Formulating a Research Problem

Page 2: MELJUN CORTES RESEARCH Lectures Triangulation Research

The Research Problem

• Conducted because of a problem that needs to be addressed, question to be answered, and knowledge gap that should be filled.

• Common mistake is to state titles then try to identify the components of the title.

• Title can be reworded even after the conduct of the study, but the problem cannot be changed. A change in the problem means a change in the entire study.

SMART

• Five characteristics to consider as bases in stating problems or objectives– Specific– Measurable– Attainable– Realistic– Time-bound

Page 4: MELJUN CORTES RESEARCH Lectures Triangulation Research

Problem Statement

• Stated clearly in question form• Should imply possibilities of empirical testing• Statement of the problem can be a

combination of descriptive and inferential questions.

Page 5: MELJUN CORTES RESEARCH Lectures Triangulation Research

Problem Statement

Descriptive questions – elicits responses explained through means, frequencies, ranks, SD and other descriptive statistical tools

Inferential questions – link together one or more descriptive questions by asking differences or relationship among the variables found in the descriptive questions.

Problem Statement (Sample1)

The study is an attempt to answer the following questions:1.What is the computer literacy level of the respondents in terms of the following indicators?:

a. Number of hours of computer trainingsb. Number of computer software usedc. Score in the test on computer technology

Page 7: MELJUN CORTES RESEARCH Lectures Triangulation Research

Problem Statement (Sample1)

2. Is the computer literacy level of the respondents related to the following characteristics?:

a. Ageb. Genderc. Length of service

Page 8: MELJUN CORTES RESEARCH Lectures Triangulation Research

Problem Statement (Sample2)

1. Is there a difference in the income derived from the livelihood projects between program beneficiaries and non-beneficiaries?

2. Is there a relationship between the adequacy of program inputs with the expected outputs of the program?

Page 9: MELJUN CORTES RESEARCH Lectures Triangulation Research

• In statistical analysis, difference and relationship serve the same purpose because if the program beneficiaries and non-beneficiaries do not differ in income, it means that the variable income from livelihood projects is not related to the classification of the respondents whether beneficiaries or non-beneficiaries.

• In natural sciences (and in applied sciences), research problems are stated in infinitive form as objectives of the study.

(Example)The study will be conducted to determine the

growth and yield response of hybrid rice to different levels of nitrogen fertilizer. Specifically, the study aims to:

Page 11: MELJUN CORTES RESEARCH Lectures Triangulation Research

1. Determine the agronomic characteristics of PSB Rc-72H Mestizo hybrid rice in terms of the following parameters:

A. Growth componentsa. Number of days to floweringb. Number of days to maturityc. Plant height at maturity

B. Yield componentsa. Average number of productive tillers per hillb. Average length of panicles at maturityc. Average number of grains per panicled. Average number of filled grains per paniclee. Percent of filled grains per paniclef. Average weight of 1000 seedsg. Average grain yield per hectare

2. Find out which of the levels of nitrogen fertilizer gives the highest yield in tons per hectare

Criteria for Choosing a Topic

• Importance and urgency• Interesting• Researchability• Relevance and moral implication• Budgetary and time requirements• Novelty

Page 13: MELJUN CORTES RESEARCH Lectures Triangulation Research

Sources of Research Problem

• Researcher’s specialization• Curiosity and creative ideas of the researcher• Recommendations from theses; dissertations

and published journals• Research and development thrusts of R&D

institutions

Page 14: MELJUN CORTES RESEARCH Lectures Triangulation Research

Formulating Research Hypothesis

• Educated guess• Conjectural statement about relationship

between two or more variables• Needed when the research objective or

problem statement calls for determining relationship between variables

Page 15: MELJUN CORTES RESEARCH Lectures Triangulation Research

Is the computer literacy level of the respondents related to the following characteristics?:a.Ageb.Genderc.Length of service

What is the relationship between the computer literacy level and each of the following characteristics of the respondents?:a.Ageb.Genderc.Length of service

Page 16: MELJUN CORTES RESEARCH Lectures Triangulation Research

Is there a relationship between the computer literacy level and each of the following characteristics of the respondents?:a.Ageb.Genderc.Length of service

Are the following variables associated with the computer literacy level of the respondents?:a.Ageb.Genderc.Length of service

Page 17: MELJUN CORTES RESEARCH Lectures Triangulation Research

Hypothesis• Types– Null Hypothesis (H0)– Research (alternative) Hypothesis (H1 or Ha )

Is there a relationship between the computer literacy level and each of the following characteristics of the respondents?:

a. Ageb. Genderc. Length of service

Page 18: MELJUN CORTES RESEARCH Lectures Triangulation Research

Hypothesis (Sample)

• Null Hypothesis

There is no relationship between the computer literacy level and each of the following characteristics of the respondents:

a. Ageb. Genderc. Length of service

Page 19: MELJUN CORTES RESEARCH Lectures Triangulation Research

Hypothesis (Sample)

• Research (alternative) Hypothesis

There is relationship between the computer literacy level and each of the following characteristics of the respondents:

a. Ageb. Genderc. Length of service
