NEWS LETTERDEMONSTRATION ON AZOLLA PRODUCTION

DistributationofAzollacultureto selectedbeneficiariesParticularly in rural area, dwindling numbers of dairyanimals has recently aggravating the problem in dairysector in context with milk yield, productivity and supply ofmilk and milk products, with ever growing humanpopulation and consequently huge demand for milk andmilk products. The prominent reasons behind this worsesituation might be the gap between required fodder and itsactual availability. Again fodder cultivation does notperceived as profitable venture by the majority of dairyfarmers who possessed land might be due to theirnegligence, cost involved in cultivation of fodder crop andyet again its less competitiveness against the food and cashcrops due to gradually declining land holding. Consideringthese facts, Department of Animal Science, Krishi VigyanKendra, Risod has recently organized hands on training(practical demonstrations) as per the annual plan 2017 -18of Institute to the participating 10 dairy animal owners. Most of the dairy animal owners were from the operationalarea of the institute. Dr. D. L. Ramteke informedparticipated dairy animal owners about techniques toproduce Azolla along with all required scientificinformation and given hand on training (Practicaldemonstration), so that farmers effectively learns therequired skill to produce Azolla at their farm by seeing anddoing it for its better adoption and sustainable dairyfarming.

Cont. From Pg.No.l campus i.e. soil testing, orgnic unit, fisheryunit, poultry unit, soya processing unit, Community RadioStation etc. The valedictory session of the programme wasorganized in the chief presence of Dr. R. L. Kale on 25January 2018. Trainee presented the future sustainablelivelihood plan in group during valedictory session andexpressed satisfaction towards the KVK for successfulorganization of this programme. All KVK staff took effortsfor successful organization of programme.

ASSESSMENT OF BYPASS FAT FOR MILCH ANIMALS

Distributationof bypassfat to selectedbeneficiariesIn Indian condition, poor feeding is the major reason oflowproductivity in milch animals. Due to lack of knowledge andnegligence of balance ration in milch animals results lessmilk yield. Scientifically, balanced diet should be provided tomilch animals which contains protein, fat, minerals and othercomponents in appropriate ratio. Due to imbalanced dietanimal gives less milk and over a period of time incontinuation with such low energy diet animals becomesweak, infertile and prone to many infectious diseases.KrishiVigyan Kendra has undertaken assessment of Bypass fat formilch animals to increase the milk productivity. According toit, "Bypass Fat" has been distributed to six dairy farmers so asthey should incorporate it in concentrate feed under theguidance of expert. As per schedule of this field trial, it isplanned to take observations continuously at appropriateinterval. After collection of data from all the dairy animalsunder trial it will be analyzed for further interpretation andrecommendation in the field after finding it's significant inmilk yield growth. The variables like daily milk yield, lactation length, milk yield per lactation, reproductiveefficiency etc. of dairy animals will be tested with diseaseprevalence. Dr.D.L.Ramteke has guided in detailed to thedairy animal owners about feeding of "By Pass Fat".

Cont. From Pg.No.l villages. Shri. Anantraoji Deshmukh in hisaddress focused on sustainable livelihood developmentfollowed by market access and value addition in agricultureand allied sectors. Poultry are probable the most important livestock speciesfor many poor rural families. Poultry keeping is largely theresponsibility of women.Major gaps in promotion of poultry farming:

• There is no commercial poultry feed plantconsidering the huge population of poultry.

• For availability of day old chick there is nocommercial hatchery in the district.

Technology, implementation and support:Initially KVK was engaged in providing training,

organizing workshop and interaction meet on poultryfarming to the rural youths. By knowing the feedback of thetrainees and requirements of poultry farmers, there is lackof response undertaking poultry activities, due to nonavailability of good quality poultry germ plasm. Poultryentrepreneurs were demanding regular batch to batchsupply of day old chicks, without giving gap in poultrybatches and also feed demand emerges from theentrepreneurs. On this line in the year 2004, KVK hasintroduced dual purpose Giriraja poultry breed developedby Directorate of Poultry Research, Hyderabad forbackyard poultry farming.Uptake, Spread and Benefits:

Trainings on poultry housing, feeding and healthmanagement before distribution of chicks is imparted byKVK to 6630 trainees in the district so that the poultry bird

NEWS LETTERcan be reared to attain full genetical potential. The birds arereared on backyard semi intensive system and birds arefeed with compound concentrate feed and locally availablematerial. Irregularity in batch to batch supply of day oldchicks has discouraged entrepreneurs to give the break inthe poultry rearing cycle, considering the ground realityKVK has established poultry hatchery in the year 2010with incubation capacity of setter 15000 and 5000 capacityhatchers for regular supply of day old chicks to theupcoming farmers. Every 10-12 days interval hatching of3400-3800 of day old chicks was sold to the farmers.Beside this KVK has organized 23 farmers field school(FFS) in poultry farming for 460 upcoming poultry farmer. As a part of mandatory activities for assessment andrefinement of technologies KVK has conducted On farmtrials on giriraja poultry birds and after witnessingperformance and suitability of giriraja poultry breedamong the farmers. In convergence with ATMA KVK wasorganized Front line demonstrations on poultry farmingand FLDs of regular KVK mandate has also focused on lowinput technology component in poultry farming.

KVK has conducted large scale front linedemonstration for vertical spread of the technology amongthe poultry, farmers. Apart from this in backyard poultryrearing women's are very commonly observed and due tothis reason KVK has involved farm women and womenSHG in this activity. In poultry rearing mostly amount ofRs.6461728 is spent on purchasing of feed and medicine. Most of the farmer sold their bird after attaining 2.0 kg to2.50 kg at three to four months of age. The total live weightof the birds was around 124264 kg. Several farmers retainsome of their female birds for egg laying purpose also. Therefore the gross income generated after sale of bird wasRs.l,73,96, 960/- and after deduction of expenses incurredon feed, vaccine and medicine the net income earned wasRs.1,09,35,323/- with a B:C ratio of 1:l.59 and generatedemployment in the rural youths.

Since 2004 due to concentrated efforts and supportservices made available by KVK to poultry farmers hasencouraged to start 95 backyard poultry units in Washim andadjacent Buldana, Akola and Hingoli district. Mostlymarginal farmers are coming up to start poultry unit as anallied enterprises in addition to farm activities.
