Why us? »Want to do something different to everyone else? »Want unique challenges and loads of variety? »Want to know you are helping keep our country safe?

The New Zealand Intelligence Community (NZIC) is a community of government agencies working together to build a safer and more prosperous New Zealand. We are committed to doing beyond ordinary work everyday to keep New Zealanders safe. We protect and enhance our country’s interest here and overseas. We investigate, we analyse and we advise.

The Government Communications Security Bureau (GCSB) forms part of the NZIC and has an exciting graduate programme for those looking for something different. What we do is not ordinary and we are looking for intelligent and enthusiastic graduates to join us in keeping New Zealanders safe, while also looking after the economic and wellbeing of New Zealand too.

The graduate programme has two streams:

1. An Analyst stream for one year, and

2. A Technical stream for sixteen months

During the programme you’ll learn more about our industry, while using your strong analytical and problem solving skills across a number of different parts of GCSB. Each year our new graduate cohorts are amazed with the new skills they pick up through our ongoing coaching and mentoring, and the diverse range of activities they are involved in.

What do we offer? ›A supportive team environment – we have a friendly, collegiate and inclusive

culture where you can focus and learn and differences are respected.

›Unique work – which involves thinking outside the box and coming up with original creative and analytical solutions. While we can’t tell you too much at this stage, we can tell you it won’t be like any other opportunity you can find in New Zealand!

›Variety with customised rotations – you will gain a broad industry understanding before deciding which area you want to specialise in. You will then have access to an amazing career pathway across a number of areas without the need to change employers.

›Extra benefits – flexible hours for work/life balance, a fun social club, in-house gym, extra annual leave, health insurance and eye checks are just some of our everyday perks.

›A permanent position at the end of the graduate programme.

Working with us also entails being comfortable about not talking to friends and family about what you do at work, or in some circumstances not even telling them where you work. Our organisation does protect state secrets and we take our roles seriously, so confidentiality is mandatory for everyone.

So if you are up for the challenge and want a career, not just a job, where no two days are ever the same … check out our website for more information to see if this is the career for you! Where else can you find a career which has great work stories which you can’t share … that takes a special sort of person to feel that pride – but say nothing!

Every day is different, we just can’t tell you how.

Meet challenges no one can know about.

Why you?We need a variety of skilled people in our industry and some of the skills we are looking for might surprise you. Do you have the following?

› Strong critical and analytical skills?

› Excellent verbal and written communication skills?

› A commitment to integrity and able to be discrete and diplomatic?

› A team player attitude?

› Proven academic success and broad life skills?

› A strong desire to keep New Zealand and New Zealanders safe?

We need: 1. Technical stream candidates with: Strong skills in cyber security, software engineering, systems engineering and network engineering. Ideally you will have completed, or be completing an undergraduate or postgraduate qualification in Computer Science, Information Technology or Engineering.

2. Analyst stream candidates with: Analytical and critical thinking abilities. You will have an aptitude for and interest in problem solving, and a specialty in languages or research. Ideally you will have completed, or be completing an undergraduate or postgraduate qualification in Foreign Languages, Mathematics/Statistics or any of the Science/Humanity disciplines.

If you are smart, insightful, articulate, inquisitive and an intuitive team player who loves a challenge then what are you waiting for? Apply today.

What now? Before applying – make sure you can say yes to the following entry criteria:

1. Eligible to apply – A New Zealand citizen for at least 10 years, or you must hold a NZ Permanent Residence or NZ Residency Class Visa and be a citizen of UK, USA, Canada or Australia for at least 10 years.

2. Security Check – Able to obtain and maintain a Top Secret Special (TSS) security clearance – usually this means you must have a 15 year checkable background in countries where meaningful and reliable checks can be done.

3. Discretion is important – Accept you cannot talk to anyone about your application with us at this stage – as this could affect your application, your future opportunities and your ongoing security clearance.

4. Get behind our mission – Supportive of, and identify with our mission to keep New Zealand safe.

5. Grade average – Have achieved a consistently high grade average in your relevant tertiary studies.

6. It’s a long process – Understand that this will be a long application process that will happen in the background. We will keep you updated throughout the process though, as we know it can be daunting waiting.

If you’re interested in taking the next step you will need to complete our application form, answer a few questions and provide a copy of your resume and academic record to date.

Apply now through nzic.govt.nz/beyondordinary

Is your experience your best qualification?

Frequently asked questions1. Why can’t I tell anyone I have applied with your organisation? This industry requires absolute discretion in order for you and your colleagues to do their jobs safely. Anyone interested in joining us, regardless of the role, are required to maintain a high level of secrecy. We are happy to go into more detail about how to manage this if you reach the interview stage. Until then it is best to not say anything to anyone as it can impact your application and future career.

2. What sort of work would I be doing? We can’t go into any details just yet but we can tell you that you will be working with the latest technology, doing a lot of research, lateral thinking and analysis. Depending on your background it could include: system administration, technical analysis, cyber threat analysis, system engineers, communication analysis, production analysis, data analysis and cryptanalysis to name just a few.

3. Where will I be based? You will most likely be based in one of our offices in Wellington, but there may be some travel involved at times to other offices nationally as well. Some may be based in other offices.

4. What does the recruitment process include?1. Apply – submit your application form, cover letter, resume and a copy

of your academic record to date through our website.2. Phone screen – we will call you if you have been shortlisted.3. Assessment Centre – assessing your problem solving, team player and

communication skills.4. Panel Interview – a behavioural and situational based interview.5. Reference checks/Psychometric assessments.6. Conditional Offer – subject to passing our vetting process. 7. Security Vetting – Top Secret Special clearance required.8. Unconditional Offer – confirmed by 1 December.

5. How long will it take to get through the recruitment process? Our process needs to be extremely thorough and this does mean it can take a while. You will need patience, but we will keep you up to date throughout the process. Often the most time consuming element is at the end of the process when we commence our detailed background vetting. This can take months, depending on your individual background, after the interview stage. You can help control how long it takes though by ensuring your personal referees complete their paperwork and return it ASAP. We will discuss how this works during your interview.

6. What do you look for in the vetting process? I’m not sure what to expect!

We have a statutory mandate to provide security vetting services to all NZ government agencies. This includes a series of background checks and assessments to ensure people entrusted with national protectively marked resources are suitable to have access, and demonstrate appropriate behaviour in both their personal and professional lives. It is an intrusive process – however your privacy and dignity are respected. The process is non-discriminatory and will go back 15 years for those over 33 years of age, or from the age of 18 for those under the age of 32.

You may worry that you have done something silly in your past, or have friends and family who may have an impact on your application. If this is the case please feel free to review our website for more details, or contact us if you would prefer a quick confidential chat and don’t exclude yourself without talking first. There are no guarantees until you have gone through the vetting process in full, however we are happy to discuss your options before you commence your application. The main point is that you are honest with us – even if it isn’t something you are comfortable talking about normally. And we can promise we don’t share.

7. What is the starting salary?Your initial salary would be around $50K, depending upon experience. Your future salary will then increase depending on what role you take on at the end of the programme and your yearly performance reviews.

8. Any quirky things I should know?We have strict IT policies which includes leaving all electronic equipment in a secure location, so you won’t have them within reach for the majority of the day. Can you cope without your mobile phone, smart watch etc? The upside is that you have 100% focus while at work and you can’t take your work home so you have a real work/life balance. It may take some time to adjust – but we have all got used to it, so you can too.

You will have a second family once you join us and since you can’t talk to others outside of the community about the details of your work, we encourage everyone to come along to our end of week social functions where you can unwind and debrief with your team before heading home.
