AMessage from the Board of Directors and CEO . . .

THE 2012 YEAR HAS BEEN VERY BUSY FOR US AS WECONTINUE TO PROVIDE MENTAL HEALTH SERVICES FOROUR COMMUNITY. We experienced a seven percent growth in ourinpatient admissions and a 17 percent growth in outpatient services. While we are pleased with the growth, we are alarmed at the number ofhospital admissions that we turn away each week because all of ourbeds are full. Last year 657 patients were denied admission because ofno available beds. 57% of those were children and adolescents.

We continue to examine the possibility of expanding our hospital by fourteen beds to better servechildren and adolescents. We applied for and received a 1.1 million dollar grant from the State ofMaryland to assist us with this expansion. This grant needs to be matched dollar for dollar to beobtained. A feasibility study done during the summer suggests that we can raise 2.5 million for thenew building. News on a capital campaign will be forthcoming.

To meet more needs of our community we have expanded the adult partial hospitalization program toinclude clients ages 18 and older. The Frederick outpatient office has been moved into a larger spaceto accommodate more staff and to serve more clients. We have also welcomed Dr. Gunvant Thaker,an adult psychiatrist in our North Village office, Dr. Jennifer Mettlen, a child and adolescentpsychiatrist to our hospital staff and Lauree Wolford, CRNP in our outpatient program in Frederick.

Thank you to our Generous donors!

We have carefully reviewed the names listed. If youfind an error, please contact the Development office.

There is a growing awareness of the need to combine physical and mental health care; we believe thatthe mind and body cannot be separated. More and more people are recognizing that mental illness isa legitimate brain disorder that can be managed successfully and that people can recover. We offerboth community and professional seminars to broaden the knowledge and understanding of mentalillnesses.

We are grateful for the partnerships that we have with otherhealthcare providers, the public school systems and churchconstituents. As we grow to meet the needs of our community we aredependent on the generosity of local businesses, foundations, donorsand the time and talent shared by many volunteers, including theBrook Lane Board of Directors and the Brook Lane FoundationBoard.

This 2012 Report to the Community will give you a snapshot of thework that we do and the vital services that we provide. For moreinformation visit our website www.brooklane.org or invite one of ourstaff to speak at a meeting or workshop.

We greatly appreciate your interest in our work; together we canmake a difference in the lives of those we serve.Rev. Ray Geigley, Board Chair
