E. Coli Outbreak: Cases Likely to Increase Worldwide!! “Very large and Very severe”
A recent deadly E. coli (EHEC) outbreak in Europe is expected to be worsening in coming days, and there is a great possibility that it will spread worldwide, where the outbreak has shown itself to be spreading geographically as well.
EHEC produces toxins, known as verotoxins or Shiga-like toxins (STEC O104) because of their similarity to the toxins produced by Shigella dysenteriae. The EHEC strain may cause hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS).
The prevention of EHEC outbreak must be based on good hygienic practices and control of the contamination of foods by biological and chemical hazards. This can be achieved most effectively through the application of food safety assurance programmes (GAP, GMP), based on the principles of the (HACCP) system.
Recent publication in the International Herald Tribune (June 29, 2011) showed that a certain report by the European Food Safety Authority confirmed that sprouts grown from fenugreek seeds imported from Egypt in 2009 and 2010 “are implicated in both outbreaks.” But it added that “there is still much uncertainty about whether this is truly the common cause of the infections” because tests on the seeds had not yet found any of the deadly E. coli, a rare strain known as O104:H4. Food safety experts say, however, that the bacteria can contaminate one seed in thousands and that it is very difficult to isolate in seed samples!!!
Identification of E. coli O104 can be done by using selective media specific for E.coli 0104, by serotyping with K and O antisera and PCR Techniques, ONLY Visit our website at www.mefosa.net to check all the materials related to identifying E.coli and other microorganisms. Moreover, MEFOSA recently can support you in the sequencing analysis of whole genome of each microorganism.
