Melodic Fusion Guitar Part 2 - Playing Concept Speaking with an Instrument or in this case is your electric guitar is MUST be the same when you do a conversation. For example if you meet with new people(s) the first words that you will say is “Hi, what is your name?” or “Excuse me, may I ….?” or etc. that phrases will naturally flow because you’ve learn a conversation about “meet and greeting” or spontaneously flow because your head ask you to do so. In musical case, is exactly the same like you do the conversation in your daily live. For example if you already knew the C Major modes, for instant when you hear iim7-V7-IMaj7 progression you’ll play D Dorian scale with iim7 chord, Mixolydian scale with V7 chord and Ionian Scale with IMaj7 chord. That combination of Modal scales with the given chord will create a smooth and naturally phrases. But think about if you don’t even know the C Major modes or the given chords, you will start to find what is that note, and then try to dictating each note by note, just like speaking with baby. Or if you’re an Expert guitarist that can play faster than Yngwie Malmsteen by learning all of his licks. Even if you do so I dare you’re can never be the same or better then him if you don’t understand the musical context in your playing just like his does. That make an expert musicians or in this case smart musicians seem to be so soulful when we see they play. Let’s stop to think that licks is a trick because for the owner it is a phrases of their words that can’t be describe by words. So then they start to take every notes which is available as a Diction to build a phrase. Here is the simple analogy, we all have a vocal cord. That is our instrument for voicing. But it need the air to make it vibrating so then the lungs bring it in. When the air came in and hit the vocal cord, it will start to vibrate. Finally your words will come out. In musical context, the air is the theory or materials, the lungs is your spirit to learn the musical context, the vocal Chord is your instrument, the vibrating of vocal Chord is your progression and the voice is your melody or phrases. And the point is, start to build up your theory in musical context. That will give you so much diction and you can arrange them to build your own words so then you will have your own phrases (lick).
