by Kathy Mixon and Linda Gurasich

The September meeting was followed by a propagation demonstration by ourvery own President Elect Matt McKenzie. Matt stressed the importance of usinggood quality, sterile soil and a sterile cutting tool for propagation. He

demonstrated a fairly simple process by cutting away a stem from the parent plantand then inserting into a pot filled with soil. Some plants send out roots along theirstems, which can be bent and secured into soil and eventually cut away from theparent after a new plant is established. He brought along a pineapple plant hehad grown from propagation, removed the pineapple and demonstrated how tocut the crown and prepare for a new propagation. He and others brought cuttings that included Rose of Sharon, Jerusalem sage, weeping willow, bromeliad, sweet potato and cactus. Attendees were able to takeat least two cuttings of their choice to take home for propagation. Regarding plantcare, Matt called his plants “neglected” in that he essentially leaves them aloneand lets them tell him what they need!

Jacob's Well Updateby Phyllis Janowski

October marks the one year anniversary of the partnership between Hays CountyMaster Gardeners Association (HCMGA) and the Hays County team at Jacob’sWell Natural Area (JWNA). Representatives from both organizations met atJWNA on October 3rd to review and plan for our continued joint efforts to enhancehorticultural educational aspects on the property.

Quincy, our Master Gardener Liaison, has been instrumental in helping HCMGAto accomplish our onsite goals. Concrete benches have been installed by JWNAto create a Conversation Area. Master Gardener, Ila Gandy, constructed andinstalled two beautiful Arbors for the Demonstration Garden. Ila is also creating awooden name plaque and logo for the greenhouse. Demonstration GardenChairpersons, Ruth Gaunt and Oona Mekas, along with their team have made agreat start on the Demonstration Pollinator Garden with pathways created andplant species labeled. The next step is weed control and mulching to take placethis month with additional rock to outline the garden beds.

Construction of the HCMGA Greenhouse, under the direction of Chairperson RoyThornton, is nearing completion. JWNA is providing electricity and water hookupsto the greenhouse. Master Gardener, Patricia Hupp, has successfully obtaineddonations for a Rainwater Harvesting System, gutters and solar panels for thegreenhouse. Master Gardener, Carol Croft, secured the donation of a largerainwater storage tank.

A key topic discussed is to plant trees in the Demonstration Garden - especiallyfor shading the garden benches. “Themes” for future Demonstration/TeachingGardens are being researched. We plan to construct and fence in raised bedsaround the greenhouse this coming spring.

When I was a young girl growing up in the RioGrande Valley, grapefruit and orange trees lined thestreets of every yard. As soon as my Mammaw wouldpull out the juice maker from the cabinet, I would runbarefoot out the back door to pick a handful oforanges off the tree. Next to the fruit trees, myPappaw had a garden where he let me help himwater the rows of vegetables. I remember harvesting

the carrots and barely washing them with the water hose before eating them rightthere in the yard. This is where my first love of gardening began.

As I became an adult, I dabbled in gardening. I would work diligently to get mygarden started and dream of the harvest. However, raising a young family andworking full time always took priority, and my garden would slowly whittle away.

Then last year, my husband signed me up for the Master Gardener’sProgram. Each week was full of exciting new information. I must admit that I havehad many epic failures over the past year, but the rewards have been far greater. My passion for gardening has consumed me. It has given me a chance to getback to Mother Nature. There is a thrill of going out to the garden the next morningand finding a new leaf or bloom that wasn’t there the day before. The abundanceat harvest time has given me the opportunity to share with my friends andneighbors. I have also been fortunate enough to meet other wonderful MasterGardeners who have been so willing to share their knowledge and joy ofgardening. I hope that I can do the same for other gardeners as well.
