2016-2017 SIEDC CHAIR

Seneca County is an economic development success story.

For the last five years in a row, we have been nationally ranked (top 20%) among counties our size. For four of them, we’ve been in the top 10%. In the last four years alone, more than 200 projects have helped create 1,500 new jobs and generate $250 million in new investment. More than 50 new businesses have started up or located here, and last year we were recognized as one of the top ten cities for entrepreneurship in the Midwest. Unemployment is below state and national levels, crime has been cut by 70 percent, and per capita income is on the rise.

This is no accident, and the Seneca Industrial and Economic Development Corp. (SIEDC) has been a major reason why. I know from personal experience the difference they can make. In 2014, when Webster Industries was looking at Mississippi, Alabama, and Tiffin for its next expansion, SIEDC worked tirelessly for months with us and local, regional, and state officials to marshal the necessary resources to keep our community competitive. We have since completed the $8.3 million investment and added 38,000 square feet to our facility.

And my experience is not unique. Talk to the more than 70 members of SIEDC and hundreds of businesses in Tiffin and throughout Seneca County and you will discover story after story of how SIEDC is facilitating commercial and industrial projects, leading downtown revitalization, spurring entrepreneurship, promoting our community, and creating a better quality of life.

So, please join us and become a member today. We need your help as we look to continue to fuel our success for the next five years and beyond. Your contribution will make a difference and continue to fuel our collective success.

Thank you,

MAKING A DIFFERENCE...

Amy took over leadership of Tiffin’s downtown revitalization efforts in June 2014, after working for the Toledo-based architecture and engineering firm SSOE as well as serving as Exective Director for Leadership Seneca County. She has her degree from Kent State and also taught for the University of Toledo.

Because of her efforts, Tiffin was accepted into the Ohio Main Street program, more than 20 businesses have located or invested into the downtown, and more than 37 investment projects have taken place, with $1.1 million invested.

Bryce joined SIEDC in March 2015 and manages a majority of our economic and community development projects on a daily basis. He also spearheads many of our events, oversees the Membership & Events Committee, and also assists with downtown revitalization efforts. He is a graduate of Heidelberg University’s School of Business and is on the board of Seneca County Young Professionals.

Bryce’s most recent successes include the $2.5 million Church & Dwight expansion and the $9 million Tiffin Pointe development.

Katie joined SIEDC in March of 2015 and heads our public relations, social media, and internal communications functions. She also facilitates the Sandusky County-Seneca County-City of Tiffin Port Authority and handles a variety of other mission critical functions. She has her degree in journalism from Ohio University and has worked for the Advertiser-Tribune, Webster Industries, the National Association of College Stores, and Limited Brands.

Since the beginning of last year, our website registered 65,000 visitors, and our social media reached 450,000 people.

MANUFACTURING & LOGISTICS SIEDC’s articles of incorporation state

that its first purpose is promoting “industrial” retention and growth within Seneca County, Ohio.

This means our first job is helping our more than 400 industrial companies (manufacturing, logistics, wholesale, industrial service, construction) get the resources they need to grow - incentives, financing, talent, real property, infrastructure, research, consulting. It also means creating an environment attractive to other industrial companies.

DOWNTOWN & RETAIL SIEDC’s articles state that its second

purpose is promoting “commercial” retention and growth, and it leads downtown revitalization since 2014 and the integration of Tiffin Tommorrow.

Accordingly, we work to assist and attract retail, service, hospitality, and other businesses throughout Tiffin and Seneca County, as well as implement a Main Street approach to the downtown.

QUALITY OF LIFE The third purpose SIEDC’s legal

documents point to is community development and “developing affordable housing,” critical for a high quality of life.

SIEDC will continue to be the lead community development agent for the City of Tiffin and an important leader, manager and facilitator of projects and grants that improve the lives of citizens throughout Seneca County.

Manufacturing is the largest industry (25%

of workforce) and typically the largest

capital investor ($57 million in 2015, $42

million in 2014).

>> SIEDC’S STRATEGY

More than 30 new retail businesses have opened or

located downtown, in the West Market

commercial corridor, in the university

districts, and in other areas of Tiffin and

Seneca County in the last three years alone.

SIEDC administers the City’s Community

Development Block Grant (CDBG)

program and has brought in more than $10 million in grant funding

in the last decade towards community

development projects.

<< CAMPAIGN GOALS The table below is based on information from a

2014 SIEDC survey of 11 area economic development organizations, as well as this year’s budget.

SIEDC’s 2014-2015 Success Drive campaign was successful in raising the amount of private donations from 25% of our budget to 38% of our operating budget. The remainder is public sector (48%), contract for services (4%), and other (9%). The public sector also significantly increased its funding commitment during the campaign.

We sincerely appreciate everyone’s contributions. We currently have 40 members and several other private individuals and organizations who provide support to us as well.

SIEDC does not hire professional fundraisers but saves those costs and does it themselves. The long-term goal is to increase our private fundraising to a competitive $200,000 by 2020.
