NT ‘power’law backedBy MEAGAN DILLON
A SENATE inquiry has backed aBill to give the Territory greaterpower to make its own laws, in-cluding euthanasia and same-sexmarriage, without interferencefrom Canberra.
The committee, headed by NTSenator Trish Crossin, releasedits recommendation to supportthe Bill on Wednesday.
Ms Crossin said more than 200submissions were made to the in-quiry and about 95 per cent ofthem supported the legislation.
‘‘I don’t see any reason to notsupport it,’’ she said.
She said the Territory has a
right to have ‘‘confidence in thecompetence of Parliament’’.
‘‘Parliament should be able togovern . . . without interferenceby a federal minister,’’ she said.
The Australian Government an-nounced it would back the Bill —drafted by Green’s leader BobBrown — in March.
But support diminished and thematter was referred to a Senate in-quiry. Ms Crossin said her sup-port ‘‘accurately reflected’’ theindividual submissions made tothe inquiry.
She said Chief Minister PaulHenderson and former chief min-ister Marshall Perron both madesubmissions in favour of the Bill.
In his submission, Mr Hender-son said he supported the Bill be-cause it represented a steptowards statehood.
Ms Crossin said if Mr Brown’sBill was passed, the Territorycould introduce euthanasia legis-lation. She said if euthanasia lawswere passed by the NT Parlia-ment, a federal minister could notgo to the Governor-General to getthat legislation overturned.
But she said the Bill couldn’tprevent someone introducinglegislation into Federal Parlia-ment to override it — similar toKevin Andrew’s Private MembersBill that overturned the Territ-ory’s euthanasia laws in 1997.
Royce And Sue Jackson will drive around Darwin to map out roads, landscapes and markings next week.
Darwin mapped from 4WD rooftopTERRITORY roads, landscapesand markings will be mapped outusing five cameras perched on theroof of a four-wheel-drive.
The 4WD — named Brumby —will be driven by Brisbane coupleRoyce and Sue Jackson.
Mr Jackson said it would be thebest way to explore the Territory.
‘‘We love that we’re a part ofmapping this great country,’’ hesaid. The ‘‘data capture 4WD’’ willbe cruising around the streets ofDarwin mapping the road net-
work for Whereis — which col-lects data for GPS systems andiPhone apps — from Monday.
Whereis general manager FredCurtis said the 4WD would helpAustralians navigate their waythrough Darwin.
