“Why wait around at home for hours for tradespeople who can’t give an exact arrival time or tell
you how long the job will take?”
With a background in occupational therapy, Natalie is experienced in recommending home
modifications for people dealing with physical impairments.
“This has provided me with a solid background in dealing with tradespeople, architects and local
councils,” she said.
As a business owner, Natalie said being your own boss definitely has its upside.
“I have the freedom to control things and can set my own goals. I also have the ability to be flexible
in how I work and am able to devote more time to having a balanced lifestyle.”

■ Losing the keys to the house is onething, but it’s another thing altogetherto lose the house as well – plus a wholecommunity of hundreds of farms, trad-ing markets and even palaces andtemples that once spread over 400square kilometres.
Yet that’s exactly what happenedwhen the old Cambodian capital ofAngkor was sacked by the raidingAyutthaya people of then-Siam (nowThailand) in 1431, and Angkor’s en-tire population fled 315km to the safetyof what is now Phnom Penh.
Behind them they left what hadbeen the world’s largest pre-industrialcity whose kings influenced a vastarea extending as far afield as Viet-nam, China and the Bay of Bengal.
But surprisingly Angkor’s raidershad little interest in occupying the cityafter their attack and retreated backto their homeland, leaving the now-abandoned community of timberbuildings – that included Angkor’spalace that was of wooden construc-tion – to decay into the jungle in thedamp of the tropical humidity and sea-sonal monsoons.
All that is, except for a vast templecomplex that had somehow been builtof stone, and which was surroundedby a moat which provided a ring ofprotection from the encroachingjungle.
For centuries Angkor lay forgot-ten in the jungle. A few wanderingBuddhist monks stumbled upon thevast temples as they sought-out junglecommunities for conversion from the

Hindu to their own faith, and based ontheir tales it wasn’t long before manymyths and legends began to ariseabout “the lost temple in the jungle.”
One of the first western monks tosee the temples was the PortugueseAntonio da Magdalena in 1586, andhe was so astonished at what he’dstumbled upon that he wrote: “It is ofsuch extraordinary construction thatit is not possible to describe it with apen… it is like no other building in theworld (and has) towers and decora-tion and all the refinements which thehuman genius can conceive of.” But it was in 1860 that the Frenchexplorer Henri Mouhot came upon thetemple, and it was his reports on hisreturn to France that led to a wholenew interest – particularly after hewrote romantically for a French news-paper that “the lost temple rivals thatof Solomon and (was) erected bysome ancient Michelangelo…” Coincidentally the French govern-ment adopted Cambodia as a protec-torate in 1863 and following the ex-traordinary world-wide interest inMouhot’s reports about the Angkortemples, decided upon a restorationprogram for the jungle complex whosefirst buildings were created in AD802. That restoration work still contin-ues today on the more-than 100temples that make-up the 81ha com-plex of Angkor Wat (Angkor meansCity and Wat means Temple,) andwhich draw more than one-millionvisitors a year. There are few restrictions onwhere visitors may roam, but those inthe know say it’s impossible to fullyunderstand the complex and its ex-traordinary architectural detail with-out the help of a well-versed localguide. And it’s also worth getting awayfrom the actual stone temple complexand taking a bit of a jungle walk intowhere the original city of Angkor oncesurrounded the temples, as whilst allthe buildings have long gone it’s stillpossible to find outlines of some ofthe original streets. As well, the neighbouring town ofSiem Reap that’s developed on theback of Angkor Wat is a bustling hiveof activity and a fascinating secondface of this part of Cambodia. It’s gotplentiful accommodation from simpleguesthouses to five-star resorts, andgood-value restaurants and livelynightlife activities are not hard to find– particularly along the aptly-namedPub Street.
And a must-do is a cold drink on ahot day in the classic art deco bar ofthe Foreign Correspondents’ Clubnear the Royal Palace, a formergovernor’s mansion overlooking theSiem Reap River and now part of theluxury FCC Angkor Hotel.
