Speakers: Becky Hegstad & Valerie Borey,Concordia Language Villages

Topic: Culturally authentic play:Preschoolers gather at a Norwegian fishmarket…in Minnesota

Concordia Language Villages' pre­KNorwegian program, Barnehage, is built on asituated learning model of education. Thismodel emphasizes the concept ofrelationships and community as foundationalto language and cultural learning. Playmaintains a fundamental role in situatedlearning, where learning to know is not thesame as learning to do. Authentic playmeets young learners where they aredevelopmentally, which supports languagelearning and a broadening worldview. Thepresenters discuss an example ofcommunity of practice as they tell about aBarnehage simulation in which the childrentravel to Bergen's Fisketorget (fish market).Community building, language scaffolding,and authentic play guided students to theirculminating adventure: the trip to the fishmarket, so that they could "live" the market,versus learning about the market.

Rebecca "Annika" Hegstad, is programleader for Barnehage, a preschoolNorwegian immersion program of ConcordiaLanguage Villages located in Minneapolis.Hegstad has worked for ConcordiaLanguage Villages for 17 years. As AssistantDirector for Language Discovery Programs,she currently facilitates Chinese, Norwegianand Spanish preschool immersion programsduring the academic year. During thesummer, Hegstad directs language andculture immersion day camps in theMinneapolis/St. Paul metropolitan area. Sheholds a B.A. in Elementary Education and

Scandinavian Studies at Luther College(Decorah, Iowa), and earned an M.A. inScandinavian Studies from the University ofWisconsin (Madison). Hegstad'sprofessional emphases and interests havebeen focused on early childhood worldlanguage instruction methodologies, teachereducation and training, and curriculumdevelopment.

Valerie Borey "Magna" has been on staff for12 years on at Concordia LanguageVillages, leading Barnehage, Norge Rundt(Twin Cities Norwegian pre­K and youthprograms) and Skogfjorden summerprograms in Bemidji. She studiedAnthropology and has a master's in theSocial Sciences. Valerie says she learnedNorwegian "at my grandmother's knee" andis glad to have had her connections toNorway grow throughout childhood toadulthood and into parenthood. Valeriesays, "I think magic can be found in all sortsof places, especially in small closets, understairs, and in pockets that don't get checkedvery often. I like reading and writing, theatre,doing spotlights for the circus, and workingon art projects."

Speaker: Sarah "Hannah" Hansen

Topic: Women in Mathematics: A Study ofLearning, Leadership from One Women'sJourney to China.

For ten days in late 2010, Sarah was amember of the Mathematics EducationDelegation with the People to PeopleProfessional Ambassador Program. She metwith math educators from the primarythrough graduate university levels in Beijing,Xi'an, and Shanghai. Along the way, shelearned some surprising tidbits aboutmathematics education in China and alsosome unexpected revelations about herselfas a teaching mathematician. She also ate alot of delicious food and visited a childhooddream destination. Come experience herjourney through pictures and stories!

Sarah E. Hansen has been teaching andtutoring in mathematics and statistics sinceshe received her M.A. in Mathematics fromSaint Louis University and her B.A. inMathematical Sciences from College of St.Catherine (now a University!). Currently, she

is the Associate Director of the Center forAcademic Excellence at Metropolitan StateUniversity in Saint Paul and MinneapolisMinnesota. As Associate Director, Sarah hasdirect responsibility for staff and studentsworking in the Math Center, Science Centerand Testing Center. She also teaches in theApplied Mathematics Department as aCommunity Faculty Member and participatesin the MnSCU Tutoring Workgroup, hostingTutor Summits with tutoring professionalsand coordinators across the MnSCU system.In addition to Metropolitan State, Sarah hastaught mathematics at the University ofMinnesota General College, College of St.Catherine, University of Wisconsin­RiverFalls, and Inver Hills Community College. AsHannah, she was on staff for 10 summers atSkogfjorden, the Concordia NorwegianLanguage Village and she has continued tovolunteer for summer and year­roundprogramming since 2001. She has been amember of Lakselaget since 2005. Oh, andshe really likes to knit. A lot.

Speaker: Laurie Jacobi, Laurie JacobiDesigns

Topic: Woolen Designs Inspired by Nature

Laurie Jacobi is a storyteller in wool.

Her unique blanket, rug and clothing designsare inspired by legends of nature. Welcometo our world of wool where nature, legend,beauty and meaning combine with naturalfibers and the highest quality craftsmanshipto create functional works of art

Laurie Jacobi, whose mother was born inSweden and who has a home near theLeech Lake Indian Reservation in northernMinnesota, is an award­winning graphic andtextile designer. Her work as a designer ofcorporate identities and printed materialshas won her national recognition. Inspired bythe beauty of northern Minnesota she begandesigning a unique collection of blankets forthe Faribault Woolen Mills a decade ago.The popular Wellspring Legend blankets

have been sold world­wide and have evenappeared in movies and on television. Theblanket designs evolved into rugs as well asan exclusive line of clothing. Her work isinspired by nature and how Scandinavianand Native American cultures haveexpressed their relationships to it through artand legend. "The stories are very importantto me. And being a first generation Swedish­American, I can't help but be influenced bythe Swedish tradition of making beautifulthings an integral part of daily life."

Speaker: Dr. Maureen Reed, ExecutiveDirector of the Nobel Peace Prize Forum

Topic: The Nobel Peace Prize Forum:Placing Norway's Gift to the World in theSpotlight

Dr. Maureen Reed is the Executive Directorof the Nobel Peace Prize Forum. She co­chaired the Executive Committee from 2005­2011, shaping its evolution and its vision.She has attended nearly every Forum sinceit began in 1989. For her, the annual Forumis "a respite and a retreat ­­ the uniqueopportunity to renew my spirit and re­energize my mind."

A graduate of the University of MinnesotaMedical School, Dr. Reed practicedmedicine for twenty years in the Twin Citiesand is a member of the Medical ReserveCorps. With expertise in health care policy,she served on the 2007 Minnesota HealthCare Transformation Task Force and hasbeen a candidate for Lt. Governor and forU.S. Congress. 

With a passion for higher education, Dr.Reed was twice elected to the University ofMinnesota Board of Regents and served asits chair from 2001­2003. She holds anadjunct faculty appointment at the School ofPublic Health and the School of Medicine,and she is the chair of the University ofMinnesota Alumni Association.

Her business experience includes serving asPresident of Aspen Medical Group, VicePresident and Medical Director ofHealthPartners, and Executive Director ofthe Parks and Trails Council of Minnesota.

Dr. Reed has worked for brief stints in

Norway, Thailand, and Uganda. She and herhusband Dr. Jim Hart live in Stillwater andenjoy ice skating, family gatherings, andcross­country skiing.

Speaker: Claudia Schmidt ­ Dannert,Professor ­ Department of Molecular Biology& Biophysics, University of MInnesota

Topic: Norwegian Centennial ChairProgram

Six years ago, the Norwegian governmentand the University of Minnesota establisheda joined fund to create the NorwegianCentennial Chair Program (www.nocc.umn.edu) to promote transatlanticresearch and educational activities betweenMinnesota and Norway. Initially, thiscooperative agreement was between theUniversity of Minnesota and the NorwegianUniversity of Life Sciences and collaborativeactivities promoted research and educationin bioenergy, food safety and genomicsrelated fields. Two years ago, the Universityof Oslo joined this agreement. Shortly after,in Spring of last year, I was appointed theCentennial Chair of this now expanded,trilateral program. My task is together withmy counterparts at the two Norwegianuniversities to develop and kick­start newresearch and educational initiatives thatinclude the additional expertise, e.g. inmedical and engineering related fields,brought in by the University of Oslo. In thispresentation, I will provide a brief overviewon how this transatlantic collaboration wasstarted, which activities have beensupported in the past, what the program isdoing currently to promote new research andeducational interactions between Minnesotaand Norway.

Speakers: Sasha Aslanian, Reporter,Minnesota Public Radio

Topic: Retracing a wartime bicycle rideacross Norway

Sasha Aslanian is a reporter for MinnesotaPublic Radio and the granddaughter of

Norwegian immigrants who settled in Seattleafter World War II. In August of 2008, Sashaand her husband retraced her grandparents'WWII bike ride across Norway, from Finnøyto Heddal. Her journey was a quest tounderstand Norway's difficult years underGerman occupation while reconnecting withfamily members separated by distance,history and language. Her stories about thetrip have been published by The StarTribune, The Norwegian American Weekly,Adventure Cyclist magazine, and broadcaston American Public Media's WeekendAmerica. The radio feature won a 2009Lowell Thomas Travel Journalism award. 

Sasha Aslanian has been a producer andreporter for Minnesota Public Radio since1992. She's produced daily news for MPR,served as a national documentary producer,and filed stories for NPR, the BBC, PRI'sThe World, APM's Marketplace. She's a St.Paul sidewalk poet. She and her husbandLeif Larsen live in St. Paul with their twodaughters, Kaia and Liv, who dance with thePeer Gynt dancers at the Sons of NorwayYouth Lodge in St. Paul.

Speaker: Rita Docter

Topic: The Important Role of Creativity inthe Growth of Children

Rita Docter is a St. Olaf alum who hasjoyfully applied her music education degreeto develop skills and smiles in kids of allages. She is the author and ProgramManager of the BRAVO Music Appreciationprogram used in schools in MN and nowfrom coast to coast.  Her 30 years as avolunteer, a director and an administrator ofthe Angelica Cantanti Youth Choirs have

been filled with the rewards of helping todevelop young voices and of helping todevelop a passion for music in youngpeople.  Her statement of, "To share with achild what has delighted you, to find thechild's delight added to your own, so thatthere is now a double delight seen in theglow of trust and affection, this is happiness"sums up how she feels about the enjoymentand blessings of these three decades.  Ritahas conducted children's choirs, directedand written countless Christmas programs,musicals and worship services andproduced the opera “Amahl and the NightVisitors” at her church. Rita and her husband, Dave, are the parentsof three married children whose creativityhas also touched many appreciativeaudiences.  Their son, Pete Docter, and hiscolleagues at Pixar have entertained us withthe heart warming messages and pleasanthumor of, "Toy Story," "Monsters Inc." “Wall­e” and "Up." These are among the animatedstories that led to his earning an Oscar, aGolden Globe and many other awards. Theirdaughter, Kirsten, travels the world as violistof the Cavani String Quartet, and teaches atthe Cleveland Institute of Music and OberlinCollege.  Their youngest daughter, Kari, is acellist with the Metropolitan Opera in NewYork City.  And yes, four of Rita and Dave’sgrandchildren are also budding youngmusicians.

Khadra Abdi is originally from Somalia, shegrew up in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. She is arecent graduate of the Hubert H. HumphreySchool of Public Affairs with a Master ofPublic Policy. Khadra received herBachelors degree from Luther College inAnthropology and Women and GenderStudies. She has a strong background andinterest in international development,humanitarian assistance, HIV/AIDs andhealth issues, educational policy, humantrafficking, global feminism movements,human rights, and women­led NGOs andCo­ops. She has worked with children inKenya and ethnic communities in Twin Citieswith focus on program development and the

creation of healthy relations across cultures.
