THOUGHTS ON THE JOURNEY

He was favored by his father, hated by his brothers, sold into slavery, and falsely imprisoned. Not exactly the life story of a man that would eventually and literally save the world. The story of Joseph is an interesting one. His life was, seemingly, one trial after another. Every time he thought things were looking up, he faced another disappointment. It would have been easy for Joseph to throw in the towel and give up.

Instead of giving up, as we might have been tempted to do, Joseph was a man that maintained his integrity and experienced the blessing of God in some extraordinary ways. Because of his walk with God, and because of God’s favor, Joseph rose to the top wherever he happened to be.

Joseph’s brothers did not care for him at all. He was his dad’s favorite, and his dad didn’t even try to hide it. He gave Joseph a special robe that represented his love for him. Having had enough of the favoritism, his brothers sold him into slavery. After being sold, Joseph ends up in Egypt where he served as a slave to Potiphar. Joseph experienced great success and ended up running Potiphar’s household for him. However, Potiphar’s wife lacked the character and integrity that defined Joseph. She took a liking to Joseph, but when her advances were not received, she falsely claimed that Joseph tried to rape her. This accusation landed Joseph in prison.

In prison, Joseph continued his virtuous ways, and God continued to bless him. It was not long before Joseph was running the prison – as an inmate. While in prison he met two men, only identified as the cupbearer and baker of the king. These men each had a dream that they did not know how to interpret. Joseph interpreted the dreams for them and provided clarity to what God is saying. This event may have seemed inconsequential, but it was far from that.

The day came that Pharaoh had a dream. He had no idea what it meant, nor could he find anyone to interpret it. The cupbearer remembered that Joseph interpreted his dream and told Pharaoh about it. Pharaoh brought Joseph in and Joseph not only told him what the dream meant, but what he was to do about it. In the end, Pharaoh placed Joseph over all of Egypt.

Today, we will look at several of the lessons we can learn from this story. For now, let us remember this: no matter what happens in our lives, we must maintain the integrity that God calls us to, and we must remember that God is with us and will bring about His will in our lives.

Honored to be your pastor,

WELCOME TO NORTHSIDE

Setback but Not Set Aside Genesis 37-41

THE BIG IDEA: When we experience a setback, we must trust that God will move to redeem our story. 1. Expect _____________________________ (Gen 37:28,

39:19-20, 40:14, 40:23). 2. Maintain your __________________________ (Gen 39:8,

39:23a). 3. Know that _______________ is with you (Gen 39:2, 39:23b). 4. Trust that ___________ is taking you somewhere (Gen 41:1,

41:9-13, 41:37-40).

1. What is one of the greatest setbacks you have experi-enced in life?

2. In that season, was it difficult to continue to walk in integ-

rity? 3. Were you able to sense that God was with you, or did you

feel deserted? 4. Did you have confidence that God would bring about

good out of your situation? 5. What lessons did you learn that you can pass on?
