PURE VEGETABLE EXTRACTS.It is a matter of eminent importance to the interested and benevolent
physician, to be able to calculate with certainty, on the effect of any drug
or medicine he may administer. This he cannot do, unless he be able to
judge of its purity, condition, and carefulness of preparation. Perhaps
no class of medicines present so many difficulties, and certainly none
which have given such universal dissatisfaction on this point as Vegetable
Extracts ; and some of our best physicians have nearly abandoned their
use on this account.
This is not surprising, when we consider the rude and imperfect means
generally employed for evaporating, and the want of suitable knowledge
and carefulness in the whole process of manufacture. Indeed, it requires
much experience and consummate skill, in addition to the most perfect
apparatus, to produce extracts that will be uniform and certain in their
effect—as much depends on the freshness of the vegetable operated upon,
maturity, season of collection, and influence of climate.
To remedy the difficulties complained of, and furnish the profession with
the article they so earnestly requested of us
—
pure and reliable extracts
—we have directed our attention to this end, and spared no expense to
procure the best information and conveniences for the purpose. Our for-
mer experience and observations, of thirty years, have been of value;
and the possession of large botanic gardens gives us important advantages
in the collection and freshness of the vegetables.
Having built a new Laboratory, and furnished it with very complete
fixtures for the various manipulations, among which is a vacuum pan for
evaporation, embracing the late improvements of Benson and Day, and
others peculiarly our own, built expressly for the purpose, we have suc-
ceeded in producing extracts which meet the approval of the faculty, from
whom we are receiving very flattering encomiums of praise.
Professor Proctor says—" Extracts ought to be composed of a number
of chemical constituents, or proximate vegetable principles, educed, and
not produced, during the process of evaporation." This has been our
aim ; and although we are aware "the quality of the product depends
less upon the means adopted for extracting the soluble matter from the
vegetable substances operated upon, than upon those by which the inspis-
eationis effected," yet we have found it important so far to acquaint our-

elves with the chemical constituents and nature of the principles con-
sained in the drugs, their solubility, their relations to heat and air, their
tvolatility, &c, as to be able on all occasions to adopt the menstruum
best calculated to remove the greatest amount of active matter, and so
control the evaporation, that it may not be injured by heat or lost by
volatilization.
It has been a matter of controversy among apothecaries and pharma-
ceutists whether it was wise, in the inspissated juices, to retain the ehlo-
rophyl and albumen, so as to preserve the green color, as an index of its
careful preparation ; but the well conducted experiments of M. Solon
have proved them to be nearly inert. Hence, their presence only tends to
enfeeble the proper extract ; and by the recommendation of Professor W.Proctor, of Philadelphia, we shall hereafter, in most cases, reject them,
unless otherwise desired by parties so ordering in time of preparing.
The following list embraces the principal kinds; but we hope to be able
soon to furnish various others. They will be neatly put up in jars, con-
taining 1 lb., \ lb. and \ lb., or in bulk. We request immediate notice
if any extract prepared by us does not fully meet the recommendations.

SUPPLEMENTARY.
It has been wisely said, that the <* truly useful is always the truly
beautiful," and this truth has been fully carried out in the products of the
vegetable kingdom. Perhaps no study contributes more to the length,
utility, and pleasure of existence—which adds to health, cheerfulness and
enlarged views of creative wisdom and power, and which improves the
morals, tastes and judgment, more than the science of Botany. Yet it is
worthy of remark, that a majority of persons, even in cultivated society,
have been singularly ignorant, not only of Botany as a science, but of the
character and nutritive properties of the most distinguished products of
vegetable nature. At present, however, we are pleased to notice a general
awakening to a more lively interest in this line, and a wider diffusion of
botanical knowledge, which must add to the happiness, and we earnestly
hope to the innocency, of the human family.
It has been romarked of the noble though degraded Burns, that he
could see more beauty in the thistle that grew at his door, than another
might view in the most gorgeous spectacle on earth, and so it might be
said of most botanists.
It might seem strange that so inviting a subject has been so long neg-
lected ; but, among the more intellectual and spirited beings of creation,
plants have found observers since the time the Greeks considered them
possessed of souls and endowed with the powers of thought. Pythagoras
was the first who drew up a regular catalogue which was variously modeled
and copied by his successors.
Solomon, Plato, Socrates, Seneca, Cyrus, Alexander, and even the
stoical Diogenes, manifested a great interest in the beauties of the vege-
table kingdom; and Haroun Al Raschid, the theme alike of history and
song, and his cotemporary and friend, the Emperor Charlemagne, were
exceedingly partial to this branch of natural history.
Mankind have successfully sought from time immemorial, and from the
savage to the civilian, remedial agents for sickness and disease from the
vegetable kingdom, and their collection, preparation and administration*
have furnished employment for many honest and benevolent individuals;
the good Samaritans of the day, and a still greater number of rogues and
empirics.
" More than two thousand years ago the physicians of Greece were sup-
plied with herbs of which their Materia Medica chiefly consisted, by a
class of persons called rhizotomi or root-cutters, who occupied themselves
with the collection and sale of roots and herbs. They are mentioned by
Theophrastus in connection with the pharmacopolists. Most of them were
illiterate and superstitious, and ascribed magical virtues to the roots and
herbs which they collected.
"Among the Romans, these cullers of simples, were termed herbarists;
and, if we are to believe Pliny, they were a sad set of knaves.
" At the present day, in Europe, the rhizotomi of the Greeks and the
herbarii of the Romans are represented by a class of persons called sim-
plers, who go about the country collecting those medicinal herbs which
grow wild, and the demand for which is insufficient to induce the dealers
to cultivate them. The plants are collected and sold chiefly to herbalists,
by whom the profession and public are supplied.
" But those medicinal plants for which there is a sufficient demand, and
which can be grown in the country, are cultivated in physic gardens or
physic grounds, by persons called physic gardeners, or herb growers.
'* Although the cultivation of medicinal plants is carried on in various
parts of England, yet more land is employed in this way in Surrey than in
any other county; and by far the greatest part of their physic grounds lie
in the parish of Mitcham and its neighborhood, about nine miles from
London. The soil of this place is a rich black mold.
"The cultivation of physical plants at Mitcham commenced about a
century ago. Lyson, who wrote in 1796, says that forty years before his
time there were only a few acres employed in the cultivation of medicinal
herbs in this parish; whereas, at the time he wrote, about two hundred
and fifty acres were occupied by physic gardeners. At the present time,
more than eight hundred acres are devoted, to the cultivation of medicinal
herbs, at Mitcham, Merton and Carshalton."
Although the cultivation of medicinal plants is not conducted on so largo
a scale in this country as in Europe, yet there are some fine gardens, and
their cultivation is rapidly extending. The Shakers were the first whocommenced the business in this country, and their physic grounds (which
embrace the largest portion in the States), cover about one hundred and

fifty acres of cultivated plants, of which the largest is at New Lebanon,
N. Y. This is the oldest in the counti-y, and was commenced on a small
eoale about seventy years since ; and within a few years has been largely
increased, as the demand for such medicines as they raise and collect has
doubled within a short time. This is partly owing to the frequent impor-
tation of spurious and adulterated drugs, which has led intelligent phy-
sicians to seek among our own genuine medicinal substances new remedies
and suitable equivalents.
In the commencement of the New Lebanon establishment, most of the
native remedies offered in market were collected by persons destitute of
necessary botanical information, and ignorant of the proper season of col-
lecting, and of the correct manner of preparation; but who gathered such
simples as were in general use, and which were generally bought up by
empirics and for domestic practice. But these, from exposure to atmos-
pheric influences, and being tied up in loose bundles, were generally
worthless. •
Most of the regular medicinal plants, then recognized in the dispensa-
tories, and kept for sale by respectable druggists, were imported from
Europe in a situation not convenient for retailing. To obviate these in-
conveniences, and believing a new and profitable branch of industry might
be opened, the society, about sixty years since, commenced improvements
in this line, and which, from its convenience and manifold advantages,
met the approbation of the public.
A few years since, the increasing demand rendered the trade a profitable
source of industry, and induced several persons of enterprise and capital
to engage in the business. But most who engaged in it being destitute
of the knowledge of the details of the business, employed seceders from
this society, who had become acquainted with their manner of prepara-
tion, and who very properly adopted their improvements, and with them
the very euphonious title of "Shaker Herbs," for their advertisements.
Perhaps this was intended as a compliment to the society; or it may be
to better meet the demands of the public. Some establishments, how-
ever, more scrupulously conscientious than others, have made purchases
of a few medicines from the society, and made up the deficiency of
"Shaker Herbs" by such collections as choice or necessity might dictate.
The society do not consider themselves amenable for the quality of such
articles as have never passed their inspection, nor perhaps been within

150 milos of their establishment, although sold under their name; there-
fore it would be well for the public who confide in their experience and
honesty, to ascertain, before purchasing, whether they are buying the
genuine Shaker preparation, or an imitation, which, perhaps, may
sometimes prove equally meritorious and worthy of patronage. We love
to see a healthy competition in business, believing it necessary to the well-
being of society, but object to a piracy of reputation.
The society at present are making improvements in gardens and appa-
ratus to meet the progressive demands of the age, and are disposed to
make suitable exertions and necessary expenditures to sustain the char-
acter and estimation they have long enjoyed.

BERKSHIRE MEDICAL INST.
Having examined numerous specimens of the extracts
prepared by the " United Society," and having used some
of them in my practice, I take great pleasure in certifying
to their excellence.
Most of the plants from which these extracts are pre-
pared ai*e raised in the gardens of the society. They are
gathered at the proper season, and care is taken in selecting
the proper menstruum for each individual plant. The so-
ciety adopt the new and improved method of evaporating
in vacuo. Extracts are thus secured which will supply a
desideratum in the materia medica long felt.
I most cheerfully recommend them to the profession.

I have for some time past been using vegetable extracts
prepared by the United Society, New Lebanon, and find a
manifest improvement in their mode of preparing in vacuo
—
being free from atmospheric influences, and rapidly evapo-
rated to a proper insistence without impairing their medi-
cinal properties by heat ; that used never exceeding 120°.
I find them of uniform strength, and would confidently
recommend them to the medical profession.
