These two innovative proposals are based on the SpeedDream Design Concept, a new approach to reinvigorate the think-

ing, performance and creative styling of mod-ern yachts and to breathe a new life into some of the human’s oldest traditions – sailing.

In the annals of US sailing history no yacht comes close to the iconic symbolism of Schooner America. In 1851 the newly built

yacht set sail for England to showcase Yan-kee boatbuilding skills, and it was a memora-ble race around the Isle of Wight that forever changed history. The sleek America handily beat the British fleet prompting a famous re-ply to Queen Victoria’s query about who came second; “There is no second your Majesty.”

The 100 Guinea Cup that was awarded for winning became one of the most sought after trophies in sporting history and to

this day hundreds of millions of dollars are spent in pursuit of the Americas Cup.

With a nod to the stylish and graceful lines that designers George Steers and Co drew for the famous schoon-

er, Vlad Murnikov has recreated a thoroughly modern yet completely distinct version in a design called mxAmerica. “We are taking the glorious days of the past and adding a modern twist to retain the boat’s elegance while dra-matically increasing its performance. Where the gaffs once hung to increase sail power, square headed mainsails bridge between tra-ditional and modern in a quantum leap of sail handling ability and performance.”

The same creativity has been intro-duced to the Super Yacht market. While this area of the sailing industry

has grown exponentially, there has been a distinct lack of imaginative thought and the slab sided, lumbering behemoths that grace our waterfronts are an indication that lots

of money does not necessarily mean lots of innovation; un-

til now.
