How Stimulants Work

• “Our results suggest that enhancing dopamine D4 transmission in the basal ganglia and the thalamus is likely part of the mechanism of the therapeutic effects of psychostimulants on ADHD.” (Quoting David Erlig, M.D., Ph.D., SUNY)

• Erlij believes the therapeutic action of psychostimulants in ADHD occurs because the condition is caused by abnormalities of dopamine signaling in the brain. That is, when an individual has ADHD, the dopamine D4 receptor gene is abnormal.
