How to multiply two binomials together?
BINOMIAL MULTIPLICATION
If you had to multiply two binomials together such as (a+b) and (c+d), how would you keep track of the resulting products to make sure that you have multiplied everything and not left anything out. Think of FOIL First, Outer, Inner, Last (a+b)*(c+d) = ac(first) + ad(outer) + bc(inner) +bd(last) Factoring a Trinomial with a Lead Coefficient
The "3R" Method:
1. "R"emove the lead coefficient, but don't throw it away. Multiply the constant with the lead coefficent.
2. Factor the remaining trinomial 3. 3. "R"eplace the lead coefficent you removed. Put it in front of both x's. 4. 4. "R"educe! Reduce the numbers in each set of parenthesis, as you would a fraction, to lowest
terms. 5. 5. Optional - use the FOIL method to check and see that I am right.
*note: if the three numbers in the trinomial have a common factor it must be factored out in the beginning for the "3R" method to work. Mnemonic device

Solving absolute value inequalities
When solving absolute value inequalities: if the absolute value is greater than a number you must use the conjunction OR, when the absolute value is less than a number you must use the conjunction AND. To remember this just remember two words "GOR"-"LAND," which translate into "G(greater)OR" and"L(less than)AND". When I introduce this topic I tell students that we are about to enter "GOR-LAND." (no political implications intended)

NO GAINS ON SACRIFICE Explanation NO GAINS ON SACRIFICE Is a Mnemonic to remember a Formula for Gain Ratio and Sacrifice RatioGain Ratio = New Ratio - Old RatioSacrifice Ratio = Old Ratio - New RatioThis Slogan or Proverb is applicable for all Parents who sacrifice for their Children without expecting any Gains for their sacrifices. This Formula is usefull in application of Profit Sharing Ratio in case of a partnership firm.In case a new partner is admitted into the Business then the old profit sharing is no longer valid and a new profit sharing ratio is required. Besides Bringing capital into the business the new partner is also supposed to bring some additional funds as gift for the old partners. This gift is called as Goodwill. So when the New Partner brings Goodwill Amount into the business this amount is supposed to be distributed to the old partners in Sacrifice Ratio. The Formula for Sacrifice Ratio BeingOld Ratio - New Ratio Similarly when any partners retires from Partnership Firm the Outgoing partner is supposed to get his share in the Goodwill of the partnership firm. In this case the Remaining partner [those who continue to be in Business and do not retire] are supposed to Contribute for Goodwill for the retiring partner. This Contribution is in Gain Ratio whihc is calculated as followsNew Ratio - Old Ratio Several Mnemonics for Equation Solving
Greg Smith: I use many SMATHism 's in class.
Here are several:
In equation solving, I emphasize that we always do "things" in pairs to maintain equality in mathematices.
In equation solving, I emphasize that we need only perform one opposite to "get rid of" something
.
For equation solving when we want to undo something, we use B. S. well actually double B. S. to
determine where to perform the operation the Back Side of Both Sides of the equation, or the Bottom
Side of Both Sides of the equation.

Tangent = Opposite leg divided by the Adjacent leg Many secondary school students remember the basic trigonometric functions with the phrase SOH-CAH-TOA (pronounced "soak a toe-uh"). SOH ... Sine = Opposite leg divided by the Hypotenuse

CAH ... Cosine = Adjacent leg divided by the Hypotenuse TOA ... Tangent = Opposite leg divided by the Adjacent leg
The sine, cosine, and tangent ratios in a right triangle can be remembered by representing them as
strings of letters, as in SOH-CAH-TOA:
Sine = Opposite ÷ Hypotenuse
Cosine = Adjacent ÷ Hypotenuse
Tangent = Opposite ÷ Adjacent
Also used is its reverse, OHSAHCOAT (pronounced oh-sah-coat). It is interpreted as OHS-AHC-OAT, as
shown below.
Opposite ÷ Hypotenuse = Sine
Adjacent ÷ Hypotenuse = Cosine
Opposite ÷ Adjacent = Tangent
One way to remember the letters is to sound them out phonetically (i.e. "SOHCAHTOA").[12]
Another
method is to expand the letters into a phrase, such as
"Some Old Horses Chew Apples Happily Throughout Old Age"
Or, as popularized at Cincinnati's St. Xavier High School, they use the simple phrase Sally Can Tell : Oscar Has A Hard On Always. (It's been theorized that mnemonic devices that reference
strong emotions, such as sexual feelings, imprint a stronger memory. However "Hat On" works equally well, but seems to be less memorable.)
Oscar Had A Heap Of Apples also works if you can remember the sine, cosine, tangent order.
"One Hopes, And Hopes, On America" was widely taught to British schoolchildren during World
War II (the sine-cosine-tangent order was presumed). Not only was it a good mnemonic, it also served to reassure the children that Great Britain was not doomed to Nazi annihilation.
You can also remember the basic trigonometric functions with the phrase "Some Old Hippie, Caught Another Old hippie, Tripping On Acid"
For remembering the sign of trig functions in the quadrants:

Sine? Cosine? Tangent?
1) An easy way to remember these relationships for trig functions and the right triangle. Just write down
this mnemonic:
SOH - CAH - TOA
It is pronounced "so - ka - toe - ah".
The SOH stands for "Sine of an angle is Opposite over Hypotenuse."
The CAH stands for "Cosine of an angle is Adjacent over Hypotenuse."
The TOA stands for "Tangent of an angle is Opposite over Adjacent."
Thanks Bob H.
2) Opposite /(over) Adjacent = Tan Opposite /(over) Hypotenuse = Sine
Adjacent /(over) Hypotenuse = Cosine

Calculus
For remembering the order of taking the derivative of a quotient in calculus, the phrase "ho-di-hi,
hi-di-ho, ho-ho" can be useful, where ho means the bottom, hi means the top, and di means the
derivative. So,
Another phrase that one may use is: "Bottom d Top, Top d bottom", where "d" stands for
derivative (note that this mnemonic does not include the crucial dividing by the bottom squared).
Another phrase memorable for sounding like a square dance is "low d high less high d low, draw the
line and square below."

MEAN means the Average.MODE is the Most frequent.MEDIAN is the middle in a numerically ordered set of data.Range is all #'s that are located on the number line between the highest & lowest data. Explanation Mean - Add all data & use this sum as your dividend when you divide by the total number of data in the set.Mode- There is NO MODE UNLESS one and only one number appears more than any other number in the data set!Median - There will be two ordinal numbers in the middle of an even set of data. Find the mean / average. This quotient may be a decimal number but there can be ONLY ONE MEDIAN NUMBER!Range - Simply subtract the lowest data # from the highest data #. Note: You usually do not include the extremes unless you are asked to give the range of prices. Ex. Dresses are - $48, $50. $77. $98. In this case, the range of prices is from $48.00 to $98.00 and does include the two extremes. Remembering the methods of finding averages
Four methods of finding averages… Mode - is the number (or numbers) that appears most frequently in a set. Median - is the number exactly in the middle when a set of numbers is listed in order. Mean - is the sum of a set of numbers, divided by the number of numbers in the set. Range - is the difference between the highest and lowest numbers in a set. Here is the way to remember these four methods of finding averages… Medium-Range Mean Model

Computer Principles
Mnemonics in computer science tend to be less pervasive as most abbreviations are brief. Some terms still warrant a mnemonic such as People Can't Memorize Computer Industry Acronyms (PCMCIA)
PCMCIA:President Clinton Makes Cornbread In Arkansas Through the 1990s, whenever I heard about ISDN, I always thought "It Still Does Nothing." It's because the standard documents for ISDN came out around 10 years before you could actually buy any product. When Broadband ISDN came out (B-ISDN) there was around 3 years between standard and product, and we knew that as "But It Still Does Nothing". Explanation In Linux, pressing Ctrl+Alt+SysRq (Print Screen, on modern keyboards), releasing SysRq, and, still holding Alt, pressing R E I S U B in that order (with a slight pause between each) will reboot even the most stubbornly frozen system. This works because R E I S U B are the magic SysRq keys that correspond to: resetting the keyboard state, sending SIGTERM to all processes, sending SIGKILL to all running processes, synchronizing all filesystems, unmounting all filesystems, and rebooting.

Raising Skinny Elephants Is Utterly Boring
"Raising Skinny Elephants Is Utterly Boring" is a mnemonic device for remembering a particularly
important keystroke sequence in Linux. In the event of a total system freeze up, this is the failsafe way to
safely reboot a near-frozen computer.
Usage
The first two key sequences to deal with a frozen machine are:
Alt + Ctrl + to enter a command prompt. Normally the function keys F1 to F6 can be used.
Control-Alt-Delete. This performs a regular shutdown, if possible, which allows running services to shut
down normally.
Using 'RSEIUB' follows these two steps as a last resort. The squence is performed as follows: While
holding Alt and SysRq, press they keys R, S, E, I, U, and then B, in sequence, leaving some time
between keystrokes.
Meaning
R places the keyboard in raw mode
S synchronizes the disk
E terminates all processes
I kills all processes
U remounts all filesystems read-only

"sticky paint dries fast" For the energy levels of electrons.
I have a relatively good one (albeit fairly useless) for remembering the order that the nuclear shells get filled up as you add more nucleons to the nucleus: spuds if pug dish of pig
If you write it down and then cross out all of the vowels except for the final 'i' you get spdsfpgdshfpig
and since you are worying about nuclear levels, you already know the spectroscopic notation: spdfghi s=0, p=1, ... so if you start numbering above these letters how many times the letter has occured, you get the principal quantum number, and angular momentum of the energy states in the order that they are filled:
11121212312312 spdsfpgdshfpig
(Remember that in nuclear shells the angular momentum can be greater than the principal quantum number...)

Hardness The relative hardness of minerals is determined according to Mohs Scale, named after the German mineralogist,Friedrich Mohs, who devised it in 1812. In the original Mohs Scale, ten minerals were arranged in order of increasing hardness and were assigned the numbers one to ten. These ten minerals are shown in the first column of the table below:
Mohs Substance Mohs Number Common Substance Simple Classification
Talc 1
SOFT Gypsum 2
2.5 Fingernail
Calcite 3
MEDIUM Fluorite 4 'Copper' coin 1
Apatite 5
5.5 Knife blade or glass
Orthoclase (feldspar) 6
HARD
6.5 Steel file
Quartz 7
Topaz 8
Corundum (emery) 9
Diamond 10
A substance with a higher Mohs number is capable of scratching a substance with a lower number. The order of these minerals can be remembered using the mnemonic: The Girls Can Flirt And Other Queer ThingsCan Do .

A mnemonic for remembering the number of days in the months of the year, practically a cultural universal in the United States, is "Thirty days hath September/April, June and November." (Although this is only part of a longer rhyme, this is the only part that most people remember, so they commonly complete it with words similar to "... except February, which has twenty-eight, or twenty-nine in a leap year." The full mnemonic is "Thirty days hath September/April, June and November/All the rest have thirty-one/except February alone/which has eight and a score/until leap year gives it one day more.")
Another mnemonic for the days of the months is not a rhyme or a jingle, but a gestalt. Whereas the traditional mnemonic simply associates the name of the month with the number of days, this one emphasizes the sequence. The 31 and less-than-31-day months would be easy to remember if they simply alternated, but the pattern of month lengths is not that simple. They alternate until the fourth 31-day month, July, which is immediately followed by another 31-day month. Since the human hand has four fingers, one can, given an appropriate mind-set, perceive this pattern in a view of the knuckles of two fists, held together. The raised knuckles can be seen as the 31-day months, the dips between them as the 30-day-months-and-February, and the gap between the hands ignored. (Thus: left-hand-pinky-knuckle = January, dip = February, left-hand-ring-knuckle = March, dip = April, and so on to left-hand-index-knuckle = July; then continue with right-hand-index-knuckle = August, dip = September, etc).

SMART is a mnemonic used in project management at the project objective setting stage. It is a way of evaluating if the objectives that are being set are appropriate for the individual project. A SMART objective is one that is: Specific ( the goal and methods are clearly defined) Measurable ( the objectives are measured numerically) Achievable ( humanly possible, and the project has all the required resources) Relevant ( avoid the temptation of defining a goal just because it fits nicely to the previous three criteria) Time framed (set deadlines)
There is no clear consensus about precisely what the 5 keywords mean, or even what they are. Sometimes Realistic or Result or Results-Oriented or Resourced (Favell, 2004) is seen in place of Relevant, or Appropriate or Action in seen in place of Achievable. The SMART criteria are guidelines suggesting that milestones should be: Specific Measurable Assignable Realistic Time framed

This is an acrostic for memorising the planets and the dwarf planets: Murky conVention's Efforts Mar *Series; Jury Set yoUr Next *Planet *Chart *Abridged. Explanation Explanation borrowed from http://www.nakedscience.com/articles/single%20digit%20acrostics.htm Taking the first prominent letter of each word of that sentence: M=Mercury [Murky], V=Venus [conVention], E=Earth [Efforts], M=Mars, 'Series' sounds like Ceres; J=Jupiter, S=Saturn, U=Uranus, N=Neptune, P=Pluto, Ch=Charon, Ab sounds like UB... [an astronomical prefix for the next big body in space] [I used an asterisk in places to emphasise the dwarf planets' words.] In 2006, a committee of astronomers elected that Pluto should not be classified as a planet. They considered how there are dwarf planets such as dwarf planet UB313 also known as Eris; and Pluto has certain similarities with that 'dwarf planet' classification rather than 'planet' classification. My acrostic sentence tries to mention the context of how the list of planets became what it currently is. Sentences to Remember the Order of the Planets

"Neptune's tiny dancing girls look pretty to-night" Earth’s Moon Shape "DOC" represents phases of the Moon by shape: "D" is the waxing moon; "O" the full moon; and "C" the waning moon. In the Southern hemisphere, this is reversed, and the mnemonic is "COD". A French mnemonic is that the waxing moon at its first "premier" quarter phase looks like a 'p', and the waning moon at its last "dernier" quarter looks like a 'd'. In German, the Moon is compared to a handwritten small letter a for "Abnehmen" (waning) and a z for "Zunehmen" (waxing). One more (Northern hemisphere) mnemonic, which works for most Romance languages, says that the Moon is a liar: it spells "C", as in crescere (Italian for "to grow") when it wanes, and "D" as in decrescere ("decrease") when it waxes. Stellar Classification
Stellar classification uses a peculiar group of letters, easily remembered using the phrase, "Oh Be A Fine Girl, Kiss Me Right Now Sweetie." Stars are classified as O, B, A, F, G, K, M, and sometimes R, N, S, C, L and T depending on their size and composition. The classifications R, N, S and C are given to stars with high carbon content and L and T are given to stars that are so small they do not generate enough heat to begin nuclear fusion. These "unusual" classifications are usually not included in mnemonics. Also: Oh Be A Fine Girl, Kiss Me Right Now Sweetie. Stars
Here are some mnemonics to aid you in memorizing the stellar classification system for stars, OBAFGKM which lists stars from hottest (most blue) to coolest (most red). The most famous mnemonic for this is due to astronomer Henry Norris Russell, it goes Oh Be A Fine Girl (Guy), Kiss Me Here are some modern variations which you might find more memorable: (the first is from our Arny textbook)

Update: Astronomers have recently added two new letters to the stellar classification system, L and T. Mostly these letters cover brown dwarf "stars" although part of the L classification also includes some very low mass red dwarf stars. A couple suggestions I've received for the new OBAFGKMLT mnemonic are: Oh Be A Fine Girl, Kiss My Lips Tenderly* Oh Be A Fine Girl, Kiss Me Like This*

RF Spectrum Mnemonic with Radio Propagation
The letters with the green highlights are the 1st letters of the different ITU RF designations. (Ref: Page 17, Tomasi). In order for easy recalling of the different bands simply use this mnemonic : Every Very Very Loving Mom Has Very Ugly Son Except I. * Please take note that Voice Comes First before VLF* Now In order for you to know the frequency just remember this Mnemonic: VHS at 3:30, kasi Ma Galing.
*Take note that the V in there stands fot Very Low Frequency, the kasi Ma Galing corresponds to the frequency in kilohertz, megahertz and gigahertz respectively. The 3:30 signifies the frequency range for these three. Moving on, We will proceed to Wave Propagation Topic and its relationship with the spectrum. In order for you to easily recall what wave describes what, simply familiarize yourself with the illustration and the apply this Mnemonic: My Kilikili Has D Most Decent C Mill. And then as a final note: Just Remember SKY is High Frequeny, Frequencies below Sky are Ground and above the Sky is Space.

Telephony And lastly, I've had to learn the U.S. Telephone companies' supposed standard for multiple-pair telephone cables - up to twenty-five pairs in one cable. It's based on a '5 and 5' scheme; 5 base colors, 5 trace colors, designating the 'Tip' and 'Ring' of each pair; First the Base color is used as the wire insulation, with all the trace or stripe colors in their sequence, then the next base color is used, and the traces are repeated. I'll try to do this; "We Rape Beautiful Young Virgins, But Only Girls Beyond Sixteen" This transposes to "White Red Black Yellow Violet" and "Blue Orange Green Brown Slate" In a multipair cable, the first wire in the first pair is White, Blue tracer (called WH/BL) then the second wire is Blue with White tracer (BL/WH). Next pair is White/Orange and Orange/White, next is White/Green and Green/White, next White/Brown and Brown/White, and finally White/Slate and Slate/White. This takes care of 5 pairs; the next 5 are Red with tracers Blue thru Slate, then 5 pairs of Black with tracers Blue thru Slate. Pair 24 would thus end up as Violet/Brown//Brown/Violet, and pair 25 would be Violet/Slate//Slate/Violet. Mnemonic device

Rainbow Color: The name Roy G. Biv helps us to remember the order of the colors in the spectrum. In England "Richard Of York Gave Battle In Vain" is popular (Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Indigo, Violet). In an alternate
version, "Battle" is replaced with "Birth". It is interesting to note that many modern scientists no longer consider Indigo to be a part of the rainbow.
