Meeting planners who have experienced the extraordinary cooperation and support while conduct-ing an event here agree that Huntsville Makes It Happen. Whether your event involves 50 people or 10,000, the Convention & Visitors Bureau, participating hotels and attractions work diligently to make your event a success.

In the nearly 200 years since pioneers carved the first English-speaking town from the Alabama Territory, Huntsville has provided exemplary regional and national leadership beyond what would be expected from a city of 180,000.

It began when settler John Hunt built his cabin at a spring in 1805 and the town which grew up around it took his name after briefly being called Twickenham. Huntsville served as the Constitutional Capital of Alabama and hosted the convention in 1819 that led to statehood. During the Civil War, Union soldiers occupied the town, sparing the houses and businesses from destruction.

Huntsville was primarily a center for trade and textile mills from the 1830s until 1950 when a team of rocket scientists led by Wernher von Braun began America’s space program. Rockets developed here successfully launched America’s first satellite, put the first American in space and launched Apollo astronauts to the Moon. Today, Huntsville technology launches the Space Shuttle and fabricates the International Space Station.

Backed by corporate contractors, the NASA-Marshall Space Flight Center and the U.S. Army’s Redstone Arsenal continue the world’s leadership in both civilian and military propulsion. Nearly fifty of the Fortune 500 companies are located here. Several listed by Forbes are headquartered in Huntsville.

The city that invented “high tech” devotes the same attention to detail for your meetings and conventions. Huntsville Makes It Happen isn’t a slogan. It’s our way of doing business.

the U.S. Space & Rocket Center (USSRC) of Huntsville, Alabama, is a Smithsonian institute Affiliate Museum and an Official Visitor informa-tion Center for nASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center. the USSRC operates a museum which displays over 600 space artifacts in over 60,000 square feet of exhibit space. the most recent addition to the USSRC is the Davidson Saturn V Center, the 68,200-square-foot building that houses the Saturn V rocket. the Davidson Saturn V Center is the new front door for the USSRC museum complex. this new building creates a total of more than 100,000 square feet of exhibit space with the USSRC complex, making it the largest museum in the world devoted exclusively to space and space artifacts. in addition to housing the Saturn V, a national Historic landmark, the Davidson Saturn V Center includes such Apollo artifacts as the Apollo 16 capsule with parachutes;

capsule and lunar rover trainers; space suits; moon rock obtained during the Apollo 12 mission; a lunar tool set; lunar rover; and lunar lander. the facility also has a 350-seat auditorium, a full service kitchen, and comfortably seats 1,000 people. Because the Saturn V is displayed at least 10 feet above floor level, the area under the rocket is available for special events. located directly adjacent to the new building, the entry courtyard for the Davidson Saturn V Center is a permanent, outdoor museum exhibit called the Apollo Courtyard, where the nine Saturn V lunar missions is commemorated. the courtyard is centered around the standing replica of the Saturn V and bordered with walls featuring names of those who donated to the Saturn V Restoration project.

Visit the 1860 Historic Huntsville Depot, one of the South’s oldest railroad passenger depots and now a lively transportation museum. the three-story brick building has served as the local passenger house and corporate offices for the eastern division headquarters of the Memphis & Charleston railroad and was used as an active passenger station until 1968.

the building is well-preserved and appears much as it did in 1860. Graffiti on three walls of the upper story is a result of the building’s role as a prison for captured Confederate militia, as a billet for Union troops en route to major battles and as a hospital for the wounded from those battles.

the birthplace of Alabama is Alabama Constitution Village, an award-winning recon-struction of Huntsville as it existed when delegates gathered here in 1819 to write the state’s first constitution. Your visit to the village consists of a guided tour through seven authenti-cally reconstructed 19th Century buildings where interpreters in period clothing bring the past to life. in the Spring interpreters quilt and weave baskets, craft furniture, churn butter and make lye soap. in the Summer the men and women also weed and hoe the garden and pick vegetables to “put up” preserves. in September they make beer and wine in their spare time. in the Fall they pick cotton bolls from the small patch and use colors from vegetables and other natural sources to dye textiles. During the colder months they dip candles, smoke meats, grind sausage and prepare the garden for Spring.
