Dear Parents,

NEW PEDAGOGIES FOR DEEP LEARNING – A GLOBAL PARNERSHIP

I was fortunate to attend a presentation in Melbourne last Wednesday by Michael Fullan, professor

emeritus at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education at the University of Toronto. He discussed

New Pedagogies for Deep Learning; a global partnership focused on implementing deep learning goals

across whole education systems to enable new pedagogies accelerated by technology.

PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

Issue 16 Fortnight ending October 31st , 2014

New Pedagogies for Deep Learning engages students across the globe to develop skills to be lifelong

learners; creative, connected and collaborative problem solvers who can successfully participate and

innovate in our increasingly connected world. This is 21st century learning; this is the learning that will

best prepare our students for the modern world. I was pleased to hear that we are addressing this change

in learning at HEPS. Our teachers have been working throughout the year on changing ‘The World in

Which we Live’ units to ‘Inquiry Learning’ ‘throughlines’ that will operate across the levels, concepts

with open ended questioning to promote student engagement and the application to real world situations.

Also as we use our computer technologies more effectively as tools for learning the students are

obviously becoming more engaged and producing more spectacular work. The Deep Learning

Competencies Framework that we expect to promote are: Character, citizenship, collaboration,

communication, creativity and critical thinking; you can see that these are vital competencies that will

support our students to become successful participants of our world.

FASHIONS ON THE FIELD

I love the HEPS community particularly when everyone comes together to share a

special day such as Fashions on the Field. It really brings us all together with a focus

that celebrates a highlight of Melbourne, a marvellous city! The students looked

superb in their cup finery or as bookies, jockeys, horses and other imaginative

interpretations of the day. Well done and thank you for being involved. Even the roses

at the front of the school bloomed radiantly to celebrate the event.

THE MAROONDAH FESTIVAL – 9TH NOVEMBER

Many of our parents and staff have been working extremely hard in preparation for the two

stalls at the Maroondah Festival. As you know we, HEPS, will be managing two stalls, a

lolly stall and the interactive Bee Stall. Several of our school captains, House/Vice House

Captains will pilot the interactive stall, walking and talking people through the stall with

the message of how important are the bees to the wellbeing of our food supply and beauty

of our world. Proceeds from the lolly stall will contribute to the fundraising focus this

year, the playground.

HEPS HAS A HEALTHY CANTEEN

Congratulations to Mrs Vicki Allan who scored perfect marks when the health inspector

appeared at our canteen. The final comment from the inspector was that she wished that

everybody was as organised and clean as Vicki. The premise was perfect! Well done,

Vicki and your trusty roster of parent helpers.

WELCOME BACK MRS FRASER/DAWKINS AND MRS CANDICE BUSH

Welcome back to Candice who is still the doting mother but is working in her integration role one day a

week this term. Welcome to Mrs Sue Fraser who has returned from her leave. She returns as a

newlywed, Mrs Sue Dawkins. Sue will remain Mrs Fraser for the students to prevent confusion. We

congratulate her on the happy news; Sue will support the school in various roles/responsibilities rather

than return to LOTE. This should provide consistency for our students and Ms Sutton who is loving

LOTE and is able to provide our students feedback on their learning this year.

THE CHAPLAINCY PROGRAM AT HEPS

It is our practice to assess the National School Chaplaincy and Student Welfare Program; it’s that time of

the year again. If you have an opinion or your child has used the program and you have some feedback

please let me know. You may wish to fill out the short grid below and forward to the office. Thank you

WORLD TEACHERS’ DAY: 31st OCTOBER

Thank you to the many parents who baked and provided tasty treats for morning tea today. Many of our

staff were also delightfully surprised by the complimentary words, gifts, cards and great food as a show of

appreciation for the efforts and value acknowledged by their students and parents.

LIBRARY NEWS – October 2014 HEPS WRITE YOUR OWN BOOK COMPETITION I would like to thank all those wonderful HEPS students who participated in the Write Your Own Book competition this year. We had hundreds of entries and I know that many of you spent hours working on your books, which was obvious from the calibre of entries we received. Thank you to all those parents and teachers who encouraged their children to participate and supported their efforts. It was very difficult this year to make a decision on the winner in each category but I would like to say congratulations to you all – you are all WINNERS!

We certainly have many budding authors and illustrators in our midst! As is the nature of competition, however, we can only have one winner in each category and the winners are: Prep: Reuben Foundation D Grade 1: Noah 1B Grade 2: Sienna 2D Grade 3: Breanna 3B Grade 4: Meg 4C Grade 5: Tahlia 5B Grade 6: Amy 6A and Juliette 6A We have also decided to give out a number of encouragement awards. These students went the extra mile in preparing an interesting and well thought out entry and showed much potential. The winners of the encouragement award are: Prep: Miranda Foundation A Grade 1; Lily 1A Grade 2: Flynn 2C Grade 3: Jaspar 3A Grade 4: Mitchell 4B Grade 5: Lucy 5A Congratulations to all who entered – you did an amazing job! The winners and encouragement award winner’s books are on the table opposite the Library for everyone to read. All the other amazing books will be on display in the Library. Parents please feel free to come and browse the books and see our students amazing work! LIBRARY STOCKTAKE – ADVANCE WARNING! Our library will be closed for stocktake from Monday 8 December. All books must be returned to the Library by Monday 1st of December so that they can all be shelved and ready for the count the following week. The last day for borrowing will be Friday the 21st of November. Overdue notices will go home regularly between now and then for those books that have not been returned prior to 1 December. LIBRARY NEWS

During the past 6 weeks, a group of Grade 5 girls have been involved in a program called “STARS”, a social skills program which explores the power for good or bad that we exert over others through our use of:

words, body language, forgiveness, listening, empathy and being thankful.

SOME FACTS that the children have learnt:

1. The power of our words to hurt or heal. A tongue has no bones but it is strong enough to break a heart. Be careful with your words. 2. Psychologists have discovered that what distinguishes good and poor relationships is not how their friends respond to their bad news, but how they respond to their good news. This fact was tested out through an example of “telling a friend you have just won a sports prize!” 3. Psychologists have discovered that happiness will last longer, up to 6 months, as we are grateful for things!

Multi Age Tabloid

Parent Helpers needed!! On Wednesday 3

rd December, students will be involved in an all-day Multi Age Sports Day, participating

in a range of sporting activities and games. We would love a few parent volunteers to help us with our

day by assisting with certain activities. The activities will commence at 9:20am and will finish at 3:20pm.

We only need a small number of parent helpers, so it will be first in, first served. Parent helpers will be

notified if needed.

THANK YOU HEPS FAMILIES On the 24

th of September my family and I went to an orphanage in Manila called Bahay Tuluyan

Philippines. It was a great experience and they showed us all the work they are doing to help kids living

in poverty. We helped for the day at the drop in centre and before we went the kids in our grades gave us

donations to take to the Philippines. We want to say a BIG thank you to all the awesome families that

donated toothbrushes, toothpaste, hairbrushes, soap, face washers and money. Also thank you to our

fantabulous teachers Mrs Cullinane, Mrs Ruck, Miss Urban and Mrs Frigo who donated and organised all

the kids to help us. The children at the orphanage appreciated all of your donations and will benefit a lot

from your generosity. We learnt a lot about kids living in poverty and we learnt that our friends at HEPS

are very thoughtful and generous.

LIVE WELL WITH ASTHMA EDUCATION

SESSION

The Asthma Foundation of Victoria is holding a FREE asthma

education session for you to attend! This asthma education

session will assist with you or your child's asthma

management as you learn all about asthma signs, symptoms,

triggers, medications and what to do in the event of an

emergency. We will also be happy to answer all of your

asthma related questions on the night.

The one hour free session will be taking place at The Asthma

Foundation of Victoria and we would love to see you there.
