NT ‘power’ law backed By MEAGAN DILLON A SENATE inquiry has backed a Bill to give the Territory greater power to make its own laws, in- cluding euthanasia and same-sex marriage, without interference from Canberra. The committee, headed by NT Senator Trish Crossin, released its recommendation to support the Bill on Wednesday. Ms Crossin said more than 200 submissions were made to the in- quiry and about 95 per cent of them supported the legislation. ‘‘I don’t see any reason to not support it,’’ she said. She said the Territory has a right to have ‘‘confidence in the competence of Parliament’’. ‘‘Parliament should be able to govern . . . without interference by a federal minister,’’ she said. The Australian Government an- nounced it would back the Bill — drafted by Green’s leader Bob Brown — in March. But support diminished and the matter was referred to a Senate in- quiry. Ms Crossin said her sup- port ‘‘accurately reflected’’ the individual submissions made to the inquiry. She said Chief Minister Paul Henderson and former chief min- ister Marshall Perron both made submissions in favour of the Bill. In his submission, Mr Hender- son said he supported the Bill be- cause it represented a step towards statehood. Ms Crossin said if Mr Brown’s Bill was passed, the Territory could introduce euthanasia legis- lation. She said if euthanasia laws were passed by the NT Parlia- ment, a federal minister could not go to the Governor-General to get that legislation overturned. But she said the Bill couldn’t prevent someone introducing legislation into Federal Parlia- ment to override it — similar to Kevin Andrew’s Private Members Bill that overturned the Territ- ory’s euthanasia laws in 1997. Royce And Sue Jackson will drive around Darwin to map out roads, landscapes and markings next week. Darwin mapped from 4WD rooftop TERRITORY roads, landscapes and markings will be mapped out using five cameras perched on the roof of a four-wheel-drive. The 4WD — named Brumby — will be driven by Brisbane couple Royce and Sue Jackson. Mr Jackson said it would be the best way to explore the Territory. ‘‘We love that we’re a part of mapping this great country,’’ he said. The ‘‘data capture 4WD’’ will be cruising around the streets of Darwin mapping the road net- work for Whereis — which col- lects data for GPS systems and iPhone apps — from Monday. Whereis general manager Fred Curtis said the 4WD would help Australians navigate their way through Darwin.
