I love spring…I am not referring to moving or jumping suddenly or rapidly upward or forward; nor am I referring to a resilient
device, typically a helical metal coil…not even a place where water or oil wells up from an underground source.
What I am referring to is the season after winter and before sum-mer, in which vegetation begins to appear! That is why I love our April edition.
We've talked to the movers and shakers who can help you get your home ready for the season. June and Steve Kasidonis of Kasidonis Heating & Cooling talk air condi-tioners and Gridiron Guys explain the steps to a fabulous new roof. Bennett’s and Swiss Country Lawn & Crafts showcase the best pieces for setting up a beautiful outdoor space. Plus we've covered some of the fun county events from the past few months, in-cluding the Medina Ice Festival, For the Love of Chocolate and the Chippewa Lions Club Polar Bear Jump.
A little teaser to keep you wanting more -- our May issue will be about the “how to” of planning your wedding and travel.
As always, we are inspired by our community. Please send your news and views to me at [email protected].

MEDINA HIGH SCHOOL BOYS LACROSSE TEAM GIVES BACK
The Medina High School boys lacrosse team hosted its annual pasta dinner fundraiser in January at the Medina Moose Club. Area businesses, including Dan's Dogs, Santosuossos and Rise Fitness supported the team with donations of food, gift cards and other items to stock baskets for the raffle. The event raised about $8,500, some of which will be used for team apparel, equipment, team building activities and tournament fees. The team also donated money to the family of a former teammate who is battling cancer. The Medina lacrosse family delivered all unused food and serviceable products from the event to the Salvation Army. Fundraiser volunteer and team mom, Kelly Wesner said, "While the event's primary pur-pose was to fundraise, it provided an opportunity for our community to support our young adults, it gave our young adults an opportunity to learn the value of giving back to the community, and it allowed all of us to experience a sense of team and community cohesion.”
KIWANIS MEMBER HONORED The Kiwanis Club of Medina honored Wadsworth attorney Linda
Hoffmann, managing partner of Palecek, McIlvaine, Hoffmann & Morse Co. LPA, with a George F. Hixon Fellowship for her ongoing help, generosity, commitment, and inspiration to the local club. In Hoffmann’s honor, a donation of $1,000 was made to the Kiwanis International Foundation. Hoffmann, a resident of Montville Township, championed the Kiwanis Christmas Carol fundraiser the last four years featuring a collaboration of local community leaders, club members, and high school Key Clubs. Proceeds provided winter clothing for over 90 Medina students grades K-12. There are four Kiwanis clubs serving the Medina community and supporting service and leadership opportunities for youth through area K Kids, Builders Clubs, and Key Clubs.

Gridiron Guys RAISE THE ROOF
ARTICLE NANCY JOHNSON PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED
Renovate & Refine
Spring is the time to get those outdoor projects started. If a new roof is on your to-do list, Bill
Lonjak Jr., co-owner of Gridiron Guys in Brunswick and an expert in roof installations, discusses the steps to a new, safe and secure roof installation.
WHAT ARE THE FIRST SIGNS OF WEAR
AND TEAR ON A ROOF?
You’ll start seeing the granules falling off the shingles. That’s the first sign they’re getting old and brittle.
WHAT’S THE NEXT STEP?
Don’t wait until your roof starts leaking. As soon as the granules loosen, it’s time to have a reputable roofing contractor inspect your roof. The contractor will look for those loose granules and cracked shingles.
WHAT ARE SOME OTHER PROBLEMS A
CONTRACTOR MIGHT FIND?
There are two types of weather issues – one, of course, is Mother Nature at work aging and deteriorating the roof. Then there are severe weather incidents, like storms and high winds, that can cause trouble. Airborne algae and lichens can start growing on the roof. Lichens are destructive -- they grow into a shingle and peel it off. Algae doesn’t harm a shingle, but it’s unsightly.
IF MY ROOF NEEDS REPLACEMENT, WHAT
CAN I EXPECT FROM MY CONTRACTOR?
Your contractor will give you an esti-mate and recommend products based on your budget. There are several types of roof ing materials to choose from. Three-tab shingles have been around for more than a hundred years, but the industry is phasing out that style and moving towards a more architectural look. The new shin-gle is thicker, adds dimension, comes in a variety of colors and is more attractive. You can choose shingles such as weath-ered wood, bark wood, Williamsburg slate, pewter gray, charcoal, Mission brown, hickory and more. There are hundreds of styles to choose from. Most manufacturers will offer a standard series and a designer series, which will have more color selections.
WHEN CAN I EXPECT THE WORK TO BEGIN?
The project should begin within 1 – 2 months, and maybe even sooner. Gridiron Guys specializes in the one-day roof turn-around. But there are some cases where it takes a little longer.
WHAT HAPPENS DURING THE
ROOFING PROCESS?
Reputable contractors will start the project by protecting your landscape, f lower beds, porch, deck and patio
before they begin the tear-off process. They will haul away all of the old materials. Some contractors bring in a dumpster, but Gridiron Guys brings in a rolling trailer to remove the roof ing debris immediately.
The contractor will inspect the roof deck and replace any rotted or weak boards. Then the installation begins. Once the roof is done, your contractor should sweep the area around your home to remove debris and nails. Gridiron Guys performs a magnet sweep to remove nails. Not every contractor does that; in fact, we have heard complaints about contractors leaving a lot of nails behind. Our magnet sweep alleviates that problem. Once the clean-up is finished, we perform a thor-ough inspection of the job with the home-owner present.

Ah, beautiful spring. You’re ready to clean
the grill, plant the flowers and bring out the lawn chairs. You’re ready for the warm weather ahead, but is your air conditioner?
“The most important thing to remember is that your air condition-ing unit has sat outside all winter long” says June Kasidonis, owner with husband Steve of Kasidonis Heating & Cooling in Brunswick, “If your Freon level is low, even by one pound, it can cause damage and other prob-lems to your air conditioner and can cost you more to run. We strongly recommend a clean and tune before you start it up or shortly after.”
Besides low Freon, any number of prob-lems could be found in the unit -- animals may have built nests in it, leaves could be clogging it, spiders could be in the contactor. “A check-up now will allow your air conditioner to run as efficiently as possible this summer and will extend the life of the unit,” says June, “A good percentage of our service calls stem from something that could have been typically caught earlier during a clean and tune.”
“If you have a unit that has a leak that you recharge every year, you may want to consider a replacement with a new efficient air conditioning unit because the cost of R-22 Freon is going up significantly,” says Steve, “The new units use A410A Freon, a cleaner, more efficient and much less expensive Freon.”
Before you purchase a new air conditioner from Kasidonis, one of the company’s professional comfort specialists will visit your home to review your needs, go over your options and discuss price ranges. “They will work with your budget to come up with the right solution for your home,” says June.
Kasidonis carries top name brands Trane and Carrier. “We also offer a wide variety of indoor air quality products to fight indoor air pollutants such as dust mites, pet allergies and common germs,” Steve says, “One of the newer products is the Air Scrubber. The unit usually sells for more than $1,250. Our special introductory price for the Air Scrubber is $890.”
Kasidonis offers financing options for anything from a service call to a new system with 0% or low interest payments up to 60 months.

Steve Bennett worked for his father for ten years selling and installing swing sets from other
companies. He recognized the struc-ture and safety of the sets could be improved. He also thought the sets should be made modular, allowing parents to add features as their children grew for years of inter-active play. Steve's idea became UltraBuilt, Bennett's own line of children's forts and swing sets, made right here in Ohio.
"We started with three forts and now have more than 12, with thousands of combinations.," said Julie Bennett, "The wood is environ-mentally friendly and we have the best warranty in the industry. Twenty-one years later and we are still going strong. My in-laws started the busi-ness in 1974. When they retired, Steve and I took over."
UltraBuilt swing sets offer many options including a rock wall, super wave slide, turbo slide, fire pole and swing bridge. Sets can be custom made to your specifi-cations. All sets are built to last more than a generation using 100% rot-resistant environmentally-responsible treated southern pine, high grade prebuilt components and old fashioned craftsmanship. The company strives for excellence and accuracy in each step of production with every piece of lumber handled, cut, and smoothed by a skilled Ohio craftsman.
The Bennetts sell outdoor furniture, pavilions, pergolas, gazebos and storage buildings. Indoors, they offer a dog and cat boarding and grooming service plus Smartickles, a 2,000 sq. ft. educational toy store featuring toy brands

If you're looking for something interesting to do this spring, take a drive to beauti-
ful Sugarcreek, Ohio in Amish country. The township, originally settled by immi-grants from Switzerland, has a rich blend of Swiss culture. Check out the world's largest cuckoo clock and the Alpine Hills Museum, comprising three floors of dis-plays and exhibits of the Swiss and Amish cultures. Enjoy Swiss architecture, local-ly-made Swiss cheese and an annual Swiss Festival. VillageOfSugarcreek.com
It was Abraham Shane who originally named the Sugarcreek area Shanesville in 1814. Shanesville was a small town, located near the intersection of two Indian trails. Today, those trails are now known as Ohio State Routes 93 and 39.
Shanesville attracted a concentration of German and Swiss descendants because its climate and countryside reminded settlers of their homeland. When the railroads roared into the area in the mid-1880s, immigrants flooded into Shanesville. Eventually the town's name was changed to Sugarcreek.
One of the not-to-be-missed attractions of Sugarcreek is Swiss Country Lawn & Crafts, a family-owned business.
Established in 1989, the company offers a large collection of Amish-made lawn furni-ture, gazebos, swing sets and garden décor in a 6200 sq. ft. showroom. You'll find chairs, gliders and swings made with select-grade, pressure treated southern yellow pine. You'll want to check out the colorful Adirondack chairs for your deck, patio or porch. These stylish polyethylene chairs will not crack or mildew and can withstand seasonal elements.
Swiss Country Lawn & Crafts is a great place to take the whole family -- a play-ground and friendly animals are also on the premises. And while you're there, be sure to stop in the gift shop where you'll find coun-try crafts, patio light sets, painted picture frames, wall art, window fixtures, beautiful

Are you suffering from lack of energy, headaches, allergies, mental confusion/fogginess, or digestive irregularity?
If you exhibit any of these symptoms, you may have an
unhealthy colon. Treatment is available.
I signed up for the 12 week program because I needed to make major life changes for
improved health. I was trapped in a serious sugar addiction. After looking at many diet programs, I liked the holistic approach consisting of proper

WADSWORTH'S BOOTH MORE THAN A COACH
ARTICLE RICK NOLAND PHOTOGRAPHY RON SCHWANE
Local Limelight
Wadsworth High girls' basketball coach Andrew Booth and wife Rachel have two
biological children, but their extended family runs into the hundreds.
Daughter Peyton, a standout player for her father at Wadsworth and 2014 Medina County Senior Female Athlete of the Year, is a sophomore playing basketball at the University of New Hampshire, and son Alec is a senior on the boys' varsity high school team.
Then there are kids like 2015-16 team mem-bers Jodi Johnson, Sophia Fortner and Laurel Palitto, plus kids-turned-adults like Jen (Uhl) Martin, Lindsay Tenyak and Cassie Schrock, to name just a few. All came to view 49-year-old Andrew Booth as more than a basketball coach.
"He's so passionate about the game," says Jodi Johnson, Wadsworth's most recent star and an Ashland University recruit. "He's kind of like a dad to every single one of us. He's willing to push us to do our best, but he knows how to have fun."
Laid-back and humble but quietly confident and perfectly capable of getting his point across, Booth also knows how to win. Now in his 11th season at Wadsworth, he holds the Medina County career record with more than 225 girls' basketball victo-ries. Add his seven seasons at Mansfield Madison and Booth owns more than 330 wins.
But more impressive than six Suburban League titles in a row and six consecutive district championships has been the way Booth has con-nected with his players.
Martin, who played at Bowling Green State University after graduating from Wadsworth in 2007, has witnessed this from a unique per-spective. She was entering her junior year at Wadsworth when Booth took over prior to the 2005-06 season and is in her fourth year as one of his assistants.
"He definitely changed the program, and he did it in a way no one expected," she says. "He
finds a way to reach and get on people, but in a calm, loving way. He can tell you your defense is not good and have you laughing. He makes you want to get better. He really finds a way to get the best out of the girls, and he does it in a way that they want to do it."
Truth be told, Booth never set out to coach girls' basketball. He just wanted to coach basket-ball, period.
A 6-foot-5 forward at tiny Lucas High -- there were 47 students in his 1985 graduating class -- Booth went on to score 1,000 points at Malone University. He then spent two seasons as an assistant at Malone and served as a boys' varsity assistant at Mansfield St. Peter's and Crestline high schools before landing the girls' head coaching job at Madison, his wife's alma mater, in 1998.
"I had no intention or thought of switching to the girls," he says. "But at that point, I wanted to be a head coach."
After seven successful seasons at Madison, Booth landed the Wadsworth job. His children -- the biological ones -- were beginning grade school and he didn't want to disrupt their educa-tion later on, so it was the perfect time to make a leap of faith and become coach of the Grizzlies, who already had a storied past.
"I knew enough to know they had a very good program, a very good tradition," Booth says. "I didn't know a lot. I decided, 'What the heck? What do I have to lose?'"
As it turned out, nothing. Booth has an .850 winning percentage with the Grizzlies, who were ranked No. 1 in Ohio for a chunk of this season and entered the postseason with a solid shot at reaching the D-I state tournament for the first time since 2005-06, Booth's first season in charge.
"We took a chance on it," Booth says of his family's move to Wadsworth, "and it's turned out to be pretty good."
Booth, who remains as driven as ever, doesn't plan on going anywhere anytime soon.
"His drive is based on helping kids reach their full potential on a day-to-day basis," says 25th-year Wadsworth assistant Mark Postak. "Would he like to win a state title? I think he'd like the kids to win a state title. Whatever he does, it's all about the kids."
Noland is the assistant sports editor at The (Medina
County) Gazette.

A BEAUTIFUL MAKEOVER AT SALON EVANGELENE
Salon Evangelene's master stylist & makeup artist Sherrie gave me a makeup makeover using all Jane Iredale Cosmetics. She started by prepping my skin with Smooth Affair Primer to smooth and soothe my skin and reduce inflammation. The result? A smooth canvas for Sherrie to work her magic. Sherrie chose Glow Time BB cream in BB7 for my warm-toned skin, followed by a pressed powder for a flawless foundation.
Next Sherrie focused on my brown eyes, applying Eye Sheer in Champagne all over the lid. Eye Sheers are a great primer before any eye shadow, or they can be used alone. Sherrie highlighted under my brow with Oyster Pure Pressed Eyeshadow Cream across the lid and Cappuccino in the crease. Sherrie also accented the crease with Merlot PurePressed Eyeshadow for a pop of color. She completed the look with Black Ice Longest Lash Mascara. Full brows are all the rage right now, so Sherrie filled and shaped my brows with the Blonde Bitty Brow Kit.
My lips were lined with Nude Lip Pencil, and enhanced with Kir Royale Puregloss lip gloss, for a perfect pout.Sherrie set all of my beau-
tiful makeup with Jane Iredale’s D20 Hydration Spray. These ECO certi-fied sprays provide much needed skin hydration while setting all the mineral makeup, for all day beauty. It was a great day-time look and my skin felt so fresh and soft.
HOW TO MAKE
PURCHASING A VEHICLE
A POSITIVE EXPERIENCE
I log a lot of miles behind the wheel and find myself in a dealership every 3-5 years. I love the whole purchasing and negotiat-ing experience of vehicle shopping. I spend days researching before I walk into a dealership. I want to share some tips for being a happy, satisfied customer.
Some top factors to take into consideration: First, determine the right vehicle for you. Assess your needs by which options are important to you, your must haves, the type of driving you do, road and weather conditions, cargo space, passenger seating and fuel mile-age. Next, research your vehicle make and model choices and decide whether new, used or leased is the best buying option for you. Take note of current manufacturer and dealer incentives, rebates and finance options, set your budget and call your bank to know interest rates.
I prefer to shop local. Since Medina Auto Mall is my customer, I called them first. I was directed to Lionel Urquhart. Lionel and I spent question and answer time on the phone and narrowed my choices to the Buick Encore and the Buick Verano. We then scheduled a test drive.
Your test drive should mimic your daily driving habits and terrain. You want to really get a feel for the vehicle. I suggest you get in and get out of it to see that you can do so with ease, sit in the back seats if you'll be hauling passengers, drive hills, curves, highways and urban streets. I believe you must be one with your vehicle.
Always work with a sales person you trust and be sure they thor-oughly explain the features and benefits of the vehicle. Lionel was excellent to work with, helping me to easily choose the Buick Encore. Originally I thought my budget would allow me to only purchase an older model, but because I researched the current rebates and incentives I was able to purchase the 2015 model -- a real plus! The entire team at Medina Auto Mall, from the first conversation, test drive, price negotiations and hands-on demo at delivery made my six hour experience fun. (By the way, six hours is the average buying time.) I am definitely pleased with Medina Auto Mall, my Buick Encore and…free car washes!
