The Alexander von Humboldt Foundation and the Max Planck Society jointly confer Max Planck research awards to foreign and German scientists. The award provides a flexible financial framework for taking up, strengthening or extending research co-operation projects between non-German and German scientists. BackCare invites applications for the following awards: Bursary/studentships. These are for patient oriented scientific research into the
causes, treatment and prevention of back pain. Bursaries are for living expenses up to £5,000 per annum for up to three years.
Major grants for patient-oriented research into causes, treatment and prevention of back pain. The aim is to reduce the incidence of, and disability from, back pain and improve its treatment by gaining a better understanding of its manifestation and causes. BBSRC is calling for proposals for its tools and resources programme. The fund is intended to support small or short-duration, pump-priming research projects or to bring together communities for collaborative purposes. Proposals submitted to the T&R development fund should be technology or methods driven and focused on a biological challenge within the BBSRC remit. It is anticipated that grants of up to £80,000 to £100,000 will be made under this initiative. Projects should last six to 18 months, but community networking activities can extend to three years. The BBSRC invites applications for partnering awards under its international scientific interchange scheme. Partnering awards provide funding over 24 months for a series of exchange visits to take place between a UK and overseas research group. These do not cover research costs, but exchanges, workshops etc. Financial support is provided to contribute to fares and subsistence with a maximum grant of £5,000. Applications are invited from current BBSRC grant holders and scientists at BBSRC-supported institutes, who are in receipt of BBSRC funding. The British Academy invites applications for the following awards in the fields of the humanities and social sciences:
Joint project awards with the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science. These support collaborative research projects between UK and Japanese scholars. Up to £5,000 will be available per project per year, with an equivalent sum available from the JSPS.

British Heart Foundation invites proposals for the following awards: (No Deadline) Infrastructure grants. Awards of up to £500,000 each are available towards the
costs of providing infrastructure to support cardiovascular science in academic institutions. The grants are open to all senior cardiovascular scientists.
Project grants supporting research into the causes, prevention, diagnosis and treatment of heart disease. Applications are welcome from postdoctoral researchers working within the UK. Grants are awarded for projects lasting up to three years.
Non-clinical PhD studentships in cardiology. Awards are for three years and may include a stipend, tuition fees and a maximum of £10,000 per annum for research consumables.
Advanced training awards aimed at supporting young researchers within one year of submitting their PhD. Grants will last up to three years and include a salary and research consumables of up to £10,000 per annum.
Intermediate basic science research fellowships supporting scientists to undertake projects related to the cardiovascular system. Awards will normally last four years. Grants may include salaries, research consumables and equipment.
Re-entry fellowships. The scheme provides an opportunity to re-establish a career in cardiovascular science in a research institution in the UK. Fellowships normally last three years.
Senior basic science research fellowship. The awards provide a career opportunity in a research institution in the UK for individuals who are expected to reach readership or chair level within five years.
MBPhD studentships. These allow medical students to complete a PhD in cardiovascular science before completion of their medical degree. Awards last up to three years. They cover a stipend, tuition fees and costs for research consumables of less than £10,000 per annum.
Clinical research training fellowship. Awards may last up to three years to allow for the completion of either an MD or PhD. Grants provide a salary and research consumables for up to £10,000 per annum.
Intermediate clinical research fellowships. Fellowships will last up to five years. Grants cover salaries, research consumables and equipment.
Clinical research leave fellowships. These provide an opportunity for NHS staff to undertake dedicated Pas in research in a recognised UK centre in cardiovascular medicine. Awards may be for up to one year full-time or up to three years part-time research.

Travelling fellowship. This enables researchers to undertake a visit to a laboratory aboard. Awards normally last up to one year. Grants include travel expenses and a subsistence allowance for short visits.

The British Heart Foundation invites applications for the following awards: Programme grants, which support research into the causes, prevention, diagnosis
and treatment of cardiovascular disease. The principal investigator should be a senior researcher working in a UK institution. Awards are made for five years initially and may cover staff salaries, research consumables and equipment.
New horizons programme grants. These encourage scientists from outside traditional cardiovascular biology to engage in cardiovascular research. BHF will award grants of up to five years’ duration to groups of scientists who can bring novel expertise to cardiovascular research.

Royal Society Awards Grants for short visits from the UK. These fund visits by UK-based scientists to all
countries except the US. The scheme aims to initiate one-to-one collaborations, build lasting networks and provide access to complementary equipment, data observations and ideas. Funding will be provided for visits lasting up to 12 weeks and will cover travel as well as subsistence costs.
