What is Physics?
• Physics is the scientific study of matter and energy and how they interact with each other.
• This energy can take the form of motion, light, electricity, radiation, gravity . . . just about anything, honestly.
• Physics deals with matter on scales ranging from sub-atomic particles (i.e. the particles that make up the atom and the particles that make up those particles) to stars and even entire galaxies.
Your Child Needs to Do the Following to Succeed in Mrs. Hoffman’s Physics Class:
• Attend Class as often as possible-when your child misses class-they miss out on meaningful instruction
• If your child misses a lab, quiz, or test-have him/her make it up as soon as possible
• STUDY!!!—This maybe the first time that your child has had to study for a science/math class. If your child puts in the time, then he/she will see positive results!
• HAVE YOUR CHILD ASK QUESTIONS!!!!!! I am here to help him/her
• Your child should do all of his/her assignments!-All assignments have a purpose-Ms. Hoffman does not give “busy work”
Supplies
• Spiral-needs to be brought everyday
• Calculator—(see next slide) needs to be scientific or graphing*****THIS NEEDS TO BE BROUGHT EVERYDAY
• Protractor
• Binder & Dividers (5 pack)-recommended
• Each class is asked to bring a specific supply
Calculators• You need a
scientific
calculator!
• Or you can have a graphing calculator.
•Your child should bring the calculator to class everyday•Practicing daily on his/her personal calculator is very useful for homework

How Parents Can Help
• Encourage Students-often Science intimidates students
• Remind students when projects due dates and test dates are approaching
• Check grades on the computer program “Skyward”
• Remind students that I have tutorials (Tuesday and Wednesday Afternoons) and I am happy to help them on their assignments
• Encourage students to retake quizzes and tests that the student failed
Communication with Parents/Guardians
• I will try to communicate with parents and guardians every 2 weeks
• In the emails, I will let you know when important dates (projects and tests) are approaching
• If you email me during the school day, I will most than likely reply the same day
• If you call me at school, it is much more difficult to respond—the office has to send the message to me and then I have to find a telephone to use during my conference period or before/after school
Mrs. Hoffman’s Tutorials
• Tutorials: Tues. & Wed. from 2:15-2:45• If those times are not convenient, then the
student can schedule another time by speaking with me
• I have hall duty from 6:50-7:05 during the following dates: Sept. 14-Oct. 2, Nov. 8-Nov. 30, Jan. 29-Feb. 20, April 18-May 10
• I am willing to help the student while I am on hall duty—they will have to go to my duty station (outside where the buses drop off)
Mrs. Hoffman’s Website
• www.pearlandisd.org/webpages/LHoffman
• This website is an excellent resource
• It includes when projects are due and when tests will be taken
• Test reviews and project assignments are available-if your child misplaces the assignments
• Link to my email
