2 JUNE 2016

Dear Member,

As we approach the end of another busy fiscal year, I would like to take this opportunity to express my heartfelt thanks to all of you, our loyal members of WTTW and WFMT, for making possible all of the quality content we produce and present, across all of our media platforms. If you happen to get an email, letter, or phone call with our fiscal year end appeal, I’ll hope you’ll consider supporting this special initiative at a very important time. Your continuing support is much appreciated.

This month on WTTW11 and wttw.com, you will find much that will inspire, entertain, and educate. In case you missed our live stream on May 20, you can watch as ten of the area’s most outstanding high school educators (and one school principal) receive this year’s Golden Apple Awards for Excellence in Teaching. Enjoy a wide variety of great music content, including a Great Performances tribute to folk legend Joan Baez for her 75th birthday; a fond look back at The Kingston Trio with the current members of the group; a 1990 concert from the four icons who make up the country supergroup The Highwaymen; a rousing and nostalgic show by local Chicago bands of the 1960s and ’70s, Cornerstones of Rock, taped at WTTW’s Grainger Studio; and a unique and fun performance by The Piano Guys at Red Rocks: A Soundstage Special Event.

Also this month, young detective Endeavour Morse returns for a third season, and we are pleased to present two exciting new drama series from the United Kingdom – The Tunnel and Dancing on the Edge. A revealing documentary explores the history of Arab-Americans and a three-part series delves into the story of The Greeks. The Interview Show with Mark Bazer continues on air (with its weekly premiere online at wttw.com/interviewshow), and be sure to visit wttw.com/10 to explore the rich digital content created for 10 that Changed America with Geoffrey Baer. Finally, as always, we bring you a variety of relevant content for LGBT Pride Month. There are many ways to watch – WTTW11, online at wttw.com/watch, and on your phone and streaming devices via our video app. Learn all of the ways you can watch us at wttw.com/anywhere.

On 98.7WFMT and wfmt.com, June ushers in a new season of live broadcasts from the Grant Park Music Festival: Carlos Kalmar and guest conductors lead the Grant Park Orchestra from Jay Pritzker Pavilion in Millennium Park and from the South Shore Cultural Center. Saturday afternoons this month bring more performances from Lyric Opera of Chicago: Wozzeck, The Merry Widow, Nabucco, and Der Rosenkavalier. And we have a new series of specials from the renowned Santa Fe Chamber Music Festival for Wednesday evenings: pianists Kiril Gerstein, Marc-André Hamelin, and Anne-Marie McDermott are among the artists featured in these wide-ranging concerts. You can partake in all of this anytime and anywhere you are on wfmt.com and via the new WFMT app (wfmt.com/app), where you’ll also find the latest fine arts news stories, quizzes, podcasts, interviews, social media posts, and more.

Again, as we look back on everything we have brought to our audiences and the local community over the past year, we hope you’ll take a moment to support WTTW and WFMT. Out of all of the entertainment options that are available to you, we are grateful you have chosen us.

Enjoy the summer!

Sincerely,

Dan SchmidtPresident & CEO

Screening: I Am for PeaceWTTW, in partnership with the Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events and

Perspectives Charter Schools, presents a free screening of the documentary I Am for Peace.Like so many of our cities, Chicago is

being torn apart by violence. Talk to the students at any school on the South and West Sides of the city, and almost every student will tell you that someone they love has been impacted by gun violence and knows someone who has been shot. But our young people are also a part of the solution. I Am for Peace shares the inspiring story of how students at Perspectives Charter Schools are taking lessons from the classroom to the streets to organize one of the largest student-led peace marches in the city’s modern-day history, and create a lasting movement for peace.

Immediately following the screening, there will be a panel discussion with questions and comments from the audience. To reserve your spot, visit wttw.com/events.

WFMT’s monthly live series, The PianoForte Salon Series, con-tinues its season of broadcasts, and you’re invited to be part of the audience! Join WFMT for a live performance and conversation with pianist Daniel Schlosberg performing Mozart, Ravel, and more.

Daniel Schlosberg has been described as an “expert pianist” (Boston Globe), and his performances have been praised for their “intellect and passion” (Washington Post). As a collaborative pianist, Tim Smith of the Baltimore Sun wrote: “Daniel Schlosberg was a model accompanist, bringing out the remarkable richness of the piano writing.”

Admission to this concert is free. For program information, visit pianofortefoundation.org.

But are these patterns innate, or are they shaped by the world around us? Awakening (Part 1 of 3) This episode traces events in Ireland and abroad leading to the preparations for the Rising. The themes and events covered include the rise of cultural nationalism, the re-emergence of the separatist physical force tradition, the contested traditions of nationalism and unionism, the rise of organized labor, the role of women, the role of Irish America, and the influence of the diaspora and interna-tional political movements.

EVENING

6:15 1916: The Irish Rebellion – Insurrection (Part 2 of 3) The story of the Rising itself; the way in which the clandestine and separatist Irish Republican Brotherhood infiltrated the Irish Volunteer Movement; the attempt to secure assistance from Britain’s enemy Germany; the arrest of Roger Casement and the botched gun-running off the coast of Ireland im-mediately before the Rising; the confusion surrounding the order and countermand for a call-up of the Irish Volunteers on Easter Sunday; British Intelligence awareness of what was planned, and an apparent lack of readiness to tackle what happened on Easter Monday.

7:30 1916: The Irish Rebellion – When Myth and History Rhyme (Part 3 of 3) The third and final part of the

series details the aftermath and response to the Rising in Ireland and abroad. The initial reaction of many Dubliners to the Rising gave way to a grudging respect that grew exponentially with the British response. The rebellion, while ostensibly a failure, created the conditions for a national revolution and changed the course of Irish history.

Lyric Opera: Encore BroadcastsThis month’s sequence of rebroadcasts from Lyric Opera’s just-concluded 2015-16 season begin with Alban Berg’s Wozzeck. Critic John Von Rhein talked with the production’s director, Sir David McVicar, shortly before the work opened last fall. The article pointed out that Wozzeck is a universal symbol of oppression; he’s a soldier mistreated by his superiors and betrayed by the woman he loves. McVicar relates the opera to Berg’s own experiences during World War I and “his need to tell a story about the dehumanizing, brutalizing effect of war.” In the weeks following Wozzeck, operatic tragedy gives way to ancient history and 19th-century romance, as we hear Renée Fleming in the title role of Franz Lehár’s operetta The Merry Widow and Amanda Majeski as the beautiful protagonist of Richard Strauss’ Der Rosenkavalier. Rounding out the schedule is Giuseppe Verdi’s first major success, Nabucco, freely based on the Biblical account of the Israelites’ Babylonian captivity. Nabucco is the source of one of Verdi’s most famous choruses, Va Pensiero, also called Chorus of the Hebrew Slaves.

Chicago Symphony and Salonen in RavelKate Royal and Eric Owens were among the soloists when the CSO presented Ravel’s fantasy opera L’Enfant et les Sortilèges (The Child and the Enchantments). Guest conductor Esa-Pekka Salonen led the performance as part of a mostly-Ravel concert during the orchestra’s recent festival of French music. The opera was premiered in 1926 in Monte Carlo, with Victor De Sabata conducting and choreography by George Balanchine. Its librettist was the French novelist Colette, best remembered today as the author of Gigi. A misbehaving child breaks his belongings and wounds a pet. Toys, teacups, animals, and even trees unite to accuse him, and he feels isolated and rejected until he tries to help the animal he injured. The “enchantments” then decide to help him become reconciled with his mother. Joining the orchestra and soloists for this performance are the Chicago Symphony Chorus and the Anima Young Singers of Greater Chicago.

Mustard’s Retreat on FolkstageThe duo known as Mustard’s Retreat, singer-songwriters and storytellers David Tamulevich and Michael Hough, have been performing together since the 1970s. Tamulevich says they took their name from a combination of an old fiddle tune called Bonaparte’s Retreat and a guitarist colleague called Nancy Mustard. He wrote Mustard’s Retreat for her, and it became the duo’s name: “It’s original, it’s different,” he says. Rich Warren welcomes the pair to a return visit on Folkstage this month, live from Levin Studio.

Collectors’ Corner: Spotlighting Niels GadeHenry Fogel will devote two Collectors’ Corner broadcasts to the music of Niels Gade (1817-1890). Born in Copenhagen, he played violin in the Danish Royal Orchestra before turning his attention to composition. His works were championed by Mendelssohn, and he succeeded his mentor as conductor of the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra. He’s not well remembered outside Denmark, but his works include symphonies, tone poems, a violin concerto, copious piano music, string quartets and quintets, and cantatas written for Britain’s Birmingham Festival. Henry will sample these varied works, plus some Gade songs recorded by the Danish tenor Aksel Schiotz.

Opening Night at Millennium Park: Grant Park Music Festival 2016Artistic director and principal conductor Carlos Kalmar opens the 2016 Grant Park Music Festival on a truly festive note by leading the Grant Park Orchestra in Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition. Fabio Bidini and Andrew von Oeyen are the guest pianists for the Two-Piano Concerto by Francis Poulenc. This 1932 composition, premiered by the prestigious International Society for Contemporary Music, is a little reminiscent of Ravel’s solo-piano concerto completed the same year, but Poulenc claimed specifically that his inspiration was from the piano concerti of Mozart and Saint-Saens. It’s a virtuosic piece for the two soloists, who play virtually without pause throughout. The concert will open with American music, Barber’s second Essay for Orchestra. Dave Schwan hosts WFMT’s live broadcast from Pritzker Pavilion.

More from GPMF: Kalmar and PohjonenThe young Finnish pianist Juho Pohjonen will make his festival debut tonight in Chopin’s Piano Concerto #2. To open the program Carlos Kalmar has chosen Rimsky-Korsakov’s colorful Symphony #2, subtitled Antar, full of the brilliant orchestral effects for which the composer is famous. To conclude will be a piece of new American music, a work that its composer, Christopher Rouse, intended as a concert-opener. It’s called Thunderstuck, and it was inspired by Rouse’s continuing love for rock ‘n’ roll. He says: “It’s all in fun.” Thunderstuck was commissioned by the New York Philharmonic and premiered by that orchestra in 2014.
