MEDITERRANEAN INTERIORS
Mediterranean decorating style originated in Northern Mediterranean countries like Spain,
Greece, Italy
Sometimes referred to as Spanish Modern
sandy and warm color schemes reflect the beauty of Mediterranean coasts
besides sandy colors options can also be sea and sky hues, terra cotta, lavender and yellow
the mission of the color scheme is to make the interior design in warm Mediterranean style
rough earthy textures make the style creates an aged look
wooden ceilings
marble flooring
ornate furniture and accessories
tile is also a common decorating style
Mosaics are seen in accessories like tables and mirrors
Columns, plaster moldings and cornices are also common
Fabrics and tapestry also add warmth to the style
evokes the romance and cornucopia of smells, tastes and colors on southern coast of Europe
the region’s casual and friendly lifestyle is reflected in the relaxed design, rustic furniture and
wall textures
Mediterranean Design Elements
- refers, roughly, to the design style of south of Spain, Greece and Italy. This region is known for its
turquoise waters, sparkling sunlit days and vibrant produce and flowers.
-Mediterranean design is more similar to Tuscan Design; carefree and casual, emphasizing the colors
and textures found in the surrounding landscape.- Nature is apparent in the architectural elements and furnishings
-Terra cotta tiles, rough-cut stone and pine wood are all used liberally
Colors of Mediterranean Style Interior Design
- Colors are vibrant and Earthy
-Yellows, oranges and deep reds mirror the spectacular seaside sunsets
-Lavender, deep purple (aubergine) and cornflower yellow evoke the field f flowers that cover the
foothills
-Greens from lush forest green to light mint green, reflect the lush countryside
Textures and Fabrics
- Rough and earthy
-walls are made of textured white plaster or stucco
-floors are covered roughly finished tile or plain pine planking
-large dark wooden ceiling beams are commonly used in stark contrast to the white-washed stucco walls
-water is another common design element; many European homes include a courtyard fountain or
water feature. North American homeowners capture this feel with a ceramic wall fountain

Furniture and Accessories
-Mediterranean-style furniture reflects the casual lifestyle and community of the Mediterranean
-Light pine furniture is a signature of this design style, as are large pieces, such as a plank kitchen table,
suitable for eight to twelve diners. Mediterranean kitchens are always open to neighbors and friends
- Large, usually pine, armoires are common (they were a necessity in 18th
and 19th
century homes that
had no closets) In modern homes, these massive pieces can double as entertainment centers or linen
closets
- Accessories are rustic and colorful
-door and furniture hardware are often made of rough- hewn iron

NEO CLASSICAL INTERIORS
Neo-classical designers gradually eliminated the numerous curves of the rococo style in favor of
the straight outlines of classical furniture
neo-classical artisans used thin pieces of plain wood arranged in geometric designs
much neo classical furniture was inspired by classical motifs discovered in the mid-1700
a number of English furniture makers adopted Adam’s neo-classical style
(George Hepplewhite and Thomas Sheraton prepared design books that popularized the style)
much of the furniture of the period was painted in matt colors
for unpainted furniture, satinwood was popular except in the dining room ,where mahogany
was preferred
furniture was generally simple and delicate, with straight legs
Great advances in upholstery techniques, these include air-filled mattresses and spring
cushioning. Seats were padded with a firm, resilient stuffing
In France the upholstery had a domed, stuffed shape whereas in England the upholstery had a
domed, squarer profile produced by tufting
chairs covered with expensive materials and protected with loose covers
Neo-Classical Furniture and Fabrics
- Designs on furniture are refined simplicity

- Cylindrical legs for tables and chairs, often gilded and painted
-satinwood and mahogany in use

-Damasks, moirés, stamped velvets, striped fabrics

Neo-Classical Colors
- A richly colored background on walls or ceiling with delicate plasterwork details picked out in white or
a strong color
-Pale and medium green, lilac, apricot, strong blue, dark green and terracotta (“Etruscan Red”)
-The colors are strong and brilliant

ART DECO
Art deco style interior is a streamlined, geometric style which often includes furniture pieces
with curved fronts, mirrors, clean lines, chrome hardware and glass.
began as a modernist response in opposition to Art Nouveau which featured elaborate, flowing
natural forms plus imagery and tiffany lamps
makes used of angular, balanced geometric shapes
Art Deco employs unique materials such as Aluminum, Inlaid wood, Lacquer, Shagreen, Stainless
Steel, Zebra skin
