The University of Arizona Mel and Enid Zuckerman College of Public Health was established in January 2000 and accredited by the Council on Education for Public Health in 2003. The UA Zuckerman College of Public Health brought together many existing projects, programs and people from other areas of the University and our community. Thus, our faculty have extensive experience in teaching, research and community outreach in Arizona, across the U.S., and internationally. In its short existence, the UA Zuckerman College of Public Health has distinguished itself for its outstanding community-based research and practice projects and for its focus on eliminating health disparities, especially within the populations of the Southwest. A Phoenix campus of the College of Public Health was opened in 2010, an online MPH degree was opened in 2015, and an online Bachelor of Science program was opened in 2016.
The College is organized in academic departments that reflect core public health disciplines. Currently, 69 faculty members have their primary academic appointments in the departments of the UA Zuckerman College of Public Health -- the Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics, the Department of Health Promotion Sciences, and the Department of Community, Environment and Policy.
What is Public Health?
Public health is the science and art of protecting and improving the health of communities through education, promotion of healthy lifestyles, and research for disease and injury prevention. Public health programs promote health by providing prevention curricula and services, and developing policies and laws that protect communities. Public health involves the national, state and local systems that detect disease and respond to increases in disease risk. Public health also incorporates preparedness in areas ranging from pandemics to bioterrorism to natural disasters and at every level, from local to global. Public health conducts applied research to develop improved prevention and health promotion strategies. Public health education focuses on developing the workforce responsible for leading public health programs.

18Academic Programs of the College
The Bachelor of Science (BS), with a major in Public Health, admitted its first students in fall 2009 having replaced a previously offered Health Education Bachelor’s degree. The BS in Public Health offers a broad based public health curriculum with undergraduate track options in health promotion, health systems theory and practice, environmental and occupational health, and global health. The College has graduated 1205 undergraduate students.
An Online Bachelor of Science (BS) with a major in Public Health opened in fall 2016 with a track in Public Health Practice. The Online BS program anticipates graduating its first students in fall 2018.
The Master of Public Health Program (MPH) offers a Master of Public Health degree with 9 areas of concentration: Biostatistics, Environmental and Occupational Health, Epidemiology, Family and Child Health, Health Behavior Health Promotion, Health Services Administration in Phoenix and Tucson, One Health, Public Health Policy and Management, and Public Health Practice in Phoenix. The MPH Program has graduated 1678 students since 1993.
The College’s Online Master of Public Health Program (MPH) with concentrations in Applied Epidemiology, Health Promotion, and Health Services Administration was initiated in fall of 2015. The Online MPH Program has graduated 66 students.
The Biostatistics MS and PhD Programs prepares students who have demonstrated excellence in mathematics and the sciences to become research biostatisticians in academia, industry, or government. The Biostatistics Program has graduated 21 MS students and 3 PhD Student since its inception in 2007.
The Environmental Health Sciences MS and PhD Programs admitted its first students in fall 2010. This program was developed for graduate students wishing to study topics related to climate change, water quality and quantity and their impacts on health, or any environmental health issue. The Environmental Health Sciences Program has graduated 14 MS and 8 PhD students.
The Epidemiology MS and PhD Programs involve multi-disciplinary collaborations among program faculty and university departments and state and national health institutions provide classroom and community training opportunities. The Epidemiology Program has produced 47 MS graduates and 50 PhD graduates.
Established in 2014, the PhD in Health Behavior Health Promotion (HBHP) is offered by the Department of Health Promotion Sciences. The doctoral program offers a diverse and challenging curriculum that addresses health behavior health promotion theory, knowledge and skills in working on health issues within the diverse communities of the Southwest U.S., mixed qualitative/quantitative research methods, statistics, and grant development skills. The Health Behavior Health Promotion PhD Program has graduated 2 students.
For the student who has a Master of Public Health degree or its equivalent, the Doctor of Public Health (DrPH) Program is an advanced, professional degree program focused on developing future leaders in public health practice. There are two major concentration areas of study available to DrPH candidates: Maternal and Child Health and Public Health Policy and Management. The DrPH Program has graduated 29 students since its inception in fall of 2007.

18Delta Omega
Delta Omega is the honorary society for graduate studies in public health. Membership in Delta Omega reflects the dedication of an individual to quality in the field of public health and to protection and advancement of the health of all people. Election to membership in Delta Omega is intended not only to recognize merit, but also to encourage further excellence in and devotion to public health work. Up to 10% of the graduating student body, who must be in the upper 25% academically, may be nominated.
Other categories of Delta Omega membership include: alumni whose work in the prac-tice of public health serves as a model for future graduates of the school; faculty, based on a review of their work in the field; and an honorary category for persons possessing exceptional qualifications and those who have attained meritorious distinction in the field of public health.
Since Delta Omega’s establishment at the Johns Hopkins University School of Public Health in 1924, the meaning and scope of public health have broadened tremendously. While still seriously concerned with problems of environmental sanitation and communicable disease control, public health action has come to embrace all aspects of health and disease in populations. These include the planning, organization, and support of health promotion, disease prevention, and medical care. Basic to modern public health are the social sciences as well as the natural sciences—both in the United States and internationally.
In fall 2001, the Alpha Nu Chapter of Delta Omega was established at the UA Zuckerman College of Public Health. The Chapter has 259 members.

To aid the University of Arizona Mel and Enid College of Public Health staff and faculty with outreach and recruitment, the Office of Student Services and Alumni Affairs initiated a student Ambassador program in 2011. A diverse group of undergraduate and graduate student Ambassadors now represent our BS, MPH, MS, PhD, and DrPH programs, as well as every area of study within the College. Student Ambassadors communicate with prospective and admitted students; staff tables at local and national events; serve on student panels; assist the College with our social media presence; provide outreach to campus clubs and organizations; and generally represent the College of Public Health as public health students and professionals.
