Welcome to the second edition of the BCEA Member Directory. We appreciate your feedback from our 90th anniversary edition, and based on the results, we will publish this book annually.
As mentioned at our annual general meeting in July, the last year has seen your leadership team focused on building a stronger foundation and direction for the future of the British Columbia Electrical Association (BCEA) and its members. The BCEA took time to research the needs of our members and our industry. Based on the outcome, the BCEA board put together a strong strategic plan to be carried out over the next two to three years.
The strongest foundation of any association is its members. The membership committee will be focusing on membership growth, retention, and a deliverable value proposal. Members who are involved have seen the value the BCEA brings to their organizations. An important goal for this group is to get members engaged in the areas they are passionate about (education, networking, marketing, etc.).
For years the BCEA has raised money, not only for our scholarship and bursary program, but also for local charities around B.C., such as the Empty Stocking Fund and Canuck Place. Our members have been generous and supportive over the years, and the board would like to take this a step further by getting more involved in the community. Millennials are naturally very socially responsible beings – they want to be part of a greater good. In 2016, the BCEA will participate in the Easter Seals 24-Hour Camp Challenge. Join Team BCEA and be a part of this great event on June 11-12, 2016. We are building a team of BCEA members that will help raise $30,000 by the end of May 2016. This will provide members with an opportunity to get involved and network, while doing something for a greater good. Call our office for more details or visit our website to join the team.
Education continues to be a big part of our 20/20 vision as the BCEA provide learning opportunities for our membership and our industry. When speaking to our industry leaders and reviewing the responses from our membership survey, it is evident that education is a key component in the growth of our membership and industry. It is not only important for the upcoming generations, but for everyone who wants to grow their knowledge in new technologies, and changing legislation and regulations. The education committee has a lot of work ahead of them. We encourage anyone who is interested in participating on that committee to contact the BCEA.

For those who have not met me, my name is Kelly Hewson and I am a key ac-count representative for FortisBC Inc. (Electric), and I deliver the FortisBC energy efficiency programs.
I started out my electrical career as an electroplater for a family business in Penticton, B.C. After taking a keen interest in energy efficiency, I joined a group promoting the R-2000 program and attended courses with Manitoba Hydro, which introduced me to electrical efficiencies. From there, FortisBC, which was then known as West Kootenay Power, hired me and I have been with the company for 27 years.
I was temporarily appointed to the BCEA board in 2006 as a short-term re-placement for my predecessor. After a few successful projects, I was granted permission to become a full-time board member. Not long after starting with the board, we put together a group of manufacturers and wholesalers from the Okanagan and started a new committee in Kelowna for the BCEA.
I have been incredibly lucky with this group, and all the time they have vol-unteered to help make some very successful events. We have now had five Okanagan golf tournaments, of which all the profit goes to the Okanagan bursary program for students entering the electrical, electrical engineer-ing, or marketing programs. The BCEA, in partnership with FortisBC and BC Hydro, has been able to host some amazing education programs for local electrical and electrical design groups in Kelowna.
The local committee has had some great brainstorming sessions in the last few months to find different ways to keep our Okanagan community con-nected. Aside from our educational workshops, one of the events being con-sidered is a fishing derby. By holding it at a strategically situated location, we hope to encourage all BCEA members from around British Columbia to attend, giving everyone the opportunity to meet and network.
One of my goals this year as chair includes increasing our outreach and education programming throughout the Okanagan and went toward the Boundary Kootenay area. Because of its distance from the Okanagan and the Lower Mainland, the Boundary Kootenay area has not had many oppor-tunities to receive electrical courses, new product training, or technology seminars.
Working with our president and CEO, Barbette Ishii and the board of di-rectors, I would like to continue the great strides we have already made in increasing our membership and working closer with related associations in our industry.
I would like to thank our president & CEO, Barbette Ishii and her team, ex-ecutive assistant, Alicia Penny and administrative assistant Nazan Korkut, for their expertise and dedication not only to the board and members, but to the industry as a whole. To the current and past board of directors, I am humbled by your knowledge and experience and, mostly, your willingness to share. v

With the 2015 BCEA strategic planning session behind us, the membership com-mittee has been given a lot of opportunities to move ahead for the upcoming years.
I am excited to work with the BCEA members to help get as much value and sup-port as possible from this excellent organization. At this time, we would like to highlight some of the goals the membership committee will be working towards.
One of our goals is to help create more awareness during our events. We want to communicate what your membership benefits are, and how we plan to continue working toward ongoing benefits, such as our preferred suppliers program. In the upcoming years, we are trying to increase our membership by aligning with similar associations, such as the Canadian Home Builders’ Association, the Me-chanical Contractors Association of B.C., and the Electrical Contractors Associa-tion of B.C.
We have developed, and are continuing to develop, a fantastic assortment of training sessions from basic electricity to more segmented courses, such as light-ing, marketing, sales, and distribution. These training sessions are held through-out the Lower Mainland, the Interior and on Vancouver Island.
Part of our plan is to reach out to the industry and work with our members on employee retention and recruitment. Our youth is our future, and with the U40 committee, we have seen new members coming on board, and the diversity is excellent! This industry offers a range of careers and we want to continue adding valuable educated employees.
Over the last few years, we have been working alongside the marketing commit-tee to create awareness among our members about the wide range of member-ship benefits, and promote the value of the BCEA to their companies and to each individual.
Our team is meeting on a regular basis, and we would love to receive feedback from you – our members – so we can continue to improve and deliver value to all facets of the industry. Stay connected and get involved! v

ighting has changed in the last 10 years, transitioning from a rela-tively stable industry to one dominated by innovation. While LED has become the preferred source for new installa-tions, it is not the only suitable source. Plasma and induction are the most commonly seen alternatives to exist-ing incandescent, fluorescent, and HID sources.
Light sources are typically classified as either point source, or linear. Point source lighting, such as incandescent filaments, LED’s, and HID arc tubes, provides light over a small area of space. It gives more control over the lighting and is more efficient (decreased losses by light reflected back into the source). Linear source lighting, such as fluores-cent tubes, provides light over a large area of space and reduces glare.
In the ‘90s, sulphur lamps were touted as the next big thing in lighting. In conjunction with light pipes, they were used at the National Air and Space Museum in the Washington, DC. This technology developed into Light Emit-ting Plasma (LEP), which is available now and is in direct competition with LED technology.
LEP uses a radio frequency genera-tor that excites the plasma to produce light. It is a point source, which allows

for high-luminaire efficiencies and optical control, and has most recently been used as a potential upgrade for high-mast lighting. The spectrum of light produced by LEP is similar to natural sunlight, and has a natural look that differs from high-pressure sodium. The major barriers to widespread adop-tion of LEP are the lumens per watt (LPW), which are similar to that of HID (between 80 - 90 LPW), and it has a lifespan of 50,000 hours. That’s 25 per cent less efficient than new LED instal-lations and half the lifespan. Aesthet-ics, rather than economics, will be the driving factor behind LEP installations.
Induction is the most familiar alter-native to LED and has been installed throughout the province. It is similar to LEP technology in that a RF generator is used rather than a ballast. It is simi-lar to fluorescent in that the generator excites low-pressure mercury vapour to create UV light that is then converted to visible light by phosphors inside the lamp. One of the benefits of induction is that it is a large source, which mini-mizes glare for the same output as a point source. The downside to a large source is that optical control is limited with induction.
For areas where glare is an issue, induc-tion provides a comfortable source of light that has a natural feel. Applica-tions in parkades, pools, and parking lots, where optical control is not a prior-ity, can make an induction installation effective. LED that is properly designed can exceed the life of induction and will likely be more efficient and economical than induction. It is also less expensive to install than induction.
Organic LED, or OLED, is a source that is still in its infancy but will likely be-come more common. OLED is thin, flexible, and can be manufactured in different shapes, making it possible for luminaire manufacturers to offer inno-vative designs that are impossible with other sources. Currently, OLED sources
are large relative to their lumen out-
put, leading to minimized glare and
limited optical control. OLED can offer
designers and architects the ability to
incorporate light into their design for
decorative purposes, while using other
technology as the main light source in
a space.
One of the main reasons LED has over-
taken other emerging technologies is
the focus on economics, such as main-
tenance and energy efficiency. By focus-
ing on the cost at the expense of visual
performance, the source chosen may not
suit the space and it may be uncomfort-
able for those occupying the space. LED
may be more economical, but it’s not al-
ways the best choice, and it’s definitely
not the only choice on the market.
