Leaders from GM’s 63 U.S. facil- ities met in Detroit to discuss and voted on the agreement Oct. 28. Now it must be ratified by GM’s U.S. hourly workers. The four-year contract covers 52,600 GM factory workers. Like a previous contract rati- fied by Fiat Chrysler workers, GM’s agreement would eliminate a two-tier wage system over eight years. GM currently pays recent hires around $15.78 per hour. Un- der the new agreement, workers with four or more years of experi- ence will make the top $29 hourly wage within four years; workers with less experience would make between $22.50 and $28 in four years and top wages in eight years. Members to Vote on UAW Leaders’ Proposed GM Contract General Motors set aside tradi- tional vehicle development to create the Chevrolet Bolt EV by teaming up with the Korean elec- tronics firm LG. The result of their joint labors is an EV that can travel more than 200 miles on a single electric charge. Offering consumers the first long-range, affordable EV, said GM spokesman Kevin Kelly, required an unprecedented sup- plier relationship combining expertise in infotainment, bat- tery systems and component development with GM’s proven in-house capabilities in electric motor design, battery control, system validation and vehicle body/system integration. Following joint planning and research, GM and LG Corp. brought the Chevrolet Bolt EV to reality, Kelly said. The wait is over. Chevrolet began shipping the new 2016 Camaro to dealers on Oct. 26. The first wave of production models should arrive at dealer- ships for customer delivery by mid-November, said GM spokes- woman Erin Davis. The Gen Six Camaro is assem- bled at GM’s Lansing Grand River Assembly facility, which is in the process of getting a $175 million upgrade in tooling and equipment to support its produc- tion. “It’s an exciting day for every- one involved in bringing the new Camaro from a concept to the as- sembly line,” said Mike Trevor- row, Lansing regional plant man- ager. “As the transporters head out to dealerships across the coun- try, the hard work and pride of everyone at Lansing Grand River Assembly goes with them.” The 2016 Chevrolet Camaro of- fers higher levels of perform- ance, technology and refinement starting at $26,695 for the Camaro 1LT and $37,295 for the 1SS, said GM spokesman Monte Doran. Six all-new powertrain combi- nations are offered, including a standard 2.0L Turbo and an avail- able, new 3.6L V6 in LT models, and the 455-hp LT1 6.2L V8 in the SS – making it the most powerful Camaro SS ever. Each engine is available with a six-speed manual or eight- speed automatic transmission. The first vehicles delivered to customers are coupes – SS or LT models with the 3.6L V6, Davis said. The Camaro Convertible and models with the 2.0L Turbo en- gine will begin shipping in early 2016. Vehicle mass has been re- duced between 223 and 390 pounds, depending on the mod- el, “creating a more nimble, re- sponsive driving experience,” Doran said. “The leaner, stiffer platform and slightly smaller dimensions are accentuated by a dramatic, sculpted exterior. “Meticulously tuned in the wind tunnel, the new Camaro’s exterior contributes to per- formance through reduced aerodynamic lift for better handling while enhancing effi- ciency.” The ‘stiffer’ platform is the Alpha platform, which is also the platform used for Cadillac ATS and CTS. Inside, a driver-focused cock- pit integrates numerous tech- nologies, including a new Driver Mode Selector, configurable in- strument cluster and an avail- able customizable ambient light- ing feature, Doran said. Standard connectivity features include Chevrolet MyLink with Apple CarPlay capability and OnStar 4G LTE with Wi-Fi hotspot. “There has been a lot of excite- ment and anticipation around our community and throughout the world for the next-generation Camaro,” said UAW Local 652 president Mike Green. “We have received great prod- ucts here because of the quality of work always performed by the Lansing autoworker, active and retired.” 2016 Camaros Start Trek To Nation’s GM Dealers The first 2016 Camaro rolled off the Lansing Grand River assembly line on Oct. 26. matrix and increase the interfacialstrength between the bubble andthe resin. The result is a more ro-bust resin mix that makes moldedparts more resistant to handlingdamage, and prevents the micro-cracks that cause paint pops, pitsand blistering. The product also uses Owens

Corning Advantex glass technol-ogy that can be manufacturedwith lower environmental impactcompared with other glass types,Kitny said.Glass-reinforced polymers can

have a lower global warming po-tential (GWP) than steel in theproduction and use phase forautomotive applications such asbody parts, she said.“By replacing the CaCO3 filler

with glass microspheres, and in-corporating Owens Corning’s

ME1975 roving glass fiber, wehave achieved a lightweight com-posite material that is e-coatoven-capable and offers a superi-or surface finish for Class A ap-plications,” said Probir Guha, vice president, Research and De-velopment for CSP.“Depending on part design, it

can be as light as aluminum, andmore cost-effective. Replacingconventional materials like steelwith lighter alternatives like TCAUltra Lite decreases energy con-sumption and greenhouse gasemissions during vehicle use.”TCA Ultra Lite offers automak-

ers an opportunity, Kitny said, toachieve a Class A finish with amaterial that is resistant to cor-rosion, dents and dings, ultimate-ly providing the consumer with avehicle that doesn’t rust, andwon’t be subject to the scratchesand dings that mar the surface of

any vehicle panel made of metal. In addition, Kitny said, TCA

Ultra Lite provides the benefitsthat come with using a compos-ite over a metal, including signifi-cantly reduced tooling costs (50

percent or more, depending onproduction volumes) and theability to achieve unique designcues such as deep draws thatcan’t be achieved with a stampedmetal.

FRANKFURT, Germany (AP) –Volkswagen is hiring a top strate-gy executive from competitorOpel as it seeks to recover from ascandal over its cheating on U.S.diesel emissions tests.Taking on Thomas Sedran as

Volkswagen’s new chief of corpo-rate strategy brings another out-side voice to the company as itreexamines its culture in thewake of the scandal. The move announced Oct. 26

by the automaker based in Wolfs-burg, Germany, comes on top ofthe company’s decision to hireChristine Hohmann-Dennhardt, aformer judge who oversaw legalcompliance at competitor Daim-ler AG in the wake of a briberyscandal there.Sedran is a former managing

director for turnaround firm AlixPartners. He joined General Mo-tors’ Opel division as head ofstrategy and operations in 2012.

The appointment of chieffinancial officer Hans DieterPoetsch as board chairman inthe wake of the scandal led toquestions about whether thecompany needed more outsidersto get to the bottom of its prob-lems. New CEO Matthias Muelleris also a longtime Volkswagen AGemployee, replacing Martin Win-terkorn, who resigned. The U.S. Environmental Protec-

tion Agency says Volkswagenequipped 482,000 cars with soft-ware that disabled emissionscontrols when the cars were notbeing tested.About 11 million of its cars

worldwide have the software, though not all are confirmed tohave cheated on tests.VW has set aside 6.5 billion

euros ($7.3 billion) to cover finesand recalls, but analysts say theeventual cost will likely be sever-al times that.

VW Looks for New StrategyTo Soften Emissions Scandal

DETROIT (AP) – For the thirdtime in seven years, General Mo-tors is recalling cars that canleak oil and catch fire, in some in-stances damaging garages andhomes. The recall, which covers 1.4

million vehicles dating to the1997 model year, is needed be-cause repairs from the first tworecalls didn’t work. More than1,300 cars caught fire after theywere fixed by dealers, the com-pany said.In the previous recalls, in 2008

and 2009, GM told owners topark the cars outside until re-pairs can be made since mostof the fires happened shortlyafter drivers turned off the en-gines.A spokesman was checking to

see if the same recommendationapplies this time.U.S. safety regulators became

aware of the fires in early 2007and GM has since reported 19minor related injuries. In 2008, aGM spokeswoman said the carswere responsible for 267 fires, in-cluding at least 17 that burnedstructures. The latest recall, mainly in

North America, includes: the1997-2004 Pontiac Grand Prixand Buick Regal; the 2000-2004Chevrolet Impala; the 1998 and1999 Chevrolet Lumina andOldsmobile Intrigue; and the1998-2004 Chevrolet Monte Car-lo.All have 3.8-liter V6 engines.Over time, a valve cover gas-

ket can degrade, allowing oil to

seep out. Under hard braking, oildrops can fall onto the exhaustmanifold and catch fire. Flamescan spread to a plastic sparkplug wire channel and the rest ofthe engine. The problem first surfaced in

2007, when 21 consumer com-plaints about engine fires insome of the cars prompted theNational Highway Traffic SafetyAdministration to investigate. That probe found three injuries. Most of the blazes happened

five to 15 minutes after the en-gines were turned off, accordingto agency documents. The investigation led to the re-

call in March 2008 of more than200,000 U.S. cars with super-charged engines. A year later, GMrecalled almost 1.5 million morecars that weren’t supercharged.Dealers replaced the spark

plug wire channels but docu-ments filed with the governmentdon’t mention any repair of theoil leaks.GM hasn’t come up with a final

fix in the most recent recall, spokesman Alan Adler said. The company will use state

registration databases in an ef-fort to track down the owners,he said. The 1,300 fires were discov-

ered when GM began investigat-ing whether to recall some 2004models, Adler said. The recall is so large that it

could have an impact on GM’sfourth-quarter earnings, al-though Adler said that hasn’tbeen determined.

UAW President DennisWilliams had promised – andwon – richer benefits from GM,which is a bigger and wealthiercompany than FCA.GM reported last week that it

earned $1.36 billion in the thirdquarter. Fiat Chrysler lost $339million during the quarter be-cause of big recall costs in NorthAmerica.“There were multiple things we

were able to do because of GM’swealth,” Williams said.

Williams said lower-tier work-ers – who make up 20 percent ofGM’s hourly workforce – will nowbe eligible for traditional healthcare benefits. Both tiers of workers would

get an $8,000 signing bonus ifthey ratify the contract, higherthan the $3,000 and $4,000bonuses offered at FCA. And theprofit-sharing formula in GM’sproposed agreement promises$1,000 per $1 billion of GM’sNorth American profits.FCA is giving workers $800

based on percentage gains in its

North American margins.GM’s proposed contract also

offers $60,000 for up to 4,000 eli-gible employees who agree to re-tire next spring. Williams saidthat is meant as a reward to long-time workers who stuck with thecompany and gave up wages andbenefits during its 2009 bank-ruptcy.The UAW and GM reached the

proposed agreement Oct. 25 justbefore a deadline the union hadset to strike. Williams said hedidn’t yet know when workerswill begin voting on it.

When BorgWarner officially in-augurated its newly expandedPowertrain Technical Center inAuburn Hills on Oct. 23, it wasdoing something smart, saidMichigan Senator DebbieStabenaw – it was betting onMichigan and the power of itsmanufacturing capabilities.

Stabenaw was just one of sev-eral public officials on hand tocelebrate the expanded technicalcenter’s opening.

“Metro detroit has always beenthe cradle of innovation, whetherwe’re talking about building TinLizzies in 1915 or building mod-ern turbo chargers developed ata place like this technical center,”Stabenaw said. “I want to saycongratulations to you folks atBorgWarner, you are continuing atradition of innovation and man-ufacturing in metro Detroit.

“When BorgWarner made thedecision to move its corporateheadquarters from Chicago tohere 10 years ago, that was asmart decision. They are buildingon success and there are a lot ofcool reasons to live and workhere. The company wants tomake things in a global economyand when you want to do that, bet on Michigan every time.”

Chris Thomas, vice presidentand chief technology officer at

BorgWarner, said that the expan-sion of the company’s power-train tech center was about threeyears in the making.

“The automobile industry inthe past decade has undergoneconstant change,” Thomas said.“And BorgWarner has been aleader in that industry innova-tion. We built what would be-come the first part of the power-train tech center in 2002. It wasexpanded in 2014 with the addi-tion of 16,000 square feet. Thislatest 2015 expansion of 46,000square feet is adding 180 high-paying technical jobs in south-east Michigan.”

The additional expansion isneeded, Thomas said, because theareas that BorgWarner specializesin – engines, transmissions and dri-vetrains – are “vital in improvinggas mileage and lowering emis-sions.” Automakers will have tomeet stricter federal standardsby the year 2025 and the demandfor systems that can provide theseeconomies will grow only greateras time goes on.

“BorgWarner is the one compa-ny that can line up all these sys-tems and design them to work to-gether to achieve lower emis-sions and better fuel economy.Getting these results will comefrom a tradeoff between perform-ance, fuel economy and emis-sions. BorgWarner can do that.”

As to the future, Thomas saidBorgWarner will continue towork in the powertrain field toprovide the best systems to itscustomers. And that means hav-ing the best engineering talentworking at the company.

“Part of the reason for expand-ing this complex is that Borg-Warner wants to operate on theworld stage and that means, withtoday’s sophisticated electronicand computerized technology, competing with Apple andGoogle for talent,” Thomas said.“To do that, you have to have thebest facilities.”

Robin Kendrick, president andgeneral manager of TransmissionSystems, said having an expand-ed facility means there is spaceto hire more people.

“The most critical issue we’refacing today,” Kendrick said, “isthe speed with which today’s mo-tor vehicles are being refreshedby manufacturers. We now havethis expanded facility where wecan work with our customers tocreate, in a collaborative fashion, the innovations -- and we’ll beable to do it quickly.”

Kendrick said the expandedtech center should help Borg-Warner achieve its goal of $20 bil-lion in worldwide sales by 2020.2014 sales were $8.3 billion. Thecompany currently employs 22,000people at 57 locations in 18 coun-

tries. Customers include Ford, GM,Fiat Chrysler, VW and Toyota.

Additions to the tech center in-cluded a new Torq TransferHeavy Duty Dyno testing roomand a new Transmission SystemsFriction Material Lab.

TOKYO (AP) – Visions of carsthat drive themselves withoutemitting a bit of pollution whileentertaining passengers with on-line movies and social media arewhat took center stage at theTokyo Motor Show.

Japan, home to the world’stop-selling automaker, has ayounger generation uninterestedin owning or driving cars. Theshow is about wooing them back. It’s also about pushing an ambi-tious government-backed planthat paints Japan as a leader inautomated driving technology.

Reporters got a preview lookat the biannual exhibition Oct.28, ahead of its opening to thepublic Oct. 30.

Nissan Motor Co. showed aconcept vehicle loaded withlaser scanners, a 360-degree cam-era setup, a radar and computerchips so the car can “think” todeliver autonomous driving. TheJapanese automaker called it IDS,which stands for “intelligent driv-ing system.”

Nissan, based in Yokohama,Japan, said it will offer some au-tonomous driving features by the

end of next year in Japan. By2018, it said vehicles with thetechnology will be able to con-duct lane changes on publichighways.

By 2020, such vehicles will beable to make their way throughintersections on regular urbanroads.

Nissan officials said they wereworking hard to make the carsmart enough to recognize thedifference between a red trafficlight and a tail light, learn how toturn on intersections wherewhite lane indicators might bemissing and anticipate from bodylanguage when a pedestrianmight cross a street.

Nissan’s IDS vehicle is alsoelectric, with a new battery that’smore powerful than the one cur-rently in the automaker’s Leafelectric vehicle.

Although production and salesplans were still undecided, it cantravel a longer distance on a sin-gle charge and recharge morequickly.

A major challenge for cars thatdrive themselves is winning so-cial acceptance. They would

have to share the roads with nor-mal cars with drivers as well aswith pedestrians, animals andunexpected objects.

That’s why some automakersat the show are packing the tech-nology into what looks more likea golf cart or scooter than a car, such as Honda Motor Co.’s cubi-cle-like Wander Stand and Wan-der Walker scooter.

Instead of trying to venture onfreeways and other public roads, these are designed for controlledenvironments, restricted to shut-tling people to predetermineddestinations.

BorgWarner: Tech Center Expansion ‘Vital’

Tokyo Auto Show Heads Back to the Future

DETROIT (AP) – A formertransportation secretary turnedlobbyist selected by the govern-ment to monitor the recall of mil-lions of Fiat Chrysler vehiclesalso represents an air bag makerresponsible for millions of re-called vehicles.

Rodney Slater, who ran theTransportation Department forfour years under President BillClinton, has been lobbying thedepartment and Congress on be-half of Takata Corp. of Japan re-garding air bag issues, lobbyingrecords reviewed by The Associ-ated Press show.

Takata’s air bag inflators canexplode too forcefully, firingshrapnel into the passengercompartment. They’re linked toeight deaths and have led to therecall of tens of millions of vehi-cles, including 4 million made byFiat Chrysler.

Fiat Chrysler, also known asFCA, is under an order from theNational Highway Traffic SafetyAdministration to hire an inde-pendent monitor to oversee thecompany’s recalls in response tomisbehavior involving 23 recalls. The safety administration select-ed Slater from a list of three can-didates supplied by FiatChrysler. The decision was an-nounced by FCA on Oct. 23.

Gordon Trowbridge, aspokesman for NHTSA, saidSlater had disclosed his repre-sentation of Takata, but the safe-ty administration and FiatChrysler decided it wasn’t aproblem. Safety advocates saySlater’s representation of Takatais a clear conflict of interest.

In July, the government hitFCA with a record $105 millionpenalty for failing to tell cus-tomers about recalls, make re-call repairs and other infrac-tions.

General Motors last week re-ceived the first load of massivestamping presses for its $174 mil-lion stamping facility, part of theLansing Grand River AssemblyPlant where the first 2016Chevrolet Camaros left for dealershowrooms. The new presses, which will

save about $14 million a year inlogistics costs tied to materialhandling, will stamp parts for theCamaro and the Cadillac ATS andthe CTS family of vehicles. The load, weighing in at more

than 210,000 pounds, is for thesecond press in the first of twostamping lines at LGR. The entirestamping line weighs more than7.2 million pounds. The next line will arrive at

the plant in December with pro-

duction for both starting in 2016.The announcement of the $174

million investment was made inMay. The new equipment andtooling is being used to assemblethe sixth-generation ChevroletCamaro. The investment also heradled

the return of hundreds of work-ers to build America’s best-sell-ing performance car for the lastfive years, said GM spokesmanMonte Doran. The facility improvements in-

clude three new paint systemsfor Camaro-specific colors:Summit White, Bright Yellow, and Red Hot.The investment also includes

installation of two roboticframers, which allow better di-mensional control to provide a

more precise drive ex--perience,said Doran. The Lansing Grand River As-

sembly Plant resumed a secondshift of 500 jobs in late summer. The new Chevrolet Camaro

was introduced on Detroit’s BelleIsle on May 16. To improve onthat success, Doran said, thesixth-generation Camaro elevatesevery aspect of Camaro with asuite of new technologies, evenhigher levels of performance andfuel economy, and a leaner, moreathletic design.“I may be the luckiest mayor in

America today,” said LansingMayor Virg Bernero. “Gearing upfor full-scale production of thelegendary Chevy Camaro is anew high point in the more thantwo decades of extraordinary

partnership between the City ofLansing, General Motors and theUAW.“We build the best cars in

the world right here in Lansing, and we’re delighted to welcomethe 2016 Chevy Camaro to the

Lansing-made family of great au-tomobiles.”Built in 2001, Lansing Grand

River is GM’s second-newest U.S.assembly plant and also the man-ufacturing home of the ATS, CTSand CTS V-series cars.

2015 Ford F-150

DEARBORN, Mich. (AP) – Pick-up trucks powered Ford MotorCompany to record North Ameri-can results in the third quarter, and the company expects thetrend to continue for a while.Ford earned $2.7 billion in

North America, up 89 percentfrom a year ago, largely on high-er sales of its new F-150 pickuptruck.Ford introduced the alu-

minum-sided truck last fall butdidn’t reach full production at itstwo U.S. factories until June. The results were the

strongest indication yet thatFord’s risky decision to remakeits best-selling vehicle as alighter aluminum model is pay-ing off. Sales of F-Series pickups– the F-150 and its larger sib-lings – reached a nine-year highfor the July-September period. In the U.S. alone, Ford sold207,271 F-Series trucks. That’s85 trucks per hour.Customers also paid more for

them. Chief Financial Officer BobShanks said Ford was making anaverage of $2,000 more per F-Se-ries truck compared with a yearago.Shanks said the aluminum-

sided F-150, which is 700 poundslighter than the older steel ver-sion, is a money-maker eventhough aluminum is more expen-sive than steel.Ford’s results echoed those of

its crosstown rival, General Mo-tors Company. Last month, GMposted a record $3.3 billion pre-tax profit in North America, driv-en largely by truck and SUVsales.Truck sales should continue to

be strong into next year and be-yond, thanks to low interestrates, improving employmentnumbers and other factors, FordCEO Mark Fields said.Ford will introduce new alu-

minum-sided Super Duty trucksnext year, which will drive sales. And many buyers are expectedto replace aging trucks soon.Fields said 25 percent of thetrucks on U.S. roads are now 20years old or older.

Ford’s overall net income rose129 percent to $1.9 billion for thequarter. Its profit, of 48 cents pershare, compared with a profit of27 cents in the same quarter ayear ago.The Dearborn-based automak-

er’s shares fell after it failed tomeet Wall Street’s expectations.Excluding one-time items, Fordearned 45 cents per share, a pen-ny lower than Wall Street’s fore-cast, according to analysts sur-veyed by FactSet.Shanks said analysts forecast a

32 percent tax rate, but Ford’sthird-quarter rate was 33 per-cent. Ford also recorded a one-time profit of $166 million withthe public offering of NemakSAB, a Mexican supplier of alu-minum auto parts that Fordowns a stake in.Automotive revenue rose 9

percent to $35.8 billion, beat-ing analysts’ forecast of $35.5 bil-lion.The Dearborn-based automak-

er’s overall sales rose 7 percentto 1.6 million. Sales were up 17percent in Europe, but fell inSouth America, the Middle Eastand Asia.In North America, sales

jumped 16 percent.Ford lost money in Europe,

South America and the MiddleEast but eked out a $20 millionprofit in Asia despite a $130 mil-lion hit from production cuts inChina.Shanks said Ford remains bull-

ish on China despite falling de-mand for new cars.“We still see growth. It may be

a bit slower than it has been,” hesaid.Shanks said Ford is on track to

deliver the “breakthrough” yearit promised after disappointingresults last year.He said Ford’s operating prof-

it of $7 billion in the first ninemonths of this year is already10 percent higher than all of2014. He also said North Ameri-can operating margins shouldcome in at the upper end ofFord’s forecast of 8.5 percent to9.5 percent.

MILAN (AP) – Fiat Chrysler Au-tomobiles NV said Oct. 28 itswung to a net loss of 306 millioneuros ($339 million) in the thirdquarter as it recalculated thecost of a huge recall campaign inNorth America.Fiat Chrysler increased by 761

million euros the estimated costof future recalls in the UnitedStates and Canada after revisingits actuarial method. The mass-market carmaker, which is spin-ning off its sports car unit Fer-rari, said the quarterly loss com-pared with a net profit of 174 mil-lion euros for the same periodlast year.CEO Sergio Marchionne said

that recall costs, which had pre-viously appeared to be anom-alous, “will be much more struc-tural, at least for the foreseeablefuture.”Fiat Chrysler has faced a tu-

multuous year of conflict withU.S. government regulators. TheNational Highway Traffic SafetyAdministration in July hitChrysler with a record $105 mil-lion penalty for violating laws in

23 recalls involving 11 million ve-hicles. The company admitted ithad failed to fully comply with re-call rules. On Oct. 27, Fiat Chrysler an-

nounced the retirement of itssafety chief.Fiat Chrysler said its adjusted

earnings before interest and tax-es were up 35 percent to 1.3 bil-lion euros in the quarter, a figurethat excluded the costs of the fu-ture recall campaign.Worldwide shipments were flat

at 1.1 million units, despite a 27percent increase in Jeep vol-umes. Net revenues rose 17 per-cent to 27.5 billion euros onstrong results in North Americaand continued recovery in Eu-rope.Ferrari revenues rose 9 per-

cent to 723 million euros on salesof the new 488 GTB and 458 Spe-ciale A, which increased volumesby 20 percent to 1,949 units. Thesupercar maker, reporting sepa-rately for the first time, achieveda 62 percent increase in net profitto 94 million euros.Fiat Chrysler just completed a

successful Wall Street listing of a10 percent share of the maker ofluxury street cars and powerfulFormula One racing machines. The move raised $982.4 millionto help fund plans to ramp upproduction of higher margin AlfaRomeos for export from Italy, along with Maseratis.A second listing in Milan of Fiat

Chrysler’s remaining 80 percentFerrari stake, which will be dis-tributed to Fiat Chrysler share-holders, is expected in early Jan-uary, Marchionne said. The Fer-rari family retains 10 percent ofthe company.Alfa Romeo’s relaunch sched-

ule, meanwhile, will be adjusted,Marchionne said, due to declin-ing sales in China.“A significant portion of our

volume ambitions for Alfa wereChina-driven,” Marchionne ac-knowledged.He stood by his ambitious goal

of increasing Alfa sales to 400,000units by 2018, but said a portionof the volume goals for Chinawould be shifted to other mar-kets.

An aerial shot of the F-150 corn maze at Leaders Farm near Napoleon, Ohio.

Without getting too corny, afarmer in Ohio decided to showhis love of the new Ford F-150pickup truck by constructing amaze made of maize.Inspired by the Ford F-150, a

seven-acre corn maze was creat-ed at Leaders Farm nearNapoleon, Ohio, said Fordspokesman Mike Levine.Leaders Farm has been enter-

taining Midwestern families andlocal schools for 18 years withchallenging corn mazes thatcan take up to an hour to com-plete.In this case, it assumes that

visitors don’t get lost in thewheels, Levine said.“We are a multi-generation

Ford-driving family,” said KristinLeaders of Leaders Farm.“My husband Brad was read-

ing a magazine last winter andsaw the new F-150 design andloved it. We thought it would re-ally stand out as the feature of

this year’s corn maze.”Planning, designing and grow-

ing the maze is a year-round ac-tivity, Leaders said.Creating the F-150 design re-

quired GPS technology to pre-cisely cut the shape of the truckinto the corn field. There’s also Big Jack – a mas-

sive pumpkin cannon mountedto the chassis of a restored FordF-450 Super Duty.Big Jack is powered by a 500-

pound, 30-psi compressed airtank that’s capable of launchingpumpkins almost half a mile,Levine said.Leaders Farm is also home to

13 goats and 40 cows, and toScout, the barnyard dog.The giant maze is expected to

produce about 1,120 bushels ofcorn, Levine said. After the maze is finished for

Mopar will have some “tanta-lizingly” modified vehicles at theSpecialty Equipment Market As-sociation (SEMA) Show Nov. 3-6at the Las Vegas Convention Cen-ter, said Fiat Chrysler spokesmanAriel Gavilan. The vehicles will be amix of pro-

duction and concept Mopar prod-ucts that have been customized totransform Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep,Ram and Fiat vehicles, demon-strating how theMopar brand canhelp owners personalize theirrides, Gavilan said.Nearly 20 vehicles, as well as

hundreds of Mopar parts and ac-cessories, will fill the 15,345-square-foot Mopar SEMA exhibit. Those who might wish to see

the vehicles at the SEMA show, but can’t afford time off fromwork or the plane ticket to LasVegas, will want to see the vehi-cles’ unveiling via a live webcastof the Mopar event at SEMA, Gav-ilan said. The webcast will be available

starting at 7:25 p.m. EasternTime or 4:25 p.m. Pacific Time onNov. 3 at: livestream.com/-FCALive/Mopar2015SEMA.Gavilan said Mopar was trade-

Parts to enhance speed and han-dling for both road and racinguse, the brand soon expanded toinclude technical service andcustomer support.

Today, Mopar is Fiat Chrysler’sservice, parts and customer-carebrand and distributes more than500,000 parts and accessories inmore than 150 markets aroundthe world, Gavilan said.SEMA offers Mopar and Fiat

Chrysler the opportunity toshow retailers of aftermarketparts just what can be done. Theshow is also well attended by themedia, which in turn gets themessage out to the public, Gavi-lan said.

Show in January this year.Chevrolet confirmed in Februarythat the Bolt EV would go intoproduction at GM’s Orion Town-ship assembly plant in late 2016.Engineers considered different

vehicle architectures, electricdriving ranges and performanceoptions for the Bolt EV before de-ciding the vehicle must be afford-able and deliver 200-plus miles ofall-electric driving with spiritedperformance, Kelly said.LG supplied an array of new

components and systems for theChevrolet Bolt EV, including:• Electric Drive Motor (built

from GM design);• Power Invertor Module (con-

verts DC power to AC for thedrive unit);• On Board Charger;• Electric Climate Control Sys-

tem Compressor;• Battery Cells and Pack;• High Power Distribution

Module (manages the flow ofhigh voltage to various compo-nents);• Battery Heater;• Accessory Power Module

(maintains low-voltage power de-livery to accessories);• Power Line Communication

Module (manages communica-tion between vehicle and a DCcharging station);• Instrument Cluster;• Infotainment System.“Chevrolet needs to be disrup-

tive in order to maintain ourleadership position in electrifica-tion,” said Mark Reuss, GM exec-utive vice president of GlobalProduct Development, Purchas-ing and Supply Chain. “By takingthe best of our in-house engi-neering prowess establishedwith the Chevrolet Volt and

Spark EV, and combining the ex-perience of the LG Group, we’reable to transform the concept ofthe industry’s first long-range, af-fordable EV into reality.”LG Electronics Vehicle Compo-

nents led a team of LG compa-nies, including LG Chem, LG In-notek, LG Display and LG Elec-tronics, to help develop the BoltEV, Kelly said. LG Electronics hasinvested more than $250 millionin an engineering and manufac-turing facility in Incheon, Korea,to support the component devel-opment and manufacturing forBolt EV components.“Being selected as GM’s EV

technology partner positions LGas a key player in next-genera-tion vehicular technologies,”said Woo-jong Lee, president andCEO of the LG Electronics Vehi-cle Components Co. “The oppor-tunity to work with GM on suchgame-changing technology is in-dicative of exactly the type ofcontributions that traditionaltech companies can make in theautomotive space.”GM’s relationship with LG be-

gan in 2007 when LG Electronicswas tasked with supplying thevehicle communications modulefor OnStar, GM’s exclusive tele-matics system, Kelly said. Anoth-er LG-owned company, LG Chem, and GM have a long-standing re-lationship: the company waschosen as the sole supplier ofbattery cells for the first-genera-tion Chevrolet Volt, whichlaunched in 2010.After delivering “exceptional”

quality for the more than 23 mil-lion cells with less than twoproblems per million cells pro-duced for the first-generationChevrolet Volt, Kelly said GMturned to the LG Corp. to bringforward new expertise.

Ford ExpandsEfforts to HelpFeed the Poor

ZF TRW of Livionia, the Activeand Passive Safety TechnologyDivision of ZF AG, has receivedits first production contract forthe Integrated Brake Control(IBC) system – a vacuum inde-pendent technology that simpli-fies the brake system architec-ture while offering enhancedperformance, said TRWspokesman John Wilkerson. The IBC replaces, in a single

integrated unit, the electronicstability control system, alongwith the vacuum booster andthe associated cables, sensors, switches, electronic controllersand vacuum pumps where theyare required for low or no vacu-um configurations. It is a highly scalable solution

that can support the brake sys-tem requirements from A seg-ment cars through to large SportUtility Vehicles.Manfred Meyer, vice president,

ZF TRW braking systems, saidThe Integrated Brake Controlsystem represents the future ofbraking technology and helps tosatisfy the global industry trendsof CO2 efficiency, safety and au-tomated driving. It supports all powertrain con-

figurations, Meyer said, and canintegrate regenerative brakingtechnology for hybrids and elec-tric vehicles. It also helps deliveradvanced safety in the form ofrapid building of brake pressurefor high dynamic demands suchas automatic emergency brakingand will support brake vehiclecontrol and stopping require-ments for partially to fully auto-mated driving functions. The IBC system will launch in

high volume in 2018 for a majorvehicle manufacturer, Wilkersonsaid.
