    patient safety

    Overview

As a leading hospital in Indiana,Bloomington Hospital enhances healthby advancing the art and science omedicine through the use o newtechnologies, procedures and care.

Prior to having any automationtechnology, Bloomington developeda comprehensive medication saetystrategy to dramatically improve thesaety o the medication process romthe distribution center to thebedside. The strategy was comprised

o our key elementspatient saety, nursing worklow, pharmacy productivityand physician medication use. And whenthe ocus was on a combination opharmacy productivity, nursing worklowand patient saety, thats whereAcuDose-Rx medication dispensingcabinets it seamlessly into the strategy.

Our overarching goal or this projectwas to use technology to ensure that ourprocesses were putting us at the leadingedge o patient saety in the medication

use process, explained Michael Melby, director o pharmacy at BloomingtonHospital. And when we chose toimplement McKesson Automationsolutions, we had the highest level opatient care and saety in mind. All othe solutions we currently use, especiallyour AcuDose-Rx medication dispensingcabinets, provide us that.

Hospital dispenses over 1 million dosesmedication per year. According to Melbmedication selection errors decreasedrom 3700 per year prior to AcuDose-Rto 600 per year ater AcuDose-Rx.

The system automatically tracksmedication use, patient charges, inventory levels, overrides and controllesubstance discrepancies. Bloomingtonhas realized a signiicant reduction inmissing medications and stock outs.Missing doses went rom 150 per day

prior to AcuDose-Rx to less than 25 atAcuDose-Rx. Inventory stock outs perweek were reduced by 50 percent.

Additionally, the capacity o the cabinis a big beneit or Bloomington. WithAcuDose-Rx cabinets, the pharmacy isable to provide 96 percent o the irstdose and maintenance medicationsneeded by nursing with an average 7minute turnaround time rom orderreceipt to medication availability. This compares to an average o 90

minutes prior to automation. Previousnursing saw the pharmacy as a barrierto getting the patients neededmedication. Now the pharmacy is seenas a acilitator.
