MissionThe Montana Nursery & Landscape Association (MNLA) is a leader in the outdoor living industry. MNLA helps members succeed and adapt through advocacy, community interaction, events, education, and personal development.

Adopted by the MNLA Board of Directors on February, 23, 2017

History of the Montana Nursery & Landscape AssociationThe Montana Nursery and Landscape Association was formed in 1954 by a group of professionals who shared similar concerns and interests in the emerging industry of horticulture. In the years that followed, the industry in Montana grew, and so did MNLA. We now represent nursery stock growers, retailers, landscape contractors, garden center owners, irrigation contractors, landscape architects, allied industries and associated industry individuals within—and outside—the state of Montana.

There are a growing number of benefits of belonging to MNLA, including legislative and regulatory representation; high-quality continuing education through seminars, publications, and certification; referrals; and numerous networking opportunities.

MNLA – Promoting Your Industry • Increasing Your Voice • Growing Your Business

Association Position on Nursery Sales PracticesThe Montana Nursery & Landscape Association (MNLA), is dedicated to belief in and support of members’ efforts to distinguish themselves as plant experts in the horticultural industry. The sale of suitable, quality plant material and the provision of horticultural education and expertise by MNLA members to the public are essential to the industry’s success and longevity. Nursery sales practices and conditions that do not foster consumer confidence and success are harmful to the industry and considered unethical by the Association.

Passed by the MNLA Board of Directors August 22, 2002 at a meeting held in Red Lodge, Montana.

RationaleMNLA encourages member firms to adopt the concept of “the Right Plant for the Right Place” and to provide customers with the information and education needed to install and maintain healthy plants in appropriate landscapes. We realize that occasionally customers can not be dissuaded from plant materials that may not be appropriate for the intended location and that clients may not always be receptive to outside expertise. But, whenver possible, we encourage members to engage in sales practices that maximize customer satisfaction and plant success. Sales practices and conditions that foster failure reflect poorly on the firm that engages in them and erodes consumer confidence in the industry. The following are just a few of the good nursery practices the MNLA encourages:

• Guarantees of plant materials• Quality plant stock from hardy sources• Instructions or tags which identify plant hardiness and special needs• Promotion of disease resistant cultivars• Sales of bareroot plant materials before they break bud

Letter from the President

4

As the 2019 season comes to a close, it’s important to reflect on the past year of hard work and start to plan for the next. For many of us, it was a shorter season than normal due to a late spring and an abbreviated fall. We can be thankful that our summer, while it felt short, was never too hot or smoky. Still, we shouldn’t wait for a summer of heat and smoke to ask how our industry will need to adapt to a changing climate.

Due to a good economy and a lot of construction across the state, the green industry continues to feel the effects of a perennial labor shortage. How do we retain good employees and attract a new generation to learn the trade? Most of our work force is in it because they love what they do: being outdoors, working with their hands, working with plants. The nature of seasonal work and the inability for many of our small businesses to provide health insurance and other benefits means that many potential employees turn to jobs that may be less fulfilling.

These are the big issues that MNLA can bring our industry together to work to address. The value of the association lies in a simple fact: we are stronger and more effective when we work together. Thank you for your membership and help us to become even stronger by encouraging your professional network to join the association.

The annual Green Expo is an opportunity to network, to learn and to discuss issues big and small. We will be back in Missoula for the January 2020 Expo. We’ve been on a Billings, Missoula rotation for a few years now, due to a current lack of venues that accommodate us. The two locations feel like two completely different events and I urge anyone who hasn’t been to a Missoula Expo to make the trip. 1st Vice President Ryan Forde and Member-at-Large Tim Groener have been working hard to plan a great lineup of speakers and a fun and diverse trade show.

Our other big event of the year is the Fall Tour. The 2019 Fall Tour was in Bozeman and I think I speak for everyone in attendance that it was quite impressive. The Golf Tournament, which has become a fun tradition at my company, couldn’t have been on a more beautiful day. The next day was packed with a variety of tours and inspiring projects. Seeing and learning from what others are doing was time well spent. Many thanks to Cashman Nursery, Blanchford Landscape Group, Gardening Under the Big Sky, Greater Gallatin Contractors, Kenyon Noble Lumber and Hardware, Leaning Tree Landscape Management, Linda Iverson Landscape Design, Montana State University and The Garden Barn for hosting us and planning some great tours. The 2020 Fall Tour is planned for the Flathead area.

I want to make a plug for another membership benefit. We recently instituted a ‘Short Course Study Scholarship’ available to all members and member organizations. Short courses may include, but are not limited to, the following: industry conferences and conventions, certification preparation courses, master gardener programs, and other relevant classes or programs offered by federal, state, or local government agencies. You can read more on our website at www.plantingmontana.com. Applications are available by emailing Jyl at [email protected] or from our website.

Many thanks to our dedicated board members and our amazing Executive Director, Jyl Story, for all that she does to keep the organization running smoothly. I’ll go ahead and say it again: we wouldn’t be where we are without her!

Another year is before us and I am so thankful for each and every member of the Montana Nursery & Landscape Association. I am always challenged by “what to write” in this column. You want something that is insightful, something interesting, something challenging, something motivational. I have pulled some comments from past articles that I think tell the story of MNLA and that were heartfelt and inspirational to me at the time I wrote them.

The Dictionary defines Grow as “become larger or greater over a period of time; increase”. I think that is a wonderful motto for MNLA. Over the years we have grown in good times and declined in harder times and are now growing again. We have become a greater organization over time. We will strive to continue to increase membership, increase the size of our trade show at the Montana Green Expo, increase our educational offerings throughout the year, and be an even better resource for our members. This is a big challenge but we have a dedicated Board of Directors and amazing and faithful members to continue the good work that those before us began.

“The businesses that stand out don’t just state “we are the best” or focus on their ROI. Rather, they tell a story that sparks a connection with prospects.” Story

telling is much of what MNLA is about. We provide the opportunities for our members to gather together at various events throughout the year to listen to and learn from each other as well as from event speakers or sponsors. Those stories help a new member in the industry just getting started to learn from their peers in the industry and make valuable connections. Those stories help all members with a new idea to try or avoid a stumbling block someone else encountered. Story telling provides great connections!

The Fall Tour, Montana Green Expo, Chapter Meetings and the golf tournaments are all great opportunities for growing, learning something new, storytelling, and cultivating new business relationships and opportunities. We had a wonderful Fall Tour this year in Bozeman and look forward to the upcoming Expo in Missoula. Come,

“Grow” with us, tell stories and be the motivator in the crowd.

Thank you for all you do and let’s keep telling stories and growing together!

Montana Green Expo MNLA holds the Montana Green Expo convention and trade show each year, in early January. The Association historically rotates between locations on the eastern and western sides of the continental divide to take advantage of two distinctly separate market areas. Typically it rotates between Missoula in the even years and Billings or points East in the odd years. The Expo includes two components: a Trade Show and a Convention. The Trade Show includes 75+ exhibitors and is free to attend. Attendance is open only to individuals who work in the horticulture industry. The Convention includes 10-20 hours of educational seminars, panel discussions, and

keynote presentations for which a registration fee is charged. Nationally recognized experts are invited to address a wide range of topics covering both horticulture and business management interests. MNLA members receive a substantial discount on registration fees for all conventions and seminars as well as discounts on the cost of booth space in the exhibit.

According to past Montana Green Expo attendees, the best part of the Expo is a feature that cannot be advertised and that is not even on the schedule. It is the opportunities for networking – getting together with old and new colleagues, sharing successes and failures. While the MNLA has tried to formalize these networking opportunities with events like the “Breakfast of Champions,” and panel discussions, much of the best networking happens in the hallways between seminars, in the aisles of the trade show, or during social events at the end of the day.

The Montana Green Expo is held during the first full week of January each year. If January 1st falls on Sunday, it is that week. If January 1st falls on a Monday through Saturday, it is the following week.

Fall TourEach year a fall tour provides an opportunity for practical industry learning in a relaxed and interesting environment. While the agenda changes each year, the Fall Tour generally features tours of interesting residential and commercial landscapes designed and installed by MNLA members.

The event also generally features tours of retail facilities and when poss ib le , g rower operations. In many cases, the designers and installers, owners and operators of the sites on the tour are available to answer questions and share technical and practical knowledge with tour participants. The event offers a great opportunity for both company owners/operators and employees to share ideas and visit with colleagues about solutions to shared challenges. It is also one of our most enjoyable events of the year, mixing fun with learning.

Typically, 40 – 50 individuals participate in the Fall Tour, which promotes a n i n t i m a t e and f r i end ly environment. It is an excellent event for those who are new to

the MNLA or to the industry, offering opportunities to gain valuable network connections and resources that will prove valuable in the future. For those who have been working in the industry for many years, the Fall Tour provides a chance to get re-energized. Many long-time MNLA members have found the Fall Tour helps them to gain excitement and think differently about their work. There is always something new to be learned from our peers, whether it is gained during a tour of a retail nursery or in a conversation with a colleague between tour sites. 2014 saw the addition of a golf tournament which remains well supported and enjoyed by all.

The Certified Plant Professional ProgramThe Certified Plant Professional (CPP) was originally developed by the Idaho Nursery & Landscape Association (INLA) and the Montana Nursery & Landscape Association (MNLA) to improve the professional qualifications of persons employed in the horticultural industry.

Through this program, Certified Plant Professionals are recognized by the gardening public as well as within the industry. Individuals who become certified are designated as “Certified Plant Professionals” within the states of Idaho and Montana. Successful CPPs are presented with a certificate to recognize their accomplishment. MNLA also provides press releases to assist CPPs and their employers in seeking local recognition.

To become a CPP, an individual must be knowledgeable in a wide variety of horticultural subjects including plant identification, soils, fertilization, turfgrass management, proper planting techniques, landscape design and more. Knowledge of these subjects can be gained through professional experience and through the study of the MNLA Certification Manual.

EligibilityApplicants for Certification must have worked in the nursery industry for at least one year. Anytime thereafter, an applicant may submit the appropriate documentation and fees to take the exam at the next scheduled time. You do not have to be an MNLA member or an employee of an MNLA member firm in order to acquire certification by MNLA. How To Become CertifiedEligible applicants need to submit a completed application, documentation of nursery employment and the appropriate fees to the MNLA Executive Director by the noted deadline. MNLA will notify each applicant of the time and location of the exam.

The certification tests are generally given twice a year, in January at the annual convention and in August or September at the MNLA annual Fall Tour. The exam consists of a plant identification test and a written test. The exam is based on the Certification Manual and on practical information gained from employment in the industry, including the ability to identify the correct genus,

species, common name, and cultivar (if appropriate) for each plant. The ID portion of the exam is based upon plants covered in Choosing Trees and Shrubs for Montana Landscapes, by George Evans and Alan Epps, as well as lists of Montana perennials and woody plants. These publications and lists are included in the manual. The second portion of the exam is a 200 question written exam of the principles and practices of virtually all aspects of the nursery industry. A passing grade is achieved by obtaining a 75% on both parts of the exam.

Certification ManualMNLA strongly recommends the Certification Manual as a study guide for all individuals preparing for the written exam. The manual is a programmed learning

manual. There is a study guide at the end of each chapter to reinforce the main points of the chapter. The manual contains more than 20 chapters on subjects including soils, planting, plant care, insect, weed and disease management, fruits, turf, marketing and the Montana Nursery Law. Individuals having extensive practical or academic knowledge of the subject wrote each chapter. The manual is an excellent source of information as well as an aid for exam

preparation.

CostsCertification manuals may be purchased through the MNLA office for $100 by members and $200 by non-members. As with most of MNLA’s products and benefits, candidates who work for MNLA member firms (or who are themselves MNLA members) receive a discount on test application fees. There are two exam segments, a written exam and a plant identification segment, which may be taken at the same time or at different times. Member registration fees for the exam are $50 per exam segment; non-member registration fees are $100 per exam segment. For 5 or more test takers from the same organization, please contact MNLA regarding available discounts.

Education & Certification

Exam ResultsExam results (scores) are typically mailed to each exam participant within two weeks of the exam date. A passing score on either part of the exam is good for five years. Individuals who pass only one portion of the exam, but who do not become certified within five (5) years will be required to again pass all portions of the exam before they are eligible to be certified.

Keeping Track of CPPsIf you have been certified through MNLA’s program, be sure to advise us if you change addresses or employer, so that we can notify you of your certification expiration date and/or of any changes to the certification program.

TransferabilityCertification as a CPP by the MNLA does not currently transfer to certification status through any other state Association certification program.

Renewal of CertificationIn January of 2003, MNLA members passed a motion that requires all Certified Plant Professionals (CPP) to renew their certification. The Education Committee’s intention in initiating this requirement was to ensure that once an individual obtains the “CPP” title, he/she continues relevant education in order to maintain the expertise that qualified him/her as a CPP. The education requirement for CPP renewal maintains the credibility and integrity of the certification program.

Education RequirementTwenty-five (25) points are needed to renew your certification. These points may be obtained by any one of the following means or by a combination of the following:

1. Successfully pass the plant identification exam again (worth 25 points).

2. Attend MNLA convention seminars (seminars are worth 1 point per hour). Sign in sheets will be circulated.

3. Participate in relevant community outreach work such as school programs, garden clubs, extension service, senior centers, etc. Outreach is worth 1 point per hour of activity.

4. Mentor certification students by participating in company-sponsored classes or working one-on-one with candidates. Mentoring is worth 1 point per hour of mentoring.

Early RenewalCPPs may renew their certification any time prior to the deadline if they have met the education requirement and submitted a renewal form. Renewal will not be required again until five years after the deadline.

How to RenewRenewal forms are available from the MNLA website (www.plantingmontana.com) and are available upon request from the MNLA office. To renew, simply complete the renewal form and submit it to the MNLA office. Do not submit a renewal form until you have completely met the 25 point requirement. Documentation which supports the activities reported on the renewal form is appreciated, but is not required. CPPs are encouraged to honestly report the required renewal activities and the hours they were involved in those activities.

The Integrated Pest Management ProgramThe Integrated Pest Management (IPM) Program is administered by MSU’s Plant Science Dept. It was originally co-developed by Missoula County Extension and MNLA. The basic four-part IPM program is available online (http://msuextension.org/urbanipm/) along with additional program information, requirements, and the registration process. MNLA members who complete this program will be recognized on the MSU and MNLA websites as well as receiving a certificate of completion by MSU & MNLA. There is currently no fee for this program.

College/University Study We offer one-year horticultural education scholarships to students each spring. Scholarships will be considered for vocational study, community college, and university courses of study in a horticultural-related field or other degree program. The amount of the award is based upon the applicant’s need, the extent to which the field of study corresponds to the Association’s focus and interest, and the availability of Association scholarship funds.

Short Course StudyScholarships are also offered for short courses in the horticultural industry. Short courses may include, but are not limited to, the following: industry conferences and conventions, certification preparation courses, master gardener programs, and other relevant classes or programs offered by federal, state, or local government agencies. Funds in this award category may be requested for registration fees/tuition, books and/or required materials, and related travel expenses.

EligibilityApplicants must be either an MNLA Active (Montana residents only) member or a family member or employee of an Active member company. The educational program must be in a horticulture-related field, such as: horticulture, floriculture, landscape design, landscape architecture, botany, plant pathology, forestry, or other degree program.

Applicants in the College/University Study award category must be Junior, Senior, or Graduate students. Applications

may be made by Sophomores for grants to be awarded for their Junior year.

Applications in the Short Course Study category must be actively engaged (working) in horticulture or a related field.

2019-2020 MNLA Membership Directory & Buyer’s Guide

It’s to your advantage to select the appropriate membership category for your company. MNLA makes numerous referrals to the public and to horticultural buyers based upon your membership category and the information you supply about your business on the membership application.

Active Members – Montana firmsVoting

Firm or individual who holds a current Montana Nursery License, or is actively engaged in the horticulture industry, and his/her principal place of business is in Montana. Montana-based retail nursery centers, greenhouses, wholesale growers, or landscape contractors who meet the criteria for a Montana Nursery License fall into this category. Dues are $195/year for first member; $98/year for each additional member.

Allied Members – Firms outside Montana or those engaged in a horticulture-related fieldNon-voting

Firm or individual actively engaged in a business or profession which is allied to the horticulture industry within and/or principal business is outside the state of Montana. This category is primarily for companies headquartered outside Montana, but serving the Montana horticulture industry. It is also for Montana companies that do not meet the Active membership category qualifications, but serve the horticulture industry. For example, Montana-based suppliers, landscape designers or architects who are not required to have a Montana Nursery License, fall into the Allied category.

Dues are $130/year for first member, $65/year for each additional member.

Associate Members – Educators, municipalities, related associationsNon-voting

Teachers engaged in horticulture education; any city, county, state, provincial or federal employee pursuing a career in horticulture; and any executive officer of any professional or trade association related to horticulture. MNLA does not make business referrals to Associate members, however, we may refer callers to Associate members when callers are seeking area resources or

education contacts. For this reason, an Associate category is not a substitute for either the Active or Allied categories.

Dues are $65/year.

Student MembersNon-voting

An individual actively pursuing the full-time study of horticulture, upon the recommendation of his/her faculty advisor or two (2) current members. MNLA does not make business referrals to members in the Student category. Dues are $25/year.

Life MembersVoting

Life Membership is honorary, awarded by the MNLA Board of Directors for exceptional service to industry and association.

There are no dues.

Membership YearYou may join MNLA at any time. All memberships are due for renewal annually on July 1st. The deadline for listing in the Annual Membership Directory & Buyer’s Guide is July 1st.

ANLA Lighthouse SupportThe MNLA membership voted at the 2010 Annual Membership Meeting to once again support the American Nursery & Landscape Association legislative Lighthouse Program.

At the time of renewal we will add to your membership fee a $10 Lighthouse donation. If you do not support this donation, you will have an option to deduct $10 from your membership fees.

As a Lighthouse Program partner, MNLA receives: an interactive state legislative website & a direct link to ANLA’s federal issues site; access to articles on key federal legislation & national horticultural industry issues, “preferred partner” treatment for member visits to Washington to lobby, and federally-related advocacy activities within the state.
