The future is uncertain and ours for the givingI’ve been in e-learning for many years now. So long in fact that I can’t remember. I’ve worked across vocational education, higher education and corporate eLearning environments. I’ve also taught face-to-face higher education and online live distance learning. I’ve contributed to the development of eLearning content for information technology, horticulture, photography, sales, supply chain management, veterinary science; chemistry and they are just the ones I can remember. I’ve written code, designed databases, developed website interfaces, lead teams, written grant applications, presented at conferences, received group awards, and co-authored research. I’ve had some great successes and some spectacular failures. And at the rate that things are changing, I feel like I know so little.

The reality is, instructional design and the role of the instructional designer are demanding - even begging - for change. Traditional market forces such as target learners and learning design still affect us. But now there are many other factors to take into account such as designing for touch, incorporating ideas from disciplines such as neuroscience and marketing, rethinking design for new delivery models, evaluating toolsets, and designing for the new ways that people are learning.

If we look at our history as a civilization, the features of pre-industrial society according to Wikipedia are limited production, limited division of labour, limited variation of social classes, parochialism and limited communications. Sound like anything you know? I would argue that the web has placed us in a post-industrial era of learning and our craft has the opportunity to truly engage learners and prepare them for a future in which they see themselves living. As instructional designers, it’s time for us to be at the forefront of the change that’s happening around us or risk being engulfed by it.

What are we going to do? It’s time for us to be the revolution of learning.
