What are RPO and RTO?
How are they different?
Understanding RTO and RPO
• Recovery Point Objective• The amount of data that you will loose
if you need to restore from a backup
Understanding RTO and RPO
• Recovery Point Objective• The amount of data that you will loose
if you need to restore from a backup
• Recovery Time Objective• The amount of time it will take to
restore your application and reload
data so that users can access it.
The lower the RPO/RTO the more $’s

• Recovery Time Objective• The amount of time it will take to

Understanding RTO and RPO
• Recovery Point Objective• Reduced by decreasing the time
between data protection events.
Traditionally not achievable by
backups
• Recovery Time Objective• Reduced by having rapid access to a
recent copy of data. Typically data
can’t be in a backup format and must
be accessed “in-place”.
Low RTO and RPO can be Expensive
• Recovery Point Objective• Reduced by decreasing the time
between data protection events
• Traditionally not achievable by
backups, typically snapshots

• Traditionally a cluster or standby
server
Virtualization Has Changed Backups
The Changed Block Backup Challenge
Legacy: Once a night
sequential data copy
Virtualization Can Drive Down Costs
• Recovery Point Objective• CBT Tracking allows for more
frequent backups
• Recovery Time Objective• Recovery can happen directly from
the backup server no data transfer
• Standby server can be virtual no
capital outlay

Changed Block Backup
Now: protection several times a
day, incremental update
Virtualization Has Changed Backups
Full Backup Without Data Transfer
Multiple incrementals of
VM’s can be
reconstituted in to a
new full backup

Software Defined Storage
Storage Intelligence
Software Defined Storage
Storage Intelligence
Software Defined Storage Can Drive
Down RPO and RTO
• Recovery Point Objective• Mirror and Replication become
affordable and provide continuous
protection.
• Recovery Time Objective• Recovery can happen directly from
the production storage, no data
transfer AND full performance
• Standby server can be virtual no
capital outlay

Storage Intelligence
Use Both to Balance Availability and
Affordability
• Balanced Recovery Point Objective
and Balanced Recovery Time
Objective• All servers are not created equal
• Need protection from local corruption
• Need protection from site disaster
Balance Requires a Team
• No Single Solution can cover all
aspects of RTO and RPO
• Use Backup, Like Veeam *ALWAYS*
• Use Advanced Storage Software Like
StarWind to increase uptime and
meet strict RTO and RPOs
StarWind Virtual SAN Zeroing the RTO and RPO
• Zero hardware footprint
• Complete fault tolerance with just 2 servers
• No specialized staff required for management
What to do if RTO and RPO are very strict?
• Configure a live copy of the production data
• Guarantee redundancy of the infrastructure
• Use failover clustering techniques
• Configure HA storage access
• Configure fault tolerant VMs
