Ballerina Wendy Whelan:Dancing beyond scoliosis

Top/ “Wendy’s Louisville” banner is located at the J.

Graham Brown School (corner of 1st and Muhammad Ali Blvd.)Above/ X-ray of Wendy’s back with scoliosis.

Kosair Kid® Wendy Whelan

Wendy Whelan began taking ballet classes when she was 3 years old, and like many little girls, she

dreamed of growing up to be a ballerina. By age 12, Wendy was determined to make those dreams a reality. But despite her immense talent and overwhelming drive, she had one challenge that could potentially derail her — she was diagnosed with scoliosis.

Scoliosis is a condition that causes the spine to curve to the side, and in Wendy’s case, her spine was shaped like an S. This was not ideal for a sport that required perfect posture and balance, but Wendy was determined to overcome this challenge.

Wendy spent the summer of 1980 in and out of Kosair Crippled Children Hospital. She would spend one week a month at the hospital in hopes of straightening out her spine. She would spend all day in traction and the night in neck and waist halters. After her first visit, she was an inch and a half taller, and she knew her treatment was working. Her physician, Dr. Kenton Leatherman, told her that the best sports for those with scoliosis were swimming and ballet, and Wendy knew her dreams were not lost.

Keeping dreams aliveAfter spending a week at KCCH, Wendy

would go home for a month to resume her normal life — with the addition of a 15-pound plaster cast she had to wear on her back. Wendy’s Louisville Ballet instructor encouraged her to come to class every day and do everything she could even though she was very limited. Her teacher knew that she had worked hard to get to the level she was at, and needed to keep her focus if she wanted to keep her dreams afloat. So that’s just what Wendy did.

Once Wendy’s final cast was removed, she said she felt like a bird that had been freed from its cage. She could jump and kick higher and she felt more powerful than ever. She could feel the change in her body from her newly straightened back.

In 1981, Wendy auditioned and was accepted into a summer ballet program in New York. She was invited to stay through the winter, and within a year and a half, she was attending the School for American Ballet on full scholarship and living in New York City at age 15. She joined the New York City Ballet just 2 years later and by the age of 24, she was promoted to principal dancer.

A proud Kosair Kid®

Wendy performed with the NYCB for 30 years. Her final performance with the company was in October 2014 and sold out within minutes. Wendy has traveled around the world thanks to dance, and has been a guest artist with The Royal Ballet and with the Kirov Ballet. Wendy says she still has a lot of dance left in her, and is now working in the world of contemporary dance.

Wendy’s current hip surgeon is amazed at how balanced her hips are and how centered her head is over her pelvis, and believes that was what helped make her into such an incredible dancer. Wendy attributes her balance to the doctors at Kosair. Wendy said, “I tremendously valued my time at Kosair Crippled Children Hospital. It made me mentally, emotionally, and physically who I am now.” Wendy is a proud Kosair Kid® and an advocate for those with scoliosis.

Meet Kosair Kid®

Lily SingletonLily Singleton just learned how

to swim underwater. She enjoys playing Pokemon Go, Sims and

Dream Gym. She loves crafts and makeup. In other words, she is a normal 9-year-old girl full of energy and happiness, but just four years ago, these activities seemed like a pipe dream.

Lily was born with cystic fibrosis, a genetic disease that causes persistent lung infections. Symptoms began to show when she was

only 5 months old, and Lily endured many hospital stays. At 5½ years old, when Lily should have been in kindergarten surrounded by friends, the lower lobe of one of her lungs collapsed and she spent four months on constant oxygen. She weighed only 28 pounds and doctors suggested she might need a lung transplant. Then everything changed.

‘A true miracle’The FDA approved Kalydeco, a new drug

that treats the specific mutation of cystic fibrosis that Lily has. Within weeks of taking the medicine, Lily’s health began to improve significantly.

“The only way I can describe it is witnessing a true miracle,” says Cari Wagner, Lily’s mom. “She started to be able to walk around and play without losing her breath. Her complexion started to become better. Her cheeks became rosy again.”

While Kalydeco changed her life immeasurably, Lily still has to fight cystic fibrosis every day. She does breathing treatments twice a day—sometimes more often if she is sick. She also does her airway clearance therapy for 20 minutes twice a day, in which she wears a vest that shakes the mucus from her lungs. She has a feeding tube in her stomach and receives high-calorie shakes to supplement her diet because she is still small for her age.

Lily’s playhouseThis is a lot for a 9-year-old to deal

with, but Lily faces each day with a positive attitude. Her attitude was

one of the reasons she was selected to receive a custom-made dream

playhouse built by YouthBuild Louisville in partnership

with the Building Industry

“I just wanted her to have somewhere she could go where her medical equipment didn’t have to take up space and remind her she has CF.”

Wagner calls the playhouse “the biggest blessing” for her family.

“Lily’s bedroom has always had medical equipment in it,” she explains. “I just wanted her to have somewhere she could go where her medical equipment didn’t have to take up space and remind her she has CF.”

Instead, her playhouse is filled with only things Lily enjoys—the colors teal, pink and gold, a chandelier, a dry erase board and a loft bed.

Lily says, “I love everything about it!”Her mom loves it, too.

A special feeling“I know she will get a lot of use out of the

playhouse and will have so many memories to look back on, from the building process and seeing it under construction at YouthBuild, to the reveal party, to the slumber parties and game nights that will take place in our own backyard,” Wagner says “We are very grateful to have been given

the opportunity to receive this gift from Kosair Charities.

Lily felt so special the day of the playhouse reveal. I love seeing her be able to spend time in her new playhouse, and it would not have been possible without Kosair Charities.”

Making progress in the battle against cystic fibrosis

Cystic fibrosis is a rare disease, but thanks to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation it has been able to get

the attention and funding needed to propel tremendous medical advancements that have saved countless lives.

Today, for the first time in history, more than 50 percent of the estimated 30,000 people nationwide who live with cystic fibrosis are adults, and their average life expectancy is almost 40. Compare that to the 1950s when the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation was formed. Back then, most children with cystic fibrosis did not live to see elementary school.

What changed? The answer is twofold. First, new drugs have been developed to better manage the disease and address underlying causes. Cystic fibrosis is a progressive genetic disease that causes persistent lung infections and limits the ability to breathe over time. Second, most children are now screened for CF at birth through newborn screenings, and the majority are diagnosed by age 2.

“That is one of the big things about the foundation,” says Ruth Hans, the development director for the Kentucky-West Virginia chapter of the foundation. “It’s here to end cystic fibrosis. It not only does research funding, it does everything.”

Beth Denham, executive director of the chapter, elaborates: “We have a holistic approach. We are one of the few diseases

where at clinics there are respiratory therapists, social workers, dieticians, pulmonologists, a whole team of people. Because you care for every element of the disease and the person.”

Bringing patients togetherOne of the challenges the Cystic Fibrosis

Foundation faces is that people with the disease run the risk of contaminating one another if they come into close contact. There are more than 1,800 different mutations of cystic fibrosis. This makes supporting one another very difficult and sometimes isolating.

The foundation has embraced technology to create alternative channels for people to interact. Things like video conferencing and phone calls can bring patients together without compromising health.

“We are working really hard to work that component into everything we do,” Denham says.

Blessed by supportThe Kentucky/West Virginia chapter, which

is based in Louisville, is best known for its Celebrity Dinner Party, an annual black-tie fundraiser held since the 1960s. Hall of Fame basketball coach Denny Crum and his wife, Susan Sweeney Crum, are longtime supporters and co-chairs of the event.

They also host the local leg of the nationwide Cystic Fibrosis Foundation Great Strides walk event, which raises millions of dollars for research and patient care.

Finally, they receive money through donations and grants from organizations, including Kosair Charities. This year Kosair Charities awarded a $5,000 grant to the foundation to support individualized care for children in our community. Thanks to donors like you, Kosair Charities has been able to provide $110,000 in support to CFF over the years.

“We are happy with the support we have received,” Hans says. “We have been blessed by support from local celebrities and organizations. A lot of these things we do wouldn’t be possible without that support.”

The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation of Kentucky and West Virginia staff Lena Iwu, Beth Denham, Claire Trotter, and Ruth Hans.

Corporate Kite Club Spotlight: Park Community Credit Union

Who would like a cute debit card that also benefits Kosair Kids®? In 2011, Park Community Credit

Union selected Kosair Charities to benefit from a new innovative fundraising idea. The plan is simple: When a customer opens a Park account, he or she has the option to donate $5 to receive a Kosair Charities debit card. Five years later, with 2,800 issued cards and employee donations, the Park Community debit card program has raised over $40,000 for Kosair Charities. A portion of the funds raised from the Park Community debit card program contributed to the new playground at the Kosair Charities East Campus (see page 9). The Kosair Kids® at Bluegrass Center for Autism now enjoy a safe environment to have fun! “At Park, part of our fundamental mission is to work for the success of our members and our communities,” says Jim Spradlin, president of Park Community Credit Union. “For many years we have had a valuable relationship with Kosair Charities through our charity debit card program. We feel that this gives us the chance to give back

to those in our communities that need a helping hand.  Our organization considers it an honor to work with Kosair Charities and to have the opportunity to make a positive difference in the lives of those that Kosair Charities serves.” Park Community does not stop there. If you attend a Kosair Charities event and meet a volunteer, there is a strong possibility it is a Park Community employee. Kosair Night at the Zoo, St. Matthews Mid-Summer’s Night 5K and the Gaslight Festival are just a few of the events where they have helped as volunteers. Their staff, family and friends have also volunteered at Kosair Charities to wrap toys and books for Kosair Kids® during the holiday season. Park Community also raises awareness about Kosair Charities at their branch locations and events. Park Community has received a number of honors, including Louisville Business First 2016 Partners in Innovation Award and the Chamber of St. Matthews 2016 Community Champion. Thank you, Park Community Credit Union, for being a true partner of Kosair Charities and a champion of Kosair Kids®!

Bluegrass Center for Autism playground dedication

Three years ago, Kosair Charities East Campus opened to help expand services for Kentuckiana’s

children with special needs. Formally known as Cardinal Hill Rehabilitation Center – Easter Seals, Kosair Charities’ East Campus provides a charitable lease to The Kids Center for Pediatric Therapies and the Bluegrass Autism Center to operate “rent free.” On Sept. 29, community leaders gathered to dedicate a new playground located on the Bluegrass Center for Autism wing. This playground replaced outdated equipment that was not fully accessible. All of the new equipment is not only recreational. Each activity at the playground also has therapeutic value for the children. At times, the project’s goal to raise $120,000 to build the playground seemed out of reach. The new playground is now an example of the generosity and overwhelming support for kids in our community. Thank you to our Premier Partners: Park Community Credit Union, City of Jeffersontown, Louisville Metro, Councilwoman Marilyn Parker, Councilman Glenn Stuckel, and the DREAM Foundation of Kentucky. Thank you for being project leaders to help make the playground a reality. Generous contributions were also

provided by the Cralle Foundation Inc. - Jim Crain, Home Foundation Inc., Koch Charitable Trust, Walmart Community Fund, FEAT, Landscape Structures, Jeffersontown Mayor Bill Dieruf, and the Jeffersontown City Council. Also, Louisville Metro Council members Kelly Downard, Robin Engel, Tom Owen, Kevin Kramer, Madonna Flood, James Peden, Cindy Fowler, and Marianne Butler. Thank you all for your support!

Kosair Charities Crystal Ball: Honoring those who build a better future for our kids

The Kosair Charities Crystal Ball, a gala of gifts and grants, was held at the Kosair Shrine Center

on Saturday, Oct. 1. This annual event celebrates more than 100 organizations that are supported by Kosair Charities and the work they do for our community’s children.

Thanks to our generous donors, we will grant over $10 million to these agencies in 2017. The grants will help organizations build state-of-the-art facilities, make transportation available for children, provide critical medical research and create better tomorrows for children across Kentucky and Southern Indiana.

In addition to honoring our supported agencies, two individuals were recognized with awards for dedicating their lives to helping Kosair Kids®.

Elaine “Cissy” Musselman received the Sam Swope Community Leadership Award. This award recognizes an individual who has advanced children’s goals for the future through vision, innovation and self-sacrifice. Cissy is the founder of Women 4 Women Inc., a nonprofit organization that raises money and public awareness for programs to improve the health

and economic well-being of women and girls.

Dr. Stephen Church was honored with the Roger Fox Award. This award, named for a dedicated member of Kosair Charities who passed away prematurely, recognizes a physician’s dedication to children. Church is one of the founders of East Louisville Pediatrics. He is a clinical professor in pediatrics at the University of Louisville and is active in the American Academy of Pediatrics and its advocacy programs. He also works with the Coalition for Healthy Kentucky.

12 | K i T e Ta l e s | F a l l 2016Kosair Kids® Night at the Zoo was a ‘roaring’ good time!

Over 1,500 Kosair Kids® and their families showed up in their “merry, not scary” Halloween

best on Oct. 19 for our annual Kosair Kids® Night at the Louisville Zoo. Every October, Kosair Charities shuts down the zoo for one night so that children from our Special Kids Program, as well as our supported organizations, such as Heuser Hearing Institute, Visually Impaired Preschool Services and Spina Bifida Association of Kentucky, can go trick-or-treating with ease. Keeping the zoo closed to the general public during this event allows for a line-free and safe environment for kids of all abilities and their families to enjoy.

This event would not be possible without you, our generous donors. Without your monetary support

and time spent volunteering, many Kosair Kids® would have been unable to trick-or-treat this year. Each child who attended left with a big smile on their face and an even bigger bag of candy! We can’t wait until next year!

2016 Celebration of Philanthropy

On Sept. 8, we gathered at the Olmsted to celebrate the good work our donors do through

their gifts to Kosair Charities. This annual event honors members of our W. Barnett Owen Society, made up of people who have arranged planned gifts to leave a lasting legacy for Kosair Kids®; our 982 Society of donors, whose cumulative lifetime giving totals $10,000 or more; and our Platinum 1000 Club of generous people who pledge to give $1,000 or more to Kosair Charities annually. We also paid tribute to several friends of Kosair Kids® who passed away this year and who remembered Kosair Charities as one of their final acts of kindness.

As a pediatric ER physician with the University of

Louisville Department of Pediatrics, Dr. Keith Cross has been caring for patients in Louisville for 10 years. In that time, he has come to appreciate Kosair Charities as both a donor and medical professional. Beyond caring for children in the ER, Keith conducts research and helps train the next generation of physicians. “I know that when I support Kosair Charities, my donation has a multiplying effect. Kosair Charities invests in technology and equipment that not only enhance the quality of the care we can provide, but make us more effective in teaching future pediatricians, nurses and hospital staff,” he says. Keith knows firsthand how beneficial that training can be. His

first three years at the University of Louisville were spent in an advanced fellowship in pediatric emergency medicine. “I trained on the very first ultrasound machine that was purchased 15 years ago with assistance from Kosair

Charities,” he says. Ultrasound machines are especially useful in the pediatric ER. They allow doctors to look for internal bleeding, diagnose appendicitis and even detect increased brain pressure while limiting a child’s exposure to radiation. Keith says that grants from Kosair Charities have enabled the Department of Pediatrics to stay on the cutting edge of medical technology. Each month, 25 medical residents (physicians in training) benefit from equipment and

technology purchased with the help of Kosair Charities donors like you. One key piece of technology that Keith finds very helpful is video recording equipment for the trauma bay. Doctors can review footage with residents to discuss what they’re doing well and what they could improve. This not only ensures that the 150 to 200 children seen in the ER each day are well cared for, but also prepares their future doctors to provide the best care for generations to come. Keith says, “These investments allow me to not just take care of the kid in front of me, but to teach future physicians how to use these tools as well. The knowledge and skills they gain here will follow them throughout their medical careers, impacting countless children throughout the state.” We’re honored to partner with Keith to help ensure quality healthcare for Kosair Kids®.
