7:00pm General Meeting with Members & Guests

Our August meeting firmed up a number of questions that surfaced over the location of our monthly meetings. The majority of members present at the last meeting decided they preferred the Daytona Beach Golf Club Restaurant; so that's where we will be holding all future meetings. The Christmas Party will remain to be held at the Kennel Club. The administration at the Kennel Club has been extremely gracious and they will welcome us back if we ever need a future meeting place.

Normally, I avoid using members names in discussion of their individual contribution efforts and successes. However, during our August meeting we were faced with a costly expense for the construction of equipment boxes that would be durable and manageable for use in the dog trials to come. Hope Johnson, sitting next to me, whispered, “I will donate them for the club”. These boxes are of considerable expense. Hope's generous gift shows her dedication to the continued desire for success of OCOD and its purposes. She exemplifies what I believe we all feel about service to our canine friends. Thank you Hope! You and your Schipperke are in our hearts.

The general meeting was called to order at 7:20 p.m.

New member Deb White was introduced.

Wins & Brags were called for.

Ralph brought in the first wooden box to hold the jumps for our Obedience Trial. Five will be needed. Each will be on wheels and will be constructed to conform to the jump. Ralph said that it will take about $100. for each one. Hope Johnson donated $500.00 to the Club towards the material costs of getting the boxes made, and Ralph suggested a donation of $50.00 for each box to the Military Working Dogs for the cost of his time and labor.Purchase of a truck to move the agility equipment for each weekly agility class was again discussed. There were still too many unanswered questions about whether the site would allow another piece of our equipment to be stored there, insurance, tags, repairs, etc.

A report was given by Janet regarding a suitable location for our Club and she mentioned checking with the Parks & Recreation Dept., Holly Hill, to see about leasing the Gym of the old Holly Hill Middle School. Everyone was asked to get their applications in ASAP for the next set of Obedience and Agility classes. Volunteers are needed for help with both.

Activities for Responsible Dog Owner's Days on Sept. 8th, that will be held at the Volusia Mall will include Agility, Angels With Paws, Obedience Demo, New Horizons, Advanced Obedience Demo, Dancing Dogs, Rally Demo, CGC Demo, and Therapy Dogs Demo.

There will be an adoptathon at the Volusia County Fairgrounds on Sept. 18th.

On October 13th there will be the Halifax Humane Societies Barktoberfest. OCOD will do an agility demo.Fun Day, the weekend after Thanksgiving, needs a Coordinator. If you would be interested in this position, Andy will train you.

It was noted that critters had eaten several of the obedience mats that are stored at the training facility, so Renee will take care of arranging for an exterminator.

The C-match that was held on Friday before the Obedience/Rally Trial last month took in about $700.00 for the Club. It was decided that will be done again next year and a committee will be formed for that trial.

Everyone was reminded that the DOCOF Trials will be held at the Orlando Fairgrounds on the Sunday before Labor Day.

It was voted that the Club would continue holding the monthly meetings at the Daytona Golf Club in their restaurant, as it is smaller and everyone can hear so much better. The Christmas Party will be held at the Daytona Kennel Club, same as last year.

The Obedience Club's Trial last month had Expenses of approx. $13,809. And had Income of $13,200.Meeting was adjourned 8:20 p.m.

OCOD's participation in “Responsible Dog Ownership Days” (RDOD)

Saturday, Sept. 8, 2012What exactly is RDOD? An excerpt from an AKC press release last year reads: New York, NY Americans have embraced dog ownership for centuries, and many people today view their dogs as cherished members of the family. Owning a dog is not a right, however, but a privilege that must be respected and nurtured. It's crucial to recognize that there is a lot of work that goes into dog ownership - a happy, healthy and well trained canine is not created overnight! That's why AKC hosts AKC Responsible Dog Ownership Days each September - to keep the focus on Fido! This month, dog owners and dog lovers everywhere will join hundreds of AKC-affiliated dog clubs across the country for the AKC's seventh annual celebration. Nearly 500 events are being held in local communities this year, with the goal of educating and entertaining all current and future dog owners. All AKC Responsible Dog Ownership Day events are listed at http://www.akc.org/clubs/rdod/events/.

OCOD members are encouraged to go the AKC website shown at the end of the above press release and investigate the large amount of information available, from downloadable coloring books to information on more serious matters. OCOD is listed in the calendar of events.

We are fortunate to have the support of the management of the Volusia Mall by allowing us to use a significant amount of space at the mall at no charge and to allow us to bring dogs into the mall that day in order to take part in various demos and to help spread the word about RDOD.

The event date is Saturday, September 8, 2012, from 11:00 am - 4:00 pm. We have several other clubs and organizations signed up as participants and for demos.

Please plan to enter the mall at the northeast entrance (that's on the “back side” of the mall, i.e.; farthest from International Speedway Blvd.) in the corner where Macy's meets the main part of the mall (see mall map).

OCOD members interested in helping out, whether with setup, demos and/or packing up, should contact either Pat Mozden ([email protected] or 788-3800) or Debbie Canevaro ([email protected] or 386-212-6962).

Those setting up should plan to arrive at the mall no later than 7:30 am. Those packing up should either stay until, or arrive at, 4:00 pm. OCOD's obedience demos are scheduled for 12:15 (basic) and 2:30 (advanced). The agility demos will be at 11:00 and 1:30; and the dancing dog demos for 2:00 and 3:30. Rounding out the schedule will be demos from My Angels with Paws at 1:00 and New Horizons at 3:00. The Therapy Dogs willalso be doing a demo during the days schedule.

If you would like to participate in any of these demos, please contact the following people:- For obedience, contact: Ralph Orlando ([email protected] or 788-4268)- For agility, contact: Andy Gibbons ([email protected] or 672-4378)- For dancing dogs, contact: Linda Stites, ([email protected] or 761-9252)

Tables and tablecloths for participants to display their information are being provided by the mall. However, please plan to bring your own chair. Anyone bringing a dog should plan to bring a crate of the size that you would take to a show or obedience trial. Also bring supplies similar to what you would take to a trial (water, bowl, cleanup supplies, etc.). While dogs are allowed in the area we will be using, they should not be walked or carried elsewhere in the mall.

Thanks in advance…Pat Mozden and Debbie Canevaro

We finished up at Palmetto on May 28, 2012 after a long 2 days of teeter issues.

It was an incredible feeling, when she shot past the finish line, my knees went weak and the tears started. A friend, Vickie, met me at the finish with a bar and ribbon and shoved me back into to ring to take a victory lap with Tripp. It was a very small lap, I must say; my knees were so weak I could hardly walk much less run! My husband doesn't normally attend trials but I was glad he was there that day to cheer us on.

MACH TitleI have just added a new Pembroke Welsh Corgi to my family. This is Izzie – she is a one-year old tri -color. She is very petite –

just 18 lbs. Izzie has had the run of the household and needs some attitude

adjustments. It’s kind of like “idle minds are the devil’s playground” – or something

like that. Izzie has great spirit , I’m planning on doing Rally, Obedience, and Agility with her. We’ll even take a trip to

Melbourne for a herding instinct test.
