OPEN SHARING, GLOBAL BENEFITS

WHO WE AREThe Open Education Consortium envisions a world where everyone,

everywhere has access to the education they need to build their futures.

We seek to instill openness as a feature of education around the world,

allowing greatly expanded access to education while providing a shared

body of knowledge upon which innovative and effective approaches to

today’s social problems can be built. We are a worldwide community of

hundreds of higher education institutions and associated organizations

committed to advancing open education and its impact on individuals,

institutions and societies. The Open Education Consortium realizes change

by leveraging its sources of expert opinion, its global network and its position

as the principal voice of open education.

WHAT IS OPEN EDUCATION?Open education encompasses resources, tools and practices that employ

a framework of open sharing to improve educational access and

effectiveness worldwide. Open Education combines the traditions of

knowledge sharing and creation with 21st century technology to create a

vast pool of openly shared educational resources, while harnessing today’s

collaborative spirit to develop educational approaches that are more

responsive to learners’ needs.

SPOTLIGHT: ENERSA HAITIEntrepreneurs Jean-Ronel Noel and Alex Georges are

working to bring renewable energy to communities

throughout Haiti. Through their company, Enersa

(enersahaiti.com) they planned to create solar panels to

serve the needs of their country, but in their research and

development process, they required guidance in electrical

engineering. Noel found the materials he needed

on MIT OpenCourseWare.

Through Enersa, open educational resources touch lives

well beyond Noel’s and Georges’. Enersa employs 18

full-time solar technicians drawn from the communities

they serve, and Enersa’s products affect the daily

lives of thousands of Haitians. Enersa produces residential

and commercial solar systems and solar chargers for

smaller items such as cell phones and lamps, but their

signature product is a solar street lamp. In just two and a

half years, they have installed more than 500 of these in 58

cities and remote villages in Haiti. Enersa’s work has been

supported by the non-profit Appropriate Infrastructure

Development Group (AIDG).

“ It was much better than any other information I found on the Internet, since the other sites were written by electronics experts who assumed that it would be read by other experts…MIT OpenCourseWare was different because it explained things step by step. Using the [open educational resources] saved us a lot of time and money.”

Sustaining Members

The NeedEducation is an essential tool for individuals and society to solve the challenges of the

present and seize the opportunities of the future. However, the present provision of

education is limited by capacity; consequently, this resource is available to the few,

not the many.

The digital revolution offers a potential solution to these limitations, giving a global audience

unprecedented access to free, open and high-quality educational resources. More and

more institutions, governments, educators and learners are turning to open education as a

means to share and gain knowledge. To realize the full potential of open education, there’s

a strong need for global coordination to disseminate information and best practices, ensure

efficient and practical delivery for users and content providers and demonstrate impact

across sectors.

After graduating with a Master’s degree in chemical and

biochemical engineering in Denmark, Ankit returned to

India to determine his next steps. He had a strong technical

background with some unique skills gained through his

participation in extracurricular activities and handling his

family business. He realized the need to combine his skills

to solve the complex problems that are regularly faced

by businesses and organizations in today’s day-to-day

environment. Recognizing that a formal management

education was not feasible due to both financial and

logistical reasons, Ankit turned to the Open Education

Consortium. Over the course of two years, Ankit designed his

own interdisciplinary program in international management,

taking more than 20 courses from various universities through

the Open Education Consortium and from various MOOC

providers. He is well on his way to becoming a global

manager and leader of the 21st century.

“Thank you, Open Education Consortium, [for helping me to exceed]

my own expectations, to push myself to the limit and for providing quality

education. I was ambitious [and] determined to work on my vision but it was not possible without your support.

Accept my sincere gratitude to all the universities, teachers and every

other member of the Open Education Consortium, who have significantly

contributed to my efforts.

SPOTLIGHT: ANKIT’S STORY

It was really great for us to join this network of 300 universities worldwide all having in common the will to innovate in education.”
