Subject-Based Banding
What is Subject-based Banding?
A student has the flexibility of taking a mix of standard or foundation subjects depending on his strength in each subject
Primary 5 Subject Combination Subject
Combination Subjects

(& Higher MT)
4S
English Maths Science Mother Tongue

End P4
Student sits for school-based examination.
• Based on student’s results, school recommends a subject combination
• Parents fill up option form indicating preferred combination
P5 Student takes subject combination chosen by parents
End P5
Student who takes 4 standard subjects and has difficulty coping: • school may allow him to take 1 or more subjects at
foundation level at P6
How Subject-based Banding works
End P5
Student who takes 1 or more foundation subject(s) and does very well in the subjects: • school may allow him to upgrade some subjects to
standard level if the school believes he can cope • continue with the same subject combination in P6
All other students:
continue with the same subject combination in P6
P6 Student takes subject combination decided by school

Primary School Leaving Examination (PSLE)
How Subject-based Banding works
PSLE Special Arrangements For students seeking MT exemption
For students with learning or physical disabilities (e.g. Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD), visual/hearing/speech impairment etc.) ◦ May be given special arrangements ◦ Applications must be accompanied by a psychological
report ◦ PSLE Certificates will be annotated for some special
arrangements
Submissions close in end January
PSLE – Placement Examination
• Need to reflect the relative achievement level of students with their peers.
• Places students into different courses according to their academic ability.
• Enables posting to Secondary Schools by merit and as far as possible into a school of their choice.
What is T-Score?
• It gives the relative standing of student’s performance as compared to the performance of all the other level students in that subject.
• PSLE Aggregate Score is a sum of the T-scores and NOT raw score of the 4 subjects.
EL Ave = 60
MTL Ave = 80
0
85%
John scores 85% in EL & MTL
Example
EL
MTL
His performance in MT is very close to that of his peers.
He did much better in EL as compared to other students.
Aggregate T-Score
Total T Score = TEL + TMTL + TMATH + TSC
= 61 + 54 + 55 + 58 = 228 T = 50 + 50 + 50 + 50 = 200 (Express Stream)
X: student’s mark for the subject Y: average mark (mean) scored by all students Z: spread of marks around the average mark (standard deviation)
Z
Y) - (X 10 50 T + =
Calculation of T-score
Student’s mark (X) in exam = 50.0 Average mark (Y) scored by all students = 68.0 Spread of marks (Z) = 14.0
T = 50 + 10 (50 - 68.0)
14.0
= 37.14
Calculation of T-score
Example
Subject Total Mark T-Score
English 200 105 34
Chinese 200 152 51
Maths 100 67 53
Science 100 58 47
Aggregate Score = 185
