Message from the NEO

Dear IFMSA members,

It is a great pleasure to have the chance to introduce you to our associations’ (MedSIN-Sudan) first informational booklet highlighting briefly what the local committees or LC’s have to offer incoming students as far as the LC’s history, the academic program, social program, lodging and boarding so that the incoming students have a general understanding of what to expect.

Why choose Sudan?FromFrom a clinical standpoint we offer the incoming students an experi-ence that they will not find anywhere else. Students can perform ex-aminations on patients, give needles & cannulas and suture wounds. Sudan is also a tropical country with numerous tropical diseases with specialized centers and hospitals for the most common diseases. There are over 20 hospitals in Khartoum alone boasting internationally known doctors and professors, some of which are more than willing to work with the incoming students.Sudan is a country known for the diversity of its people. There are numerous tribes, languages, traditions and cultures. Despite the multicultural nature of the people they share the same concept of hospitality wherever you go. Because Sudan occupies a large amount of land the weather ranges from Mediterranean like in the north-east, desert like in most places and rainforests in the south-west.

Sudan is not known for its tourism but it doesn’t mean we have a deficit of tourist attractions. We have the oldest pyramids in the world (in Marawe), the longest river in the world (the river Nile), the largest wildlife reserve in Africa (the Dinder national park) and a seaside worth visiting as it is beaming with marine life and un-touched coral reefs.

The MedSIN-Sudan Exchange team has made great efforts in the previous months to try to upgrade the previous set standards to insure that our incomings receive the best exchange program we have to offer. We have 5 LCs available:

1/ University of Khartoum.2/ Ahfad University.3/ University of Bakhtalruda.4/ Omdurman Islamic University.4/ Omdurman Islamic University.5/ Al-Zaim Al-Azhari University.

Throughout the booklet you will come across our MedSIN-Sudan exchange team with their official contacts and they will be more than happy to answer any inquiries concerning the program in their universities.

We are waiting to see you in our land

Yours always,Yours always,Amro Abuagla National Exchange Officer

History of the University

An Elementary School for Girls — 1907:

AA young Sudanese man, Babiker Badri, had the radical idea, at the time, that girls should also receive at least a minimum education. In 1907, Babiker began his secular school for girls in a mud hut with nine of his own daughters and eight of those of his neighbors.

The Ahfad College for Women — 1966

Babiker's son, Yusuf, carried on his father's legacy, and Babiker's son, Yusuf, carried on his father's legacy, and in 1966 established the Ahfad University for Women in Omdurman. It began with only 23 students and a staff of three including Yusuf. Ahfad now has an enrollment of over 5,000 students. From the site of the original mud-brick boy's school, Ahfad has spread to adjacent areas and now occupies a modern, new campus. His son, son, Dr. Gasim Badri, has continued to expand Ahfad's curriculum and innovations in teaching.

Full University Status — 1995

Based on the expansion of its curriculum and student body, the Sudan National Council for Higher Educa-tion granted full university status to Ahfad in 1995.
