TEN words.

Number each main idea.

Indicate the total number of words of the seven sentences together.

Imperative Instruction

1 November last year saw the Kwazulu Natal Education Department release some concerning statistics: only 23% of pupils entering the country’s schooling system manage to pass Matric. Some learners look at dropping-out of school as a way of dealing with their problems. Although this may seem helpful, leaving school before5 you’ve matriculated will have a negative impact on your future.

By example, unemployment in Mzansi is estimated at 40%. It makes sense that continuing your education makes you less likely to become one of the almost 19 million unemployed citizens of the country. As to why learners are dropping out, there are a number of reasons and 10 speculations. The Gender Parity Index (GPI) says although teenage pregnancy is often quoted as one of the main reasons for high school dropouts, data suggests that it’s not the primary course – though it may be significant for girls.

Not having enough money for school fees and uniforms is a problem. But you cannot let it get you down. Provisions have been made in the form of social grants15 to address the situation.

TEXT D

1 It is titled Memoirs and that’s truly what’s been delivered. Mariah has outdone her- self by bringing back her original flavor in this album, unlike her previous release Emancipation of Mimi, which missed the mark.

Every song on Memoirs tells a peace of a love story – start with heartbreak, then 5 the emotion battle broken-hearted lovers face, till the end where she has made the choice to open her heart and finally feel love once again. One of the most exceptional songs on this album is the cover of I want to know what love is, originally done by rock band, Foreigner. I must say that Mariah Carey has not disappointed with her version of the song. An absolutely brilliant album. –Milan
