Why teach this lesson?According to Development Profiles, three year old children should sort objects logically on the basis of one dimension, such as color, shape, or size.

The Ohio kindergarten standards state that the child should, “Classify objects into given categories; count the numbers of objects in each category and sort the categories by count.” We need to prepare children for this.

This activity will give children the opportunity to sort objects by color and count each group. It will incorporate sorting and comparing.

Laminated activity sheets

Dry erase markers

Bowls for pompoms

Advanced Preparation

Prepare activity sheets that have spaces within which children will place pompoms and a section to write the total for each color. Laminate them to enable reuse.

Page 6: Meet your match

What to do! 1. Talk about colors and review them with the children.

2. Provide each child with a bowl of pompoms, and an activity sheet.

3. The children, with direction, will sort their pompoms by color onto the designated areas on the page.

4. As the children finish, count the number of pompoms in each color area.

5. Children write each total on the activity sheet.

6. Briefly discuss which has more or fewer pompoms.
