MedicReS COURSE Introduction to Clinical Research “MedicReS aims to educate researchers and provoke discussion about good scientific method, statistics, ethics, publication, and education. Faced with stifling bureaucracy, competition for funds and employer pressure to deliver results, finding the time and space to produce the best research can seem an arduous process. “ The Lancet. PURPOSE MedicReS Education Center in Vienna To improve the quantitative and analytical skills needed for careers in Clinical Research: planning analyzing and reporting using biostatistics and ethics methods and standards. Clinical Research “These ‘gold’, ‘green’, and other OA experiments will continue in pursuit of the goal shared by all stakeholders - researchers, funders, research institutions and publishers - which is to extend access as far as possible to articles derived from primary research. In parallel there is also the huge challenge of data curation. Publishers support policies on data sharing and work to improve linking original research data to journal content. Publishers believe that the most robust and sustainable solutions to these complex issues will be derived from all stakeholders working together for the common good of universal access, within a sustainable and scalable economic framework.” Dr Maria KOUMTZI, MedicReS IC2011, Istanbul MedicReS Course in Vienna 2012 Course Key Subjects: Study Design, Randomization & Blinding, Handling with Bias, ITT, Sample Size Estimation CONSORT

  • 1. MedicReS COURSE Introduction to Clinical Research MedicReS aims to educate researchers and provoke discussion about good scientific method, statistics, ethics, publication, and education. Faced with stifling bureaucracy, competition for funds and employer pressure to deliver results, finding the time and space to produce the best research can seem an arduous process. The Lancet. PURPOSE MedicReS Education Center in Vienna To improve the quantitative and analytical skills needed for careers in Clinical Research: planning analyzing and reporting using biostatistics and ethics methods and standards. Clinical Research These gold, green, and other OA experiments will continue in pursuit of the goal shared by all stakeholders - researchers, funders, research institutions and publishers - which is to extend access as far as possible to articles derived from primary research. In parallel there is also the huge challenge of data curation. Publishers support policies on data sharing and work to improve linking original research data to journal content. Publishers believe that the most robust and sustainable solutions to these complex issues will be derived from all stakeholders working together for the common good of universal access, within a sustainable and scalable economic framework. 2. Reporting Clinical Trials Clear presentation of research data is a prerequisite for accurate understanding of research and its importance. Reporting guidelines are thus quality assurance tool for all stakeholders in health research: using the checklists and flow diagrams we make sure that all important elements of the research are presented and thus its value and importance understood. For authors, reporting guidelines are a powerful tool for writing clear reports of their work and a reminder what data need to be in the submitted manuscript. CONSORT is the oldest guideline, developed for reporting the results of randomized controlled trials (RCTs). Adequate reporting of RCTs is crucial for systematic reviews and meta analyses, which provide direct guidance for clinical practice.
