■ The annual research poster day was held on the 11th of May 2011 at Alfaisal University. The event included twenty-one research teams with each team presenting its respective poster to a panel of judges. The theme for this year’s poster day was “Human Capacity Building”. One might wonder what re-search posters have to do with human capacity building. Well, through learning experience, one can spread knowledge and by that build the learning compe-tence of humanity. The event was a huge success; it included elating posters from the Col-lege of Medicine, Science, and Engineer-ing. The top three posters were awarded at the closing ceremony. The winning poster, which inter-estingly was from the College of Engi-neering, was entitled “Intelligent Water Level Indicator Device.” This mini-invention was completed by Muham-mad Alrazaz and Naif Ghazal.

Too bad, a medical research team could not grab first place this time. The remaining winning posters were “Alfaisal University & Stress Lev-els: A Comparative Study” led by Abdal-lah Al-Ahaideb and “Bokhour: An Evolu-tion of a Prestigious Saudi Custom”, led by Abdulaziz Al-Kattan, which both came in second place. Having a draw in second place shows how competitive medical students are; they gave the judges a hard time to decide which poster deserves a better place.

There was a lot of variety in the posters; there were study-based post-ers, lab-based posters, and posters which merely outlined the basics of a certain area of interest. There were a lot of interesting posters that impressed the panel of judges. All participants were awarded with certificates at the end of the ceremony. ■

Research @ Alfaisal University: An Up-To-Date Students’ Perspective

■ Around two years ago, with enormous support from Alfaisal faculty and administration, the Alfaisal Medical Student Association (MSA) was able to lay the foundation of SPIRIT, the Alfaisal Summer Program for International Research Internship & Training. Many students undoubtedly benefited and continue to do so from this program, as it allows students to participate in courses of basic and clinical research techniques taking place at renowned medical institutions worldwide. So what kind of research activities are expected of the College of Medicine? “Research lab for neuroscience, physiology and animal facilities”, answers Afsan Bin Farid, a second year medical student at Alfaisal. When asked to comment on what he thinks are the potential obstacles, if any, in the development of this program, he said, “More money and effort is spent on adver-tising the college, and less on developing it”. Mr. Fahmi Abu Owaimer, Lab Specialist at Alfaisal University said that, “Lab space required for the establishment of a re-search lab may be a significant obstacle in this case, however, once the university’s infrastructure has been completed, this par-ticular issue of “space” shall be resolved”. When asked regarding students participation in future research projects, he replied, “Of course students will have the opportunity to take part in research at Alfaisal, and this makes our university unique in our region”. “It has only been 3 years since the inauguration of the university. It’s still in its crawling phase. Definitely, our college’s first priority is to provide a high class education which shall then be followed by research training and hands on experience in this field”, said Omair Choudhary, first year medical student at Alfaisal University. Eyad Marashli , a second year student, says, “A funding system for the research projects should be made clear based on set criteria for the acceptance of scientific proposals”, this shall allow, “Alfaisal students' ideas to become realistic, perfected and enhanced by our honourable faculty’s past research experience!”. Alfaisal University has also set up collaborations with King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Centre which allows Alfaisal medical students to take part in research projects carried out at the institution. Currently, many students from the third and second year medicine are participating in various research activities at the centre. ■ Reported by: Azhar Farooqui

■ Innovation is the key to change and “success” and “innovation” is what the Alfaisal Breast Cancer Team (ABCT) hold as a motto. The ABCT is a group of four students who originally were only assigned, at a regular community medicine class, to come up with a theoretical community-based research project and submit it at the end of the year. But these stu-dents took it further, they went out and did their research, invited female participants and carried out workshops about breast cancer awareness. They had the ultimate objective of actually driving a change in the community and help prevent the alarming rise in breast cancer in Saudi females.

Their hard work ultimately paid off. Their abstract entitled “Effectiveness of an Innovative Com-munity-Based Breast Cancer Aware-ness Workshop” was recognized by Leiden International Medical Student Conference as one of the top 15 ab-stracts out of 750 abstracts submitted worldwide.

Not only that, but they were also invited to orally present their ab-stract and were awarded a travel grant. On the 15th of March, the ABCT packed their bags and headed to Hol-land with one objective in mind, to represent Alfaisal University, Saudi Arabia and the region as a whole.

Breast Cancer Team: “Innovation” is Key to Change Once there, they were greeted

with utter respect at Leiden University. On the day of presentation, 26th of March, Abdullah AlShammari, the lead author, suited-up and prepared to pre-sent in front of students, professors, and judges from all over the globe. Proud of his achievement and confi-dent with his work, he walked up the stage, greeted everyone and took his first step towards international success and recognition. His introduction, method, results and conclusion re-ceived strong applause and the audi-ence seemed eager to ask questions. Never hesitant, Mr. AlShammari opened the floor for discussion and he managed to objectively answer the questions raised. Praised by the judges, he thanked the audience and wished every one the best of luck.

On the final day of this four-day conference, results were in, and the ABCT’s presentation was ranked one of the top 20 presentations. This story of innovation, hard-work and success doesn’t end here. The ABCT are planning to continue their work in raising breast-cancer awareness and holding work-shops for female partici-pants. More papers are expected to be published as many rounds of applause to these students are yet to come. ■

Student’s Voice: Khalid AlShehri What are your hobbies? Well, I love playing games and sports in my free time. Football, table tennis, “balot”, badminton, swimming, you name it! Who is your favourite professor at Alfaisal? I would pick Prof. Ahmed Yaqinuddin as my favourite; not only does he explain the learning objectives nicely, he is able to re-late the basics we took in Phase 1 with our Phase 2 learning ma-terial. Your research group recently published an article as a chapter in a book; how does it feel? It simply feels amazing! What’s even more interesting is that you are publishing an article in an international book while you are only a medical student! It definitely gives me the advantage of having more than one publication before I graduate and In-shaAllah this shall help me to become accepted in a good post graduate centre. Which medical field do you wish to pursue in the future? I plan to specialise in neuro-surgery. Why? Neuroscience is a field where a lot still remains to be discovered. Also, I would like to do research in the potential role of stem cells in the field of neuro-surgery. Which international football club do you support? Real Madrid! Mention an incident that really made you laugh out loud. Here is an incident that happened to me when I first went for summer to Lebanon. I was 13 at that time. I was admitted to a boarding school and we went to a field trip. I was walking on the street in my Bermuda shorts when I passed by a man who seemed to be drunk. The man saw me and said “Why didn’t you finish your trouser? Did your money finish or did the tailor die”! If you could meet someone living or dead, who would it be and why? Jose Mourinho! I love football and in my opinion he is one of the best football coaches ever. I want to meet him, observe the way he sets his strategies, and understand the reasoning behind his amazing game plans. Can you name one thing that happened in your life that made the biggest impact on who you are today? The first time I went to the hospital after I had a car accident. When I was admitted there I really admired the way the doctors treated me. From then on I had the passion of pursuing medi-cine as my career. Finally, any tip you would wish to share with your Alfaisal col-leagues? I advise them to study on a day-to-day basis. Do not leave eve-rything till the end. I myself try to study from the first day of every block but still end up piling loads of work to be covered just before the exam. This definitely causes some trouble for studying for exams.

Alfaisal Leadership: Dr. Bernhard Juurlink “you should leave this world better than you found it.”

Could you please tell us about your background in academia and your administrative experience? “I have been teaching since 1960s but became a faculty member in 1979. I became the department head of the Department of Anatomy and Cell Biology, and worked on developing the department. Later, I became an associate dean at the University of Saskatchewan.” What are your fields of interest in research? “Well, I have been accepted for a ---KACST fund, not yet granted, for testing a hypothesis that consuming phase II protein induc-ers, we have some evidence, would cause less gluconeogenesis. So we think this may be an alternative intervention for treating type II diabetes. Other projects include trying to understand better the metastatic behavior of brain tumors with one of my graduate students, which may lead to better treatment. The third area of interest is about X-ray effect on cells and whether the effect of X-ray toxicity is mediated by UV light emission from the tissues! The implication of this can be to localize tumors’ eradi-ation, or decrease the toxicity in surrounding tissue. “This is why research is such fun, you think of an idea in a unique or very different way, and you start testing and coming up with all kinds of tests to test its validity.” So what are your plans after leaving AU? “Semi-retirement on Vancouver Island while spending some time in Saskatchewan pursuing research.” What were the reasons and motives behind coming to teach at Alfaisal? “After 8 years of administrative work, I was getting tired of how difficult it is to make change, and I was looking for a change. I wanted an area not so resistant to change due to bureaucracy and found Alfaisal to be a place that can be ideal; new place with no tradition, and hence no bureaucracy – still, much can be done to reduce the bureaucracy here. In March of 2008, I received a letter of invitation from this new university in Riyadh and I discussed the issue with my wife, and we both came to visit in July of 2008. When I came, there was only me, Dr. Khraibi, Dr. Mutabagani, and Dr. Paul. I had actually never taught these topics to undergraduate students. All of us worked day in and day out to prepare our lectures. We wondered how we’d be able to turn these undergrad students into medical students but eventually we did!” What do you think is Alfaisal’s, medically speaking, prognosis? “I was promised a western style university but constant dialogue between senior faculty and administration seems to be absent, rendering the faculty voice and efforts worthless. The curriculum is not well defined even with the university’s affiliation with a leading advisory team but progress is happening and change is coming.” Why are you leaving Alfaisal? “My disappointment is that I don’t feel that I am a full member of Alfaisal, because there is no faculty senate. We always had a faculty government that deals with academics, not with budget or administration, but deal with academics…The professors have almost no say on how the university should be run. We also find it difficult not to have a social life, especially the fact that family and friends are not here and my wife’s friends, Mrs. Ganguly and Mrs. Butler have left too.” What is it that makes a student-centered university in your opinion, and do you see Alfaisal as thus? “Student centered does not mean that the students get to decide on how the university should be run but the university should aim to build the university around the students. I would speak on behalf of the founding faculty that they have a good desire to make the students independent learners. Students should understand their position and what it means to be a student centered university.” “Voice Yourself” for Med Times! “The students as whole are great, so I would tell you all to keep up your efforts that turn you into independent learners, wanting to generate knowledge and make a difference in the community – keep that up, because in the end you should leave this world better than you found it.”

■ On Wednesday the 27th of April, 2011, Alfaisal’s Social and Development Committee (SDC) had their biggest event of the year, actually, the biggest social event since the beginning of the university! Kashta was not for a batch or a college; but for everyone! More than 400 people from all batches, colleges, UPP, high schools came with their friends and families for Kashta. More than 25 volunteers, SDC members, led by Adel Rajab, Ammar Awaad, and Adel Helmi, facilitated the events all day long. The event started around noon and buses were arranged to bring people from on campus to the event. Kashta was at Al Reem International Circuit on the outskirts of Riyadh. There, everyone had the chance for go-karting, paintball, and mini-games until 8pm. Lunch was provided by Baby Burger. The evening event was the popu-lar stand-up comedy show with the host, Khaled Khalifa. SDC gave the chance for two students to show their come-dic talents with jokes, imitations and some ‘constructive sarcasm’ for a big audience.

Of course, Luxury Events continued their wildly successful professional standup comedy series with provid-ing the talented Khaled Khalifa as host. Sony Saudi Arabia also supported this event by giving away two free Play Sta-tion 3s that were raffled off for the audience among many other gifts.

Understandably, the first ever event had its glitches but an optimistic SDC team promised to make ma-jor improvements next time. ■ Reported by: Aman Inayah

■ As a change to the demanding academic atmosphere of the university, the Social and Development Committee (SDC) in collaboration with the Medical Student Association (MSA) organized the first Alfaisal Chess Tournament! Soccer fans just turn the page! A total of 32 participants, including 12 faculty members from Alfaisal and the UPP took part in this battle of the brains. To everyone’s surprise, none of the faculty members could make it to the final of the tournament. Yup, that’s how awesome the students were! The final match, which took place on April 6, proved to be a nerve racking one as Ahmed Abu-Zaid, third year medical student, beat Abdulhameed Baddawi, second year, with a difference of only one kill point! The second runner-up match was won by Ric Dawson, UPP faculty member, when he beat Mohammed Allababidi, second year medical student. The top three winners were awarded trophies and gift vouchers by Prof. Khaled Al-Kattan, Dean of the College of Medicine ■

“Although several students com-plained that the smell of cigarette smoke fill the parking area; nothing has been done. Hence, I would like to voice myself: our university is a respectable place and it is about time we imple-ment some changes around here. This message is for the university family and everyone else who uses our univer-

sity facilities. Should we be leaving food on the ground? Isn’t there an appropriate smoking area on campus, then why do we smoke in the parking lot? Should we be smoking in the un-ventilated stairwells so the smell remains there forever? Why do we not park our cars appropriately so that one car does not take more than one parking spot? Why do we just take the lib-

This questions being posed, I urge all those concerned to try to provide a better smoking area where smokers can have enough space, and the designated areas should be specified and clarified, and of course air conditioned!”—Bara Al-makadma, third year medical student.

■ In 1905 a new approach was cre-ated; the same one Partners Harvard Medical International (PHMI) decided to implement in Alfaisal University within its College of Medicine in 2008: to rely less on didactic teaching and grow more of an innovative edu-cational model that in fact attracted most of us students. Since then the facility's main aim was to try and value us medics like no other. Our opinions were to matter, our feedback was essential, and most of all our voice could actually make difference. Nonetheless, the system

■ Pick up any Alfaisal brochure or hear one of its reps speak about the university and the term “student-centered” is used repeatedly. So is it? In short, the vision is there and steps are being taken to achieve the ultimate goal. However, what does the word mean and does Al-faisal provide the service? In the opening years of the university, students were told that the university is student-centered because students have the right to voice their concerns through evalua-tions and surveys and that a problem based learning system was the core of the educational curriculum.

Great, but is that what a student-centered uni-versity is? Students expect the best quality edu-cation from a university that takes 100,000SR of their parent’s hard-earned cash. So when asked what can be improved to make Alfaisal student centered, we stress the fact that our quality of education should not be compromised. Yet it worries us that the professors are not participating in the researches they were promised, hence they might be reluctant to put in the maximum effort to teach the students. In addition, the university must provide counselors to help guide students choose the best-fit classes and the smoothest route to graduation. As a new and upcoming university, it is mandatory that the administration be transpar-ent with accreditation, academic stability, and the future of the university. It is uncanny when students spend two years studying a subject that suddenly no longer exists or when a library is a year past due. Speaking of the library, where are the tutoring programs? Students are left to fend for themselves, sometime barely scarping by. The university needs academic resource centers with paid and dedicated tutors. Furthermore, the university has made good on its promises of

providing social outlets for the stu-dents, hence the creation of many popular student clubs such as the So-cial Development Committee (SDC). However, ask any student on campus and he will tell you that a rec-reation center is needed to relieve the stress of class work or garden to enjoy nature or even a relaxation room to be able to take a power nap on those long days. Thus, Alfaisal has definitely shown signs of being student-centered but there is still a very great margin for improvement.■

could be evaluated against a general criterion to attain if this was really true. Initially, I believe the majority of stu-dents at the College of Medicine (COM) do rely on active rather than passive learning; they also try to professionally maintain a responsible and accountable attitude regarding our learning system as a whole just like they are required to do so. Together, these two conditions greatly promote the growth and development of a pleasing system that maintains the existence of mutual respect among the students and profes-sors. However, unfortunately this system also seems to have its downfalls, in which there has been a lack of what is described as a "reflexive" approach on behalf of both learners and tutors. Instead, not all seem ready to cooperate; in-deed, neither do some seem ready to accept such a new system of learning since it has never been emphasized by schools in the Kingdom from before. In addition, autonomy by the stu-dents has not been effectively sensed due to

internal misunderstandings between the students themselves. Having mentioned the above, up until today, the Medical Students Association (MSA) at Alfaisal has been playing an integral role in collaborating with powers responsible of high orders at the university to soften relations between the Dean of Medicine as well as the professors. Students should acknowledge this and work on guiding each other into a better learning experience, that I believe holds significant opportunities for us in the future; opportunities cou-pled with a self-directing, experiential, as well as a self-centered approach! ■

The Press, to show our appreciation to our readers, and also to impress you so you like us more, decided to hold a “best stu-dent article competition” whereby students send us a 350 word essay answering the question, “Do you think Alfaisal is student-centered? Why? How can we improve on it?” and the top three articles, judged by your awesome Press members depending on content, organization, approach, and grammar. The following three are the winning entries. We plan to hold this contest every

issue with different topics! And hey! If you win, you can always share your prize with us!

■ A study was conducted by myself and some of my colleagues under the supervision of Dr. Hasan Rajab on the April of 2010 to determine whether the students at AU knew what it truly means to be in a stu-dent-centered university, to ensure that AU is fulfilling its duties towards the students, and to obtain feedback from the students and instructors on how AU might improve toward Stu-dent Centered Education (SCE). This was done by distributing a survey to all of AU students and by interviewing selected staff members. The students and staff were asked about current and future Alfaisal policies, as well as their thoughts on what should be changed or altered to meet the standards of SCE. The conclusion of this study is that AU is not aware of the stan-dards of what is supposed to be a Student Centered Education (SCE) in most of its aspects. And more importantly, most of the students are not aware of what SCE actually means. The main reasons behind this is the fact that there is no clear definition of the SCE

College of Medicine On: The Alfaisal Cafeteria

that AU is following; all of the Provost, Deans and the different staff members that were in-terviewed had different definitions of a SCE and how SCE at AU should be like. Moreover, there is no clear definition of SCE to follow in any kind of official papers in which AU students and faculty members may refer to in order to base their decisions on. I believe that fixing this exact issue will boost AU many steps toward being a SCE based univer-sity. My further step after completing the mentioned study was to look at examples of SCE based universities and how they are apply-ing it in the perspective of student rights and authorities compared with Teacher Centered Education (TCE). This step is not yet completed, however, so far Alfaisal University seemed to be in the middle between TCE and SCE. I believe that this is a very appalling situation for the fact that most of the advan-tages of each type of education are achieved only when it is exclusively focused on. If you take any of the aspects mentioned, it will be totally impaired if we were to take both the SCE and TCE part of it. For example, SCE requires students to be active learners while TCE dis-rupts that. Having this implemented in some courses/cases, and not in others gives the stu-dent the hesitation to ask for their rights and thus feel that it is more of a TCE and that they can do nothing about it. As a matter of fact, having such confu-sion in any environment, and specifically an academic environment, neither the teacher nor the student know their exact rights, is a huge obstacle that must be eradicated. In conclusion, it is expected for a newly established university with this type of educa-

tion to face such problems at the start. However, Alfaisal University does not have an excuse now and it should de-cide clearly and fast whether it is going toward a SCE or TCE before the begin-ning of next year. We have great capabilities; great faculty members, great students and we are only missing the effort to search for examples of SCE and estab-lish them once and for all in a way that suits our great Alfaisal University. ■
