Why Outdoor Education?
Outdoor Education is a program that includes discovery, experimentation, learning about and connecting to the natural world, and engaging in historic and adventure activities.
The primary goal of outdoor education is to teach a commitment to human responsibility for stewardship or care of the land, to treat the land and all its resources with respect at all times and on all occasions.
Outdoor education and play support emotional, behavioral and intellectual development. Studies have shown that students who learn outdoors develop: a sense of self, independence, confidence, creativity, decision-making and problem-solving skills, empathy towards others, motor skills, self-discipline and initiative.

District 65 Gender PolicyDistrict 65 strives to be a compassionate community that fully accepts everyone. Through our work of equity, we have grown in our understanding that not all of our students fall into the socially constructed gender binary that many of our systems uphold, including the historical manner that Camp Timber-lee has operated.
At Camp Timber-lee, overnight arrangements are provided in cabins that are assigned by gender. Going forward, students’ assignments to cabins will be made based on student expressed gender identity. A mixed-gender cabin will be made available for students with non-binary gender identities who do not wish to use the male or female designated cabins, as well as for their friends and allies as determined by staff and students, using student gender support plans.
We appreciate the Evanston/Skokie community’s push and support as we grow in our ability to create an educational environment that increasingly demonstrates our collective commitment to unwavering acceptance of all identities.
