Our special Guest
President Deborah &
Craig Fruitnit from
RC New Zealand:
And we had the
honor of several
special invited
Military Guests
We wish you ALL a
Happy Birthday and Happy Rotary Anniversary
The meeting was brought to order by President
Joseph Gedeon. Past President Dave Livngston
provided the Inspiration, followed up by Jay
Ogden with the Pledge to the Flag. Introductions
were handled by PP Bob Tellander, and there were
plenty of guests today including several military
guests! The song was led by none other than
President Joe, while PE Steve Koyama greeted and
helped introduce the visiting Rotarians – President
Deborah Fruitnit and her husband Craig, visiting
all the way from New Zealand.
The Aloha Bucket was managed by Stephen
Morgan, and he successfully squeezed bucks from
Thomas Hall, PP Dave Hamil, Patti Mitchell, PE
Steve Koyama, Bob McDermott, Noburo
Yamaguchi, Magda Alexander, PP Roy Tanji,
and PP Tony Gedeon (who generously donated
$100 towards Polio eradication efforts)! There may
have been a few others missed, and hence apologies
are in order, but as happened so many times, our
frenzied scribe couldn’t scribble fast enough and eat
at the same time.
The announcements came next, with a litany of
Community Service projects offered up to those
willing and able. These included a Halloween
event at the Holy Nativity School, Books for
Schools, and a Keiki Vision event, a Thanksgiving
dinner by the Salvation Army, and a stream
conservation project out in the country in rural
Kahaluu. Please sign up and volunteer to help at
one or more of these great projects!
We also were saddened to hear that
Kathryn Henski, PP Walt
Thorndike, PP Mark Moore and
Bob Walker were all not feeling
well, and we wish each of them a
full and speedy recovery soon!
Magda announced the birthdays for October,
including PP Janet Scheffer, PP Dick Matti, Tay
Perry, and PP Mo Radke. Also celebrating their
anniversary joining Rotary were Bill Amigone,
Paul McGillicuddy, Karen Smith and Jan
Stelovsky.
Our guest speaker was none other
than the legendary Dr. Kent
Keith, renowned author and
educator. Dr. Keith began by
talking a little about his
background in higher education,
having attended 6 universities
himself and also been President of
2 right here in Hawaii – Chaminade and Pacific
Rim. He also talked about the history of higher
education, how these institutions got started initially
by religious organizations, then by industrialists and
philanthropists. Advance research institutes came
next, followed by community colleges, technical
schools and for-profit schools. There are also so
called “corporate” universities, mostly just for
training and certificate programs of employees. Dr.
Keith discussed the changes in higher education,
and the waning emphasis of liberal arts colleges and
degrees. He feels that education is not solely about
getting a job or pursuing a career, but should
prepare a student for life and the myriad of
challenges of being a happy, productive, engaged
person and having a fulfilling life. Upon closing,
he opened up the discussion to questions – and the
hands of our resident scholars all seemed to shoot
up simultaneously. A great Q&A session
commenced, until President Joe had to cut the time
in order to close the meeting.
Before doing so, the obligatory investment portfolio
was held, Yamaguchi-San had the winning ticket,
but unfortunately he pulled the darn red marble so
the funds will grow until next time. Pres. Joe had
everyone recite the 4-Way Test, then gave a sharp
rap to the Rotary Bell and brought another fine
meeting to a close.
Respectfully submitted by
PP Dave Hamil, Today’s Scribe
Thank you Dave Hamil
