NEBRASKA LIFE SKILLS TEAM CHAMPIONS | MEET THE HUSKERS

The 2014-15 Nebraska swimming and diving team plunges into a new season looking to build off the momentum of a 2013-14 season that was characterized by improvement and new career bests. The Huskers set an astounding 42 career-bests at the 2014 Big Ten Championships.

Although Nebraska graduated several key performers last season, the 2014-15 squad features two NCAA Championship qualifiers and 10 top-24 finishers from the 2014 Big Ten Championships. The Huskers also return 10 first-place finishers from last season and 17 letterwinners.

The Huskers will count on four seniors to help provide leadership for the 2014-15 squad. Kelly Dunn, Ciara Jenkins, Rebekah Land and Natalie Morris comprise a group of seniors that has earned 52 victories over their careers at Nebraska.

The Huskers will also rely on the experience of NCAA Championship qualifiers Taryn Collura and Anna Filipcic experience to provide leadership to help the team continue the steady improvement it has seen in recent years.

With an experienced group of returners coming off a season with so much improvement, Nebraska Coach Pablo Morales is optimistic heading into the new season.

“We had a good summer,” Morales said. “All of our retuners stayed and we got some good training in as a club and competed extremely well. The girls are constantly looking to get to the next level and we can’t help but have a positive outlook for the year. We definitely look forward to continuing our climb in the Big Ten.”

In addition to Nebraka’s strong core returning from last season, the Huskers expect to see the same kind of work ethic from its newcomers to keep the program headed in the right direction. According to Morales, Nebraska’s freshman class (Cassandra Brassard, Jordan Ehly, Aimee Fischer, Francesca Giganti and Amanda Moran) has already shown the necessary traits to continue to help the Huskers climb in the Big Ten.

“Our freshman class has already shown really good ability, attitude and as we were expecting, they fit right in with the program,” Morales said. “With great spirit and attitude, the training has been really good.”

Nebraska features an accomplished group of returners with great leadership skills. While Nebraska boasts a good group of returners, it is not a large group. The Huskers will need to count on a combined effort from both the newcomers and experienced members of the team in order to continue to improve and rise in the Big Ten.

The Nebraska sprint freestyle corps should continue to be strong. This season the squad will once again look to its sprint freestylers to set the tone early in dual meet competitions.

Taryn Collura, a qualifier for the 2013 NCAA Championships, will be looked to as the unit’s leader in 2014-15. A junior, Collura is Nebraska’s top returner in the 50- and 100-yard freestyles. According to Morales, the group also features several other swimmers who will make the 2014-15 group one of the strongest on the team.

The squad will look to Alex Bilunas to step in and become a strong competitor for the sprint group. Bilunas is coming off a sophomore season where she earned 11 top-five places, four first-place finishes and captured an NCAA B cut. Dunn and Bria Deveaux will also be important contributors, after combining for 21 top-five finishes in 2013-14.

“We’ve got a lot of other sprinters, who are very solid and will definitely help us,” Morales said. “Alex Bilunas has continued to develop along with Bria Deveaux and Kelly Dunn. We also have some stroke sprinters that do some sprint freestyle like Jacqueline Juffer and Erin Oeltjen, just to name a couple, and we are looking to see some more development from them.”

In the middle- and long-distance freestyle events, sophomore Julia Roller is expected to lead Nebraska. In her first season with the Huskers, Roller earned nine top-five finishes including one victory. She also

captured three top-25 finishes at the 2014 Big Ten Championships.

Nebraska will be boosted by the return of Katt Sickle. After sitting out last season with an injury, Sickle hopes to pick up where she left off as a freshman. Sickle earned 13 top-five finishes and three victories in her debut season with the Huskers in 2012-13. Morales said Sickle’s return could provide a major lift to the middle- and long-distance freestyle events.

“Katt is a great testamant to perserverance, patience and tenacity with her rehab and getting back,” Morales said. “She really shined at the sectional meet this summer in the mid-distance freestyle events. In those events she’s really going to become the person we had hoped she would be and much more.”

Sickle and Roller will be joined by teammates Michaela Cunningham and Aimee Fischer in adding depth to the middle- and long distance freestyle corps.

Rebekah Land is Nebraska’s top returner in both the 100- and 200-yard backstrokes. Along with Land, Nebraska boasts a solid group of backstrokers, including Oeltjen and Juffer.

“We return a lot backstrokers who were very near scoring last year,” Morales said. “Rebekah Land, Erin Oeltjen and Jacqueline Juffer have done extremely well, and we look forward to their continued development in the backstroke.”

Nebraska is also counting on the talented freshman duo of Moran and Brassard to step up and add depth in the backstroke events.

Samantha Hardewig leads a strong group of returning Huskers in the breaststroke. Hardewig owns the top returning times in the 100- and 200-yard breaststroke, and she also notched two top-20 finishes at the 2014 Big Ten Championships. Hardewig also posted an NCAA B cut.

Nebraska’s butterfly corps will be led by Collura in the 100-yard and Natalie Morris in the 200. While Nebraska may lack some depth in the fly events, the Huskers make up for it in quality. Roller and Deveaux are expected to round out the butterfly and compete at a high level in the event .
